Koh Samui seafood has a real edge because the ingredients come from the waters around the island and the Surat Thani coast, one of Thailand's big prawn sources. A lot of places serve it proper southern style, bold and punchy — sour curry, pad cha, spicy salads, and grilled dishes. Some are simple local shacks with light prices, others lean on a sunset view over the beach. We've ranked them by how popular they are and how good the value is for the price, but taste is personal, so use the area and your budget as your main guide.
Read before you go
Prices for fresh seafood rise and fall with the season and the monsoon, especially lobster, crab and larger shellfish. The prices we list are rough ranges from reviews. When you go, ask the price per kilo or per dish before you order anything fresh that gets weighed, so there are no surprises when the bill comes.
10 Koh Samui seafood spots people actually go to
Sabieng Lae Samui (Lamai Beach)
One of the most talked-about southern Thai and seafood spots on Samui, right on the water at Lamai Beach, with bold authentic southern flavours. The dishes you'll see on nearly every table are stir-fried pork with shrimp paste (moo kua koei), stir-fried clams (wai kua), and sour curry with sea bass. Prices run higher than your average local shack, but the flavour and setting are worth it — good for a special meal.
Bang Po Seafood (Tako)
A beachfront spot on Bang Po, on the north side of the island, and a name both locals and the Michelin Guide bring up. The setting is easy-going right on the sand, and the kitchen is a team of local cooks who've been at it for years. The southern seafood is fresh — sour curry, prawns fried in tamarind sauce — and prices are reasonable for the view. Good for an evening stop to catch the sunset.
Krua Chao Baan (Lamai Beach)
An old-school home-style spot right on the water at Lamai Beach, stretched out along the sand. Prices are lighter than many places and the food comes out fast. The standouts are properly southern — stir-fried clams pad cha, clams kua, kua curry with hed loop mushrooms, and a spicy salad of small clams with sea grapes. Good if you want local flavour that isn't fancy but is full-on.
Krua Bophut (Bophut Fishermen's Village)
A long-running Thai and seafood spot at the far end of the Bophut Fishermen's Village. You can sit inside the old wooden house, out on the deck, or down on the sand right by the water. The ingredients are fresh from the fishing village and prices are fair. Good if you're staying around Bophut or Chaweng and want to stroll the village then carry on to a beachside dinner.
Tha Ruea Samui Seafood
A Thai-style seafood spot that's all about fresh ingredients — you pick them and say how you want them cooked: prawns, shellfish, crab, fish, and seasonal lobster. The dishes people love are clam muscles pad cha, raw prawns in fish sauce, thick spicy tom yum seafood, and fresh oysters. There are also single-plate dishes that are quick, easy and cheap.
Krua Sawoey Samui (Nathon Beach)
A spot right on Nathon Beach near the pier, with a sea view and sunset. It does fresh seafood, Thai food and southern dishes. The things people order most are prawns stir-fried with shrimp paste and stink beans, sea bass fried with fish sauce, tamarind prawns, and blue crab in curry powder. Good if you're waiting on a ferry or staying on the Nathon side.
Red Snapper (Bophut Fishermen's Village)
A seafood and grill spot with a nice atmosphere in the Bophut Fishermen's Village, good for couples or a relaxed dinner. There's grilled red snapper, grilled seafood and wine. Prices are mid to higher than the local shacks, but you get the atmosphere and service, and you can carry on straight from the village walking street.
2 Fishes (Bophut Fishermen's Village)
A beachfront spot in the fishing village that serves both local seafood and Australian steak. The sea view is lovely, and it works for a group where some people want seafood and others want steak — you can settle it all in one place. Prices are mid to higher, the service is good, and it's a popular dinner choice in the Bophut area.
Samui Seafood Grill (Chaweng Beach)
A seafood and grill spot in a Chaweng Beach soi with a laid-back vibe and live music, focused on grilled prawns, crab and lobster, with locally sourced ingredients. Good if you're staying around Chaweng and want grilled seafood then a bar in the same area. Prices are mid and up depending on what you order.
Baitong @ Banana Fan Sea (Chaweng Beach)
The beachfront restaurant of a resort on Chaweng Beach, with a setting on the water that's quieter than the Chaweng road strip. It serves Thai food and seafood — yellow curry with blue crab, mussels with lemongrass. Good for a special meal or couples who want a calm beachside setting. Prices run higher than the average spot, as you'd expect from a resort.

Pick a spot by where you're staying
Samui is a big island and a full loop takes a while, so picking a spot near where you're staying is easier — especially for dinner, when some stretches of road are dark and some of the hill roads are steep. Riding a motorbike at night here needs extra care.
- Chaweng Beach — lots of options, both grilled seafood and resort restaurants. Good if you want to eat then walk around or carry on to a bar.
- Lamai Beach — the home of bold southern Thai and seafood spots like Sabieng Lae and Krua Chao Baan. Not far from Chaweng.
- Bophut / Fishermen's Village — old wooden houses by the water; walk the walking street then carry on to dinner.
- Bang Po Beach (north side) — local spots with great views where locals go and prices are friendly, but a bit far from the Chaweng–Lamai zone.
- Nathon Beach — the pier side, good if you're waiting on a ferry or staying on the west side, with sunset views.
Seafood dishes worth trying on Koh Samui
- Fresh oysters — eaten with fried shallots, garlic and seafood dipping sauce; a Surat Thani specialty.
- Raw prawns in fish sauce — fresh prawns, bold, sour and spicy; plenty of places do it well.
- Stir-fried clams / clam muscles pad cha — southern dishes made with local shellfish, rich and intense, eaten with hot rice.
- Sour curry / yellow curry with fish or crab — sour-spicy southern curries, slurped hot, and a great match for fresh seafood.
- Blue crab in curry powder and tamarind prawns — two crowd-pleasers ordered at nearly every place.
Eating seafood that's good value and safe
For fresh items sold by weight (lobster, crab, big shellfish), always ask the price per kilo before you order. Pick things that look genuinely fresh — clear eyes, firm shells. If your stomach is sensitive, skip the raw stuff on very hot days, and if you're heading to a beachfront spot during the monsoon with strong winds and big waves, check the weather first — some places may close or move the tables inside.
