Wiang Inn Hotel — a downtown Chiang Rai hotel within a 5-minute walk of the Night Bazaar

If you want a hotel where you can walk straight from the lobby to the Night Bazaar, the Clock Tower and the bus terminal without paying a premium, Wiang Inn Hotel is a Chiang Rai classic that has anchored the city center since 1985. It's a 4-star, 260-room city hotel on Phaholyothin Road with an outdoor pool, a restaurant and free parking. It isn't a brand-new property, but the location and price keep guests coming back. Standard rooms start at approximately ฿1,400/night.

Our Full Review

Wiang Inn's selling point is straightforward — location. The hotel sits on Phaholyothin Road in the heart of Chiang Rai, a short walk from the Night Bazaar, the Clock Tower and the old bus terminal. For travelers without their own car, or anyone who wants to eat and wander at night and stroll back to bed, that's an edge the riverside resorts on the Kok River simply can't offer.

The hotel opened in 1985 and had a major renovation around 2014. It's a classic high-rise block with 260 rooms, and the rooms are more spacious than you'd expect at this price — Superior and Deluxe categories run roughly 27–42 sqm, dressed in carpet and warm woodwork with a distinctive Lanna-style art panel above each bed. All rooms have air conditioning, a minibar and free Wi-Fi. Most reviews call the rooms clean with comfortable beds, even if the styling reads as a hotel from an earlier era.

"Spacious, clean room with a comfortable bed. The best part is that the Night Bazaar is just a 5-minute walk away — easy to head out and come back without a taxi."

The breakfast buffet spread at Wiang Inn Hotel's restaurant in Chiang Rai

The facilities cover the basics well for a city hotel — there's an outdoor swimming pool, the Wiang Inn Coffee Shop serving Thai, Chinese and European dishes, a lobby lounge, and Thai massage/spa services. A favorite detail is the free, generous parking, which is hard to find downtown. The hotel sits next to an 18-hole golf course and has large meeting and banquet halls, making it popular with tour groups and conferences.

The breakfast buffet earns praise for its range, with both Asian and Western options. One thing to know: when tour groups come down at the same time the restaurant gets crowded and dishes run out fast — going down a little early, before the group rush, is far more relaxed. The evening lounge is quiet and pleasant for a drink after a full day of sightseeing.

To be honest about the downsides — Wiang Inn is a long-established hotel and a fair number of reviews reflect that. Some furniture and décor look dated, a few bathrooms are cramped, hot water can be inconsistent, and the pool sits in a spot that gets no direct sun all day, so the water runs cold and some tiles show wear. There are also reviews about weak Wi-Fi signal in spots. Overall the scores still hold up well — Trip.com 8.8 from 371 reviews, and Tripadvisor 3.5/5, ranked #19 of 106 hotels in Chiang Rai.

Wiang Inn Hotel

To be clear, Wiang Inn isn't the place to come for luxury or a fresh design. But if you value a central location, an affordable price (from about ฿1,400/night, rising in the cool season and over holidays), spacious rooms and free parking, it does its job very well. It suits travelers who spend most of their time out of the room — visiting the White Temple and Black House, walking the Night Bazaar — and just need a comfortable base in town.

A tip from reading the reviews: ask for a renovated room or a higher floor to avoid the older furnishings and get a more open city view. If you plan to hit the Night Bazaar every night, this location is excellent value. And if you're arriving by car or as a group, the free parking genuinely saves money compared with other downtown hotels.

🎯
This place is a great fit if...
Wiang Inn Hotel is a classic city hotel that sells on a central location and an affordable price — a 5-minute walk to the Night Bazaar, spacious rooms and free parking. Just accept that it's a long-established property: the décor and pool feel dated, and it's not the place if you want something new or luxurious.
💡 Check before you book
These 3 points matter to some travellers — make sure they fit your trip (we have added the workaround).
  • 💡If you want a brand-new, modern-design hotel — Wiang Inn dates from 1985 and the styling is from an earlier era → consider a Kok River resort or a newer boutique in town.
  • 💡If the pool is central to your stay — it sits in a no-sun corner with cold water and worn tiles → pick a hotel with a riverside or sunlit pool instead.
  • 💡If you're sensitive to the morning crush — it's a tour-group favorite and the restaurant gets packed when groups come down → eat before the group rush or request a higher floor to avoid the bustle.
