Ao Prao Resort — the quiet Ao Prao Beach at a more approachable price

Ao Prao Beach sits on the western shore of Koh Samet, a world away from the lively Sai Kaew Beach — a short, quiet stretch of sand with water so clear you can snorkel straight off the beach · Three Samed Resorts properties share this bay, and Ao Prao Resort is the entry-level one: more affordable than the luxury Le Vimarn next door, yet sharing the same private beach and clear water · 63 rooms set into the hillside with sea views, from approx. ฿3,500/night

Our Full Review

Most visitors to Koh Samet land at Sai Kaew Beach, which is busy day and night · But cross to the western shore at Ao Prao and the mood changes completely — a small, quiet bay with only a handful of resorts · Ao Prao Resort opened back in 1995 and was the first Samed Resorts property on this bay · Its rooms are set into the hillside rather than lined up along the sand, so many of them look down over the sea from above · Past guests agree the first thing that strikes you is the quiet and the near-private beach.

There are 63 rooms, starting with Classic Hillside and Deluxe Hillside tucked into the tropical garden, rising to Premier Sea View, Premier Bayview Hillside and the Beachfront Cottages closest to the sand · Every room has a private balcony, air-conditioning, satellite TV and a hot-water bathroom · The resort was renovated in 2024, and the updated rooms earn praise for being spacious and cool · To be honest, though, some reviews still note that a few bathrooms look dated and could use further updating — if you book, ask for a renovated room.

"Open the balcony door and there's the sea and the soft sound of waves; walk a few steps onto the sand and you're snorkelling among bright fish — so much quieter than Sai Kaew, it feels like a different island."

Ao Prao Beach in front of the resort, fine white sand and clear water with loungers on the sand

What sets Ao Prao apart from the other beaches on the island is the clear water right off the sand, with coral close enough to snorkel from the beach · The resort runs a free daily snorkelling activity for guests, which comes up often in reviews · There's a swimming pool, a spa and sun loungers on the sand for a whole day of doing nothing much · Overall the vibe suits people coming for a quiet rest rather than nightlife.

On food, the resort has a beachfront restaurant and bar serving Thai and international dishes · Breakfast scores well across several reviews, though some would like a wider menu · Staff are mostly friendly and helpful, even if a few reviews note that professionalism isn't always consistent · On the whole it's a small resort with a relaxed, informal feel.

Getting there takes a little planning · From Bangkok it's roughly a 3-hour drive to Ban Phe pier, then the resort's own speedboat across to Ao Prao for about 15–20 minutes — you don't land at Sai Kaew like everyone else · The resort runs scheduled boat transfers, so check the times before you reach the pier · It scores 9.0 from 190 reviews on Trip.com and ranks #3 of 24 hotels in Koh Samet on TripAdvisor — numbers that show most guests come away happy.

Ao Prao Resort

Honestly, Ao Prao Resort isn't for people who want nightlife or a strip of beach restaurants to wander · Ao Prao is quiet, with almost nothing outside the resort, and reaching Sai Kaew means a boat or a ride across the island · But if you want a private beach, clear water and snorkelling off your doorstep on a lighter budget than the luxury resorts on the same bay — Ao Prao Resort is the most sensible way in.

A tip from following the reviews here: choose a Sea View or Bayview Hillside room and confirm it's one of the 2024-renovated rooms — the elevated sea views and the updated condition are what make the rate worth it · Over long weekends and high season (November–April), book early and lock in your speedboat slot, as the good rooms and boat times fill up fast.

Honest Take
🎯
This place is a great fit if...
Ao Prao Resort is the most sensible way onto Ao Prao Bay for anyone who wants a private beach, clear water and quiet on a lighter budget than the luxury resorts on the same bay — snorkel coral off the sand, sea views from hillside rooms · You just have to accept the speedboat transfer to Ao Prao and that some rooms still await renovation.
💡 Check before you book
These 3 points matter to some travellers — make sure they fit your trip (we have added the workaround).
  • 💡If you want nightlife, the Sai Kaew strip and lots of restaurants — Ao Prao is quiet and requires crossing the island → a Sai Kaew-side hotel will be more convenient
  • 💡If you want every room detail to feel brand-new — renovated in 2024, but some rooms still have dated amenities → specify a renovated room at booking, or consider Le Vimarn on the same bay
  • 💡If you're travelling over a long weekend or in high season (Nov–Apr) — sea-view rooms and speedboat slots fill fast → book ahead and confirm your boat time with the resort
