Shanghai Mansion Bangkok — 1930s Shanghai tucked into the chaos of Yaowarat
You're walking down Yaowarat Road amid neon signs, food-stall smoke and jostling traffic, when suddenly you find a door that leads into another world — Shanghai Mansion Bangkok, a boutique hotel that drops 1930s Shanghai right into the middle of Chinatown. Red lanterns, dragon-pattern wallpaper, a quiet inner courtyard and the sound of jazz drifting from the Red Rose every night. 69 individually decorated rooms, a 4-minute walk from MRT Wat Mangkon, from approx. THB 2,500/night.
Shanghai Mansion opened in 2005 in an old building on Yaowarat Road and was fully renovated in 2013. The owners set out to tell Chinatown's story through the eyes of Art Deco Shanghai — red lanterns, dark lacquered wood furniture and dragon-and-flower wallpaper. Step through the door and the street noise almost disappears, leaving an inner courtyard with a fishpond and greenery that nearly every review says made them fall for the place from the first step.
All 69 rooms are individually decorated, from the Mei Hua Superior and Ying Hua Deluxe up to the Mu Dan suites. Each plays with bold colour — emerald-green walls with a red chandelier, or golden-yellow walls with dragon wallpaper — soft beds, silk cushions and carefully chosen period pieces. But honestly, the rooms here aren't large, especially the Superior category, and because this is an older building in the centre of town, many inner rooms get very little natural light and can feel dark — the point guests raise most often.
"So beautifully decorated you want to photograph the whole room — it feels like stepping into an old Chinese film. But our room was on the inside with no real window; we had to keep the lights on even in the daytime. If you need natural light, ask for a room with a street view."
The heart of the hotel is the Red Rose Restaurant & Jazz Bar on the ground floor, serving modern Chinese cuisine with a live jazz band every night, half restaurant and half old-Shanghai bar. The food draws praise for flavour, though several reviews note it's pricier than you'd expect for the Yaowarat area — fair enough, given that some of Bangkok's most famous street food is just a few steps out the door. The in-house Burasari spa is award-winning and popular for a massage after a long day of walking.
Location is where Shanghai Mansion wins outright. It sits right on Yaowarat Road — step out the door and you're in the most famous street-food strip in Bangkok: roast duck, noodles, dim sum and desserts all within walking distance. Crucially, it's about a 4-minute walk (roughly 330 metres) to MRT Wat Mangkon, so you can hop the metro to Hua Lamphong, Sam Yan or Silom with ease. The trade-off is that Yaowarat is busy and noisy late into the night — street-facing rooms get the atmosphere but also the sound.
To be honest, Shanghai Mansion suits people who come for the atmosphere and location rather than those who need a large, quiet room. If you want to wake up in the middle of Chinatown, eat street food half the night and come back to a room that looks like a film set, it delivers that experience at an affordable price. But if you're here to relax and prize bright, spacious rooms and silence, this district and this room style may not be for you. A score of 9.2 from 108 Trip.com reviews shows most people who choose it for its charm come away happy.
A tip from reading the reviews: book a Deluxe category or above and specify a room with a real window (street or courtyard view) to avoid the dark inner rooms. If you're worried about noise, a courtyard-facing room is much quieter than one on Yaowarat. And don't miss going down for a night of jazz at the Red Rose — you can sit with a drink and listen even without a full dinner.
