Phuglong Hotel — a central Phayao boutique a 5-minute walk from the lake
If you want to sleep in the heart of Phayao and step straight out onto the lakefront without driving, Phuglong Hotel is the name guests mention most. It's a modern boutique building on Chai Kwan Road, with clean rooms, big windows and — in some rooms — private balconies looking over Kwan Phayao lake. A few minutes' walk takes you to the Phayao Walking Street, the City Pillar Shrine and the lakeshore. Standard rooms start at around THB 850/night — good value for a location this central.
What sets Phuglong apart from other hotels in central Phayao is its spot right on Chai Kwan Road, the lakefront road. Walk a few hundred metres from the lobby and you reach Kwan Phayao lake, the Phayao Walking Street and the City Pillar Shrine — a neighbourhood that fills in the evening with people jogging, cycling and sitting out by the water. Many guests say the best part is that you can "walk to everything" and never need to call a ride the whole trip.
The building is a modern block of around 30 rooms that looks new and feels clean. Standard Superior/Deluxe rooms are roughly 30 sq m with big windows that let in plenty of light. Some rooms have a private balcony facing Kwan Phayao — the view reviewers love most. Beds are comfortable, the air-con is cold, and there's a TV and fridge in each room. Family suites and larger suites are available if you're travelling as a group.
"Opened the curtains in the morning to Kwan Phayao with mist drifting over the water — two minutes' walk down to the lakeshore, and never had to drive once."
The next most-praised thing is the staff. The reception and reservations team reply quickly and are good at recommending places to eat and things to see around the lake. There's an on-site restaurant, a small fitness room, bikes to borrow, free parking and free Wi-Fi. Breakfast is a simple set with a decent amount of choice — most guests say it's fine for the price.
To be honest about the weak points: some room details aren't fully thought through for usability. Guests note there are few power outlets, the light switches aren't near the bed, there's little bedside reading light, and bathroom storage is small. Wi-Fi can be slow at times, the bathroom tiles get a bit slippery when wet, and some breakfast dishes arrive not very hot. None of this ruins a stay, but it's worth knowing.
One older gripe was that booking options used to be limited — direct booking sometimes meant a bank transfer, with no official website. These days you can book normally through Agoda, Booking and Trip.com, which is far more convenient. Overall scores are solid: Trip.com rates it 9.5 from 38 reviews, the cross-platform picture sits around 8.7–8.9, and TripAdvisor ranks it #1 among B&Bs/guesthouses in Phayao city.
In short, Phuglong is an excellent fit if you want to use central Phayao as a base for walking the lakefront, eating your way along the walking street and visiting Wat Tilok Aram out on the water. You get a clean, modern room with a good view at a price you can justify. If you can live with the unfinished details (outlets, lighting, Wi-Fi), it offers value that's hard to find in this town.

- 💡If you work online and rely on fast Wi-Fi all day — the signal can be slow at times → keep a mobile data plan as backup, or ask for a room with a good signal at check-in.
- 💡If you want a lake view from your room — not every room sees the water → request a "lake-view / balcony room" when booking and reconfirm before arrival.
- 💡If you charge several devices by the bed — outlets are limited and the switches are awkwardly placed → bring a small power strip and it's far more comfortable.
