Banyan Tree Samui — every villa a pool villa, cascading above a private Lamai bay

If you've ever thought an ocean view from your own pool was something to gamble on — at Banyan Tree Samui there's no gamble, because all 88 villas have their own private infinity pool, stepped down a private hillside that slopes toward Lamai Bay. Opened in 2009 in the Banyan Tree group, the resort has a private beach where you can swim, kayak and snorkel for free. The real draw is the privacy and the Banyan Tree Spa with its Rainforest hydrotherapy. From approx. THB 18,000/night. Scored 9.5 from 147 reviews.

Our Full Review

Banyan Tree Samui was built on a private hillside that slopes down to Lamai Bay on the south-east coast of Koh Samui, opening in 2009. What sets it apart from a typical luxury resort is that all 88 villas are stepped down the slope, almost all facing the sea — open your door and the Gulf stretches out in front of you, with no building blocking the view.

The heart of it is that every villa has its own private infinity pool — there isn't a single room without one. Even the entry-level Deluxe Pool Villa is around 130 sqm, with a pool reaching out toward the sea view, a relaxation sala, and a bathtub by a floor-to-ceiling window. Guests say again and again that what stays with them is the privacy — you can be in your own pool all day and barely see another soul.

"Sitting in your own pool watching the sun rise over Lamai Bay, with no sound but the waves and the birds — that's exactly why people pay for a hillside pool villa."

There's a small private beach in the bay where you can swim, with free water gear to borrow — kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling sets. The Banyan Tree Spa here is much talked about, especially the Rainforest Experience hydrotherapy circuit you walk through to loosen the muscles before a treatment. Many reviewers say the therapists' skill is the kind you remember long after.

Dining has a few standout venues. Saffron serves Thai food by the sea and is genuinely praised as delicious — it's the signature restaurant of the Banyan Tree group. The Edge is the elevated-view dining room used for the breakfast buffet, which many guests call generous and fresh, and the beachside restaurant suits a lighter meal to the sound of the waves. One note from some reviews: the Thai food options in a couple of spots still have room to grow.

The resort sits in Maret on the Lamai side, about a 3-minute drive from Lamai Beach and roughly 9 minutes from Chaweng. Samui Airport is about 12 km away (around 25 minutes). The resort is fairly secluded and private, better suited to travellers who plan to stay in the resort than to head out every day. It scores 9.5 from 147 Trip.com reviews — a high, steady number for a luxury resort at this level.

Honestly, the thing to accept is that the resort is built on a steep hillside, with villas stepped high and low, so you'll rely on buggies to get around. The good news is that most reviews praise how quickly the buggies arrive — usually within 4–5 minutes. A few complaints: some room decor feels a little dated for the price, the private beach has exposed rocks at low tide, and the main pool isn't as exciting as the villa pools. But if what you want is a genuinely private ocean-view pool villa with intuitive service, this place delivers something hard to match on the island.

A tip from following the reviews here for a while: if the budget allows, choose an Ocean View villa or above for a full bay view, as some of the lower villas have their view partly screened by trees. In high season (December–March) rates climb noticeably and the best-view villas sell out fast, so book ahead and lock in a free-cancellation rate first, then compare prices across platforms.

Honest Take
🎯
This place is a great fit if...
Banyan Tree Samui is best for travellers chasing a genuinely private ocean-view pool villa with intuitive service — every villa has its own infinity pool, the private beach is calm and quiet, and the Banyan Tree Spa truly relaxes. But accept that the resort is on a steep hillside that relies on buggies, and that it's set apart from the island's livelier areas.
💡 Check before you book
These 3 points matter to some travellers — make sure they fit your trip (we have added the workaround).
  • 💡If you have trouble walking or dislike relying on buggies — the resort is on a steep hillside with villas stepped high and low, so you'll call a buggy between villas, pools and restaurants → ask for a villa near the lobby/beach to cut down on transfers.
  • 💡If you want to head out to eat and explore every day — this resort is fairly secluded, so you'll drive out to Lamai/Chaweng → if walkable buzz is the point, consider a stay in Chaweng or Bophut instead.
  • 💡If it's high season (Dec–Mar) and you haven't booked — rates rise fast and the best-view villas go early → book ahead with a free-cancellation rate, then compare prices across platforms.

Frequently asked questions — Banyan Tree Samui

Where is Banyan Tree Samui and what's nearby?
Banyan Tree Samui sits on a private hillside above Lamai Bay in Maret, on the south-east coast of Koh Samui. Lamai Beach is about a 3-minute drive and Chaweng about 9 minutes. The Hin Ta & Hin Yai rocks and Central Festival Samui are close by, and Samui Airport is about 12 km away (around 25 minutes).
How much does Banyan Tree Samui cost and what villas are there?
Rates start from approx. THB 18,000/night for a Deluxe Pool Villa (130 sqm with a private infinity pool). From there you can step up to an Ocean View Pool Villa with full sea views, a 155 sqm Wellbeing Sanctuary Pool Villa, and the top-tier Royal Banyan Pool Villa. Every villa has its own pool. High-season rates rise noticeably — always compare a few platforms before booking.
Who is Banyan Tree Samui best for?
It's ideal for couples, honeymooners, and anyone planning a quiet, spa-focused escape. Every room is a private ocean-view pool villa with a high level of privacy, and there's a private beach with free water sports. It suits travellers who want a calm retreat more than a lively roadside resort.
Is there a lot of walking at Banyan Tree Samui, and are there buggies?
The resort is built on a steep hillside, with villas stepped high and low, so you'll rely on buggies between villas, pools and restaurants. The good news is most reviews praise how quickly the buggies arrive — usually within 4–5 minutes. If walking is difficult, ask for a villa near the lobby or beach when you book.
What is the beach at Banyan Tree Samui like?

Worth knowing: at low tide there are some exposed rocks, so check the tide times if you want easy swimming. If a long sandy beach is the point, Lamai and Chaweng are only a few minutes' drive away.
How far ahead should I book, and is cancellation flexible?
In high season (December–March) book 1–2 months ahead, as the best-view villas sell out fast and rates climb. Other times, 3–4 weeks is usually fine. Every platform offers a Free Cancellation option — choose that first if your plans aren't firm, then compare prices across a few sites.
