It is a boutique resort on the River Kwai Noi in Wang Krachae, Sai Yok district, with 76 air-conditioned bungalows scattered through a riverside forest garden. THB 2,800/night, rated 4/5 from 1,187 Tripadvisor reviews and ranked #1 in Sai Yok.

Our Full Review

River Kwai Resotel sits on the River Kwai Noi in Wang Krachae, Sai Yok district, well beyond Kanchanaburi town. The fun starts before you even reach the resort: you park at Phutakien Pier and take a short longtail-boat ride in, on the resort's scheduled transfer boats. When the boat rounds the bend to reveal the bungalows spread through the riverside forest garden, many guests say that's the moment the trip really begins. Unlike a floating raft such as Jungle Rafts, the Resotel is land-based riverside bungalows with air-conditioning and hot water — making it the pick for travellers who want the jungle setting and the boat arrival, but still want comfort.

Rooms range from Superior and Deluxe River View up to River View Grand Deluxe and a Plunge Pool Jacuzzi Villa. Most are bungalows or low-rise buildings spaced through the garden, with enough distance between them to feel private. Standard rooms run around 32–35 sqm with air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV, a minibar and a private balcony, many looking out over the river or garden. Plenty of reviews say the rooms are cleaner and roomier than expected, though some note there are both older and newer room zones — if you want a renovated room or a full river view, say so when you book.

"It's only a few minutes by boat to the hotel, but it feels like slipping into another world. I opened the balcony door in the morning to the river and a thin mist — worth the journey."

Riverside bar and lounge area at River Kwai Resotel looking out over the river and forest

The heart of it all is the River Kwai Noi and the forest garden wrapped around the resort. There are two outdoor pools to choose from, one of them heated with a Jacuzzi that cool-season guests especially love. By the river there are spots to jump in and float with the current (life vests provided), plus kayaks and bicycles to borrow for exploring. The restaurant and bar sit right by the water with an airy feel. On some evenings there is a Mon dance show by the nearby community, a touch many reviews mention fondly.

Tucked deep in Sai Yok, the resort is quiet at night with fresh air. From here you can carry on by boat or car to the area's highlights — nearby Lawa Cave, Sai Yok Noi Waterfall, Hellfire Pass, and Tham Krasae Station on the Death Railway. Many guests use the Resotel as a one- or two-night base for nature in the Sai Yok area specifically. The upside is the calm and the closeness to nature; the trade-off is that it is far from town and outside restaurants, so nearly every meal leans on the resort's own kitchen.

Open-air riverside restaurant at River Kwai Resotel right by the water

To be straight with you, the most common gripe in reviews is the food and in-restaurant service. Many say the menu is fairly limited and that ordering a la carte is slow — the buffet tends to go more smoothly. Staff are friendly, but some speak little English. A few rooms in the older zone show wear and could use maintenance. And because this is a riverside resort in a forest garden, insects and patchy internet in some spots come with the territory.

River Kwai Resotel

A tip from following the reviews here for a while: check the transfer-boat times and book a newer-zone room or a Deluxe River View in advance to get the best of both the river view and the room condition. If you go in the cool season (Nov–Feb) the weather is at its best and the heated pool helps a lot. On food, book a package that includes the buffet if you can — it's smoother than ordering dish by dish. Rates start around THB 2,800/night for a standard room, rising into five figures for the Plunge Pool Jacuzzi Villa; compare a few platforms and check which boat transfer and meals are included before booking.

Compared with its Sai Yok neighbours, River Kwai Resotel sits squarely between a raw, no-electricity raft like Jungle Rafts and a luxury air-conditioned raft like The Float House. It gives you the boat-into-the-jungle arrival and full river activities, but keeps air-con, hot water and pools to fall back on, at a reachable price. Guests who love it tend to enjoy the natural setting and aren't too fussy about the food or fine room details. Knowing you're getting a quiet riverside resort reached by boat — not a city hotel where you can easily pop out to eat — this place does its job well.

Honest Take
🎯
This place is a great fit if...
River Kwai Resotel is best for travellers who want the boat-into-the-jungle, riverside feeling on the River Kwai Noi but still want air-con, hot water and a pool — garden bungalows, two pools and river activities, a middle ground between the raw rafts and the luxury floats. But come prepared for a limited, slow restaurant, a remote setting far from town, and some rooms that are older than others.
💡 Check before you book
These 3 points matter to some travellers — make sure they fit your trip (we have added the workaround).
  • 💡If you care a lot about food and in-restaurant service — the menu is fairly limited and a la carte is slow → pre-book a buffet-inclusive package, or accept that food choice is narrower than in town.
  • 💡If you want a room in good condition with a full river view — there are both older and newer zones → request a newer-zone room or a Deluxe River View when booking, and book ahead, especially for long weekends.
  • 💡If you plan to dart between many sights and head out often — it is deep in Sai Yok, with boat access and long drives → keep it as the riverside-relaxation leg of your trip and plan sightseeing days separately.

Insider Tips
🛥️
Check the boat times at Phutakien Pier
You reach the resort by longtail boat from Phutakien Pier on scheduled runs. Check the boat times and parking with the resort in advance so you don't wait around.
🛏️
Ask for a newer-zone or Deluxe River View room
There are both older and newer room zones here. Request a renovated room or a Deluxe River View when booking to get the best room condition and river view.
🍽️
Pick a buffet-inclusive package
The restaurant menu is limited and dish-by-dish ordering is slow. A package that includes the buffet runs smoother, since it's hard to head out for meals from here.
🦇
Set aside time for Lawa Cave
Lawa Cave is near the resort, reachable by boat or car. It's a stalactite cave guests like to visit — set aside half a day for the Sai Yok nature sights.

Where is River Kwai Resotel, and how do you get there?
It sits on the River Kwai Noi at 55 Moo 5, Wang Krachae, Sai Yok district, Kanchanaburi. Most guests park at Phutakien Pier and take a short longtail-boat ride in (the resort runs scheduled transfer boats). It is about 1.5 hours by road from Kanchanaburi town and roughly 3 hours from Bangkok. Check the boat times and parking with the resort in advance.
How much does River Kwai Resotel cost, and what rooms are there?

Does it have electricity and air-con? How is it different from a floating raft?
Yes, it has everything. River Kwai Resotel is land-based riverside bungalows with air-conditioning, hot water, Wi-Fi and swimming pools, unlike a no-electricity floating raft such as River Kwai Jungle Rafts. It suits travellers who want the boat-into-the-jungle riverside feeling but still want hotel-style comfort.

There are two pools (one heated with a Jacuzzi), river-swim spots, kayaks and bicycles to borrow. It is near Lawa Cave, Sai Yok Noi Waterfall, Hellfire Pass, and Tham Krasae Station on the Death Railway. Some evenings there is a Mon dance show by the nearby community.

When is the best time to go, and how should I book?
The cool season (Nov–Feb) has the best weather, and the heated pool helps a lot. In the rainy season (May–Oct) the river can run fast and murky. Book ahead, especially for long weekends, request a newer-zone or river-view room, and choose a package that includes the buffet and boat transfer, with Free Cancellation in case plans change.
