Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin — Stay Inside the Legendary 1923 Railway Hotel on Central Hua Hin Beach

If one hotel could tell the whole story of Hua Hin, it would be this one — Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin sits on the grounds of The Railway Hotel, which welcomed its first guests in 1923 when the southern railway line had just reached town · A white colonial building with a red-tiled roof, an elephant topiary garden everyone photographs, and a long sandy beach right behind it · 207 rooms and 42 villas from approx ฿4,800/night · scored 9.3 from 243 Trip.com reviews.

Our Full Review

The story starts in 1922, when the southern railway line reached Hua Hin and the State Railway of Thailand built a seaside hotel for royalty and early international travellers. It held its grand opening on 1 January 1923 as The Railway Hotel · A century later the white colonial building still stands, now under the name Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas · Original pieces from that era are displayed in the Railway Museum out in the garden — which is exactly why many guests choose this place even though Hua Hin has plenty of newer resorts.

The garden is the heart of it · The wide lawn in front of the main building is full of trees clipped into animals, from small birds to an elephant topiary bigger than a real one called Lucky the Elephant, which has stood here since the Railway Hotel days · Guests like to walk underneath the elephant for good luck, and it's the spot people remember and photograph the most · Walk through the garden and you reach Hua Hin beach itself — long, fine sand, genuinely swimmable.

"Waking up and strolling through the garden, past the topiary elephant and the old white building, then out to the beach — it feels like staying inside Hua Hin's history."

Rooms come in two worlds · The old wing has high ceilings, polished wood floors and period furniture for a classic atmosphere you won't find in a new tower · The 42 villas are contemporary, many with a private plunge pool or jacuzzi · Most guests praise the spacious, clean rooms and comfortable beds — but honestly, some rooms in the older wing feel more vintage than luxe, so if you want a fresher look, ask for a renovated wing or book a villa.

Topiary garden and wide lawn in front of the resort's colonial building

The facilities suit families well · There are three outdoor pools including a kids' pool and kids' club, a spa, a gym and several restaurants on site · The one thing not to miss is afternoon tea in the Railway Museum — a buffet-style high tea with scones, sandwiches, macarons and cakes among original artefacts from the Railway Hotel era · Many guests come specifically for this tea time; a few note service can be slow on busy days, but the atmosphere is worth trying.

Location is the clearest advantage · The resort sits at the end of Damnernkasem Road, a 5-minute walk to Hua Hin Night Market and the walking street full of food and souvenirs · You can head out for seafront seafood, wander Hua Hin's famously pretty railway station, or come back to laze in the garden — all in one day without calling a car · Location scores 9.5–9.6 across platforms, which few Hua Hin resorts manage.

Poolside loungers and a relaxing corner at Centara Grand Hua Hin

To be straight, Centara Grand is a large resort with the trade-offs that come with size · The grounds are big, so walking from some rooms to the pool or beach takes a moment, and in high season and on long weekends it gets crowded — the breakfast buffet and pools can fill up · Prices swing too, from roughly ฿4,800–฿6,500/night in normal periods up to ฿9,000+ on long weekends or peak season · If you want a quiet, private boutique feel, this may be too big · But if you want a beachfront resort in the town centre, with a real story, plenty for the whole family, and the night market within walking distance — Hua Hin has very few that hit all of those.

A tip from following this place's reviews for a while: ask for a room or villa facing the sea or the garden for the fullest atmosphere · Book afternoon tea (usually from 2pm) and arrive a little early to skip the queue · For high season, November to February, and long weekends, book at least 1–2 months ahead and choose a free-cancellation rate first.

Honest Take
🎯
This place is a great fit if...
Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin is the resort that sells story and location better than anyone in Hua Hin — the 1923 Railway Hotel building, the elephant topiary garden, the beach behind it, and a 5-minute walk to the night market · Just know it's a big resort: some older-wing rooms still feel vintage, and long weekends get busy.
💡 Check before you book
These 3 points matter to some travellers — make sure they fit your trip (we have added the workaround).
  • 💡If you want a quiet, private boutique resort — this is large and busy at peak times, which may not be the mood you're after → try a smaller boutique resort around Khao Takiab or Khao Tao instead.
  • 💡If you prioritise sleek, modern rooms — some older-wing rooms still feel vintage → ask for a renovated wing or choose a villa when booking.
  • 💡If you arrive on a long weekend or in high season without a booking — the best rooms sell out fast and prices spike → book 1–2 months ahead and lock in a free-cancellation rate first.
