Prachinburi–Sa Kaeo
Nature, Khmer Ruins & the Border

Prachinburi and Sa Kaeo sit on the same line — you can run Highway 33 straight from one into the other. The fun of pairing them is that you get all three flavors: the eastern forest at Pang Sida, the oldest Khmer stone sanctuary in the east, and Rong Kluea, the biggest Thai–Cambodian border market around. So this trip is laid out as daily blocks: do Prachinburi town first, then drift into Sa Kaeo — with real routes, real fees, and real food stops so you can plan it straight away.

A lot of people do Prachinburi and stop at Abhaibhubejhr and the Prachinburi side of Khao Yai. But if you turn east a little further along Highway 33 (Suwannason), you hit Sa Kaeo — a border province with a completely different set of sights: the Pang Sida side of the Dong Phaya Yen–Khao Yai World Heritage forest, a thousand-year-old stone sanctuary, and a border market that buzzes all day long. The two provinces connect easily, and a 2–3 day trip fits just right without rushing.

Before you set off

Sa Kaeo is a border province. At certain times the checkpoints and areas right along the border may have notices or entry restrictions depending on the situation. Before planning a run to Rong Kluea market or any spot near the border, check the latest news and any provincial/checkpoint announcements again, and keep a backup plan in your pocket.

Route overview

From Bangkok, take Highway 33 toward Nakhon Nayok–Prachinburi. Spend a day in Prachinburi town, then the next morning keep running Highway 33 east, through Prachantakham–Kabin Buri, into Sa Kaeo. From Prachinburi town to Sa Kaeo town is about 100–120 km, roughly 1.5–2 hours of driving, and from there you fan out to Pang Sida (Mueang Sa Kaeo), Aranyaprathet (Rong Kluea market), and Khok Sung–Ta Phraya (the sanctuary / Lalu). A 3-day, 2-night trip is the most relaxed; if you only have 2 days, you can tighten it up.

  • Bangkok → Prachinburi town — about 130 km, 2–2.5 hours of driving on Highway 33
  • Prachinburi town → Sa Kaeo town — about 100–120 km, 1.5–2 hours along Highway 33 via Kabin Buri
  • Sa Kaeo town → Aranyaprathet (Rong Kluea market) — about 50 km, another 45 min–1 hour
  • Aranyaprathet → Sdok Kok Thom sanctuary (Khok Sung) — about 35 km to the northeast

If you leave Bangkok late, you can trim it down to just Abhaibhubejhr and Wat Kaeo Phichit, then head to your stay.

Day 2 — into Sa Kaeo & Pang Sida

Day 2

Prachinburi → Sa Kaeo town → Pang Sida National Park

08:00
Leave Prachinburi, run Highway 33 into Sa KaeoFollow Highway 33 through Prachantakham–Kabin Buri into Sa Kaeo. There are gas stations and cafes along the way to stop and rest. Around 1.5–2 hours to reach Sa Kaeo town.
10:00
Pang Sida National ParkIn Tha Yaek subdistrict, Mueang Sa Kaeo district. Open daily 08:00–16:30, entry around 30 THB/person. 10:45
Pang Sida WaterfallA three-tier cliff waterfall about ten meters high, with a wide pool below where you can swim. There's a picnic area, parking, and restrooms, and it's a short walk in from the lot — good for a swim from mid-morning to noon.

18:00

What to know about Pang Sida

In the rainy season the butterflies are beautiful, but the paths get slippery and the waterfall runs strong — watch for wet ground and check with the rangers before getting in the water. Some longer hiking trails require a ranger guide and advance booking. Before you go, check the Pang Sida National Park page for opening hours and seasonal activities.

Day 3 — Khmer ruin + border market

Day 3

Aranyaprathet · Sdok Kok Thom–Rong Kluea market

08:30

The Fine Arts Department has designated it a historical park, with a main sanctuary, a library, and a gallery corridor. It's about 35 km northeast of Aranyaprathet.
11:30
Lunch at a well-known Aranyaprathet spotPopular picks include Pa Riam's stewed pork leg over rice in front of Wat Luang Aran (open roughly 10:00–22:00), with rich pork leg and five-spice braised duck, or a noodle / stewed-meat shop in Aranyaprathet market.
13:30
Rong Kluea Market (Border Friendship Market)The largest Thai–Cambodian border market in eastern Thailand, at Ban Khlong Luek next to the Aranyaprathet–Poipet checkpoint. 16:00
Grab souvenirs, then head backOnce you've shopped Rong Kluea, run Highway 33 back. Or, if you still have energy and time, swing by the border-checkpoint area to soak up the atmosphere before heading back to Bangkok.

Want more nature? Add Lalu–Ta Phraya

If you have more than 3 days, or want to lean into the nature-and-oddity side, head up to Ta Phraya district to see Lalu. Lalu is a Khmer word meaning to break through — it's a phenomenon where rainwater has eroded the soil into strange pillars and earthen cliffs, earning it the nickname Thailand's Grand Canyon. Here you park at the visitor center and ride a community e-taek (farm tractor cart) in to see it, with a local guide leading the walk. Early morning or late afternoon has the nicest light and isn't too hot.

Nature

Lalu (Ta Phraya)

Oddly shaped earthen cliffs; ride a community e-taek cart in with a local guide. Good for people who love unusual landscapes and photography.

History

Prasat Khao Noi Si Chomphu (Aranyaprathet)

An old Khmer sanctuary on a low hill near Aranyaprathet, a short stair climb up with wide views — a nice history pairing with Sdok Kok Thom.

Can you do it in 2 days?

Yes. If you've only got Saturday–Sunday, trim Prachinburi to just Abhaibhubejhr on the first morning, then run into Sa Kaeo and do Pang Sida in the afternoon. Spend one night in Sa Kaeo town, then on day two do Sdok Kok Thom and Rong Kluea market and head back — you'll get nature, the sanctuary, and the border market in one trip without wearing yourself out. If you want Pang Sida at full length, bump it up to 3 days.

Recommended

3 days, 2 nights (most relaxed)

A full day in Prachinburi town, Pang Sida on day two, the sanctuary and Rong Kluea market on day three. Good for families or people who like to take their time.

Alternative

2 days, 1 night (a bit rushed)

Keep Prachinburi short and focus on Pang Sida, the Khmer ruin, and the border market. Good for a weekend trip.

What to pack & watch out for

  • Distances — Sa Kaeo's sights are spread fairly far apart (town–Aranyaprathet–Khok Sung–Ta Phraya), so you'll want your own car and a route ordered by direction.
  • Opening hours — Pang Sida is open 08:00–16:30, so go early to leave time for the waterfall. Rong Kluea is open all day, but afternoons get crowded.
  • The border — Sa Kaeo runs along the border, and at times the checkpoints and adjacent areas may have restrictions depending on the situation. Check the news and provincial announcements before you go.
  • Season — In the rainy season (May–Oct) Pang Sida is lush and full of butterflies, but the paths are slippery — bring grippy shoes and a rain jacket.
  • Bargaining — Rong Kluea is a bargaining market, so compare a few shops before buying, and keep an eye on your belongings in the crowds.
