The heart of a short Satun trip is making the boat ride worth it. Most people fly into Hat Yai then drive about 2 hours to Pak Bara pier in La-ngu district, or if you drive yourself you can park in the lots around the pier. From Pak Bara, a speedboat straight to Koh Lipe takes about an hour and a half; pick a route that stops at Tarutao and Koh Khai and you add roughly another half hour. On this trip we plan to sleep one night on the island, because doing it as a day return means more than half the day stuck on the boat and missing Koh Lipe in the evening, which is when it looks its best.
The 2-day 1-night plan at a glance
- Day 1 β Morning travel to Pak Bara, board the speedboat with a stop at Tarutao and Koh Khai, reach Koh Lipe in the afternoon, check in, walk Pattaya Beach, then watch the sunset and stroll the Walking Street in the evening.
- Day 2 β Morning snorkeling tour around the islands (Jabang, Hin Ngam, Adang-Rawi, Koh Yang), back on the island for lunch at midday, then the afternoon boat back to Pak Bara.
- Where to stay β One night on Koh Lipe. Choose Pattaya Beach if you want to be near the Walking Street, or Sunrise / Sunset Beach if you want something quieter.
- Rough budget β Boat round trip Pak BaraβKoh Lipe about 700 THB/person/way, pier fee 20 THB, Tarutao national park fee for Thais 40 THB, a join snorkeling tour from about 600β750 THB/person, the rest is accommodation and food to your own taste.
Check the season before you book
Koh Lipe and the surrounding islands sit inside Tarutao National Park, which usually announces an island closure during the monsoon, roughly mid-May to mid-October. The calmest sea and clearest water is around November to April. If you're set on coming at the edge of the season, always check the park's announcements and the weather before you hit book on any boat.
Book the activities in your Satun trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want β prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 1 β Pak Bara, Tarutao, arriving at Koh Lipe
Day one is the travel day plus soaking up the island in the evening. Several operators run speedboats from Pak Bara to Koh Lipe, with the main departures around 11:30 and 13:30. If you want time to swim on the island in the evening, take a morning or midday boat, because a late-afternoon one gets you to the island right around dusk.

Day-one tips
ATMs on Koh Lipe are few and charge steep fees, and a lot of places take cash only. Withdraw enough on the mainland or in Hat Yai before you go. If you're coming in high season, book your room ahead, because beachfront rooms fill fast and prices jump sharply over long weekends.
Day 2 β snorkeling tour around the islands
The highlight of the trip is this morning. The water around Koh Lipe is crystal clear and the coral is still in good shape. The snorkeling tour takes you by longtail to the prettiest spots around the islands. Booking a join tour with a shop on the island is easy, or you can group up and charter a whole longtail if there are several of you. You can pick the inner zone, which is closer, or the outer zone, which is farther but has clearer water.

What to know before you get on the boat
Koh Lipe snorkeling tours are all shallow snorkeling, so even weak swimmers can go since there are life jackets and a guide. But some spots like Jabang have a strong current, so listen to the guide and don't step on the coral. Hin Son (the stacked-rock island) is currently off-limits for swimming because the current is very strong, so you can only stop to photograph it from the boat.
Pak BaraβKoh Lipe boats: what to know
The boat is the part people get most confused about when planning Satun. Pak Bara is the main pier with boats to Koh Lipe, Tarutao and the surrounding islands. Several operators run close, similar schedules at similar prices. Here's what you should know before buying a ticket.
- Boat times β Pak Bara to Koh Lipe main departures around 11:30 and 13:30. Return, Koh Lipe to Pak Bara, around 09:30 and 11:30. In high season some operators add extra runs, so double-check with your operator.
- Prices β speedboat tickets about 700 THB/person/way, plus the Pak Bara pier fee 20 THB/person, and the longtail shuttle to shore at Koh Lipe about 50 THB/person.
- Travel time β about 1.5 hours direct, roughly another half hour if you stop at Tarutao and Koh Khai.
- Park fees β if you go ashore on Tarutao or enter the park zone, about 40 THB for Thai adults; foreigners are charged more. Bring cash.
Which beach to stay on at Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe has three main beaches, each with its own mood. On a one-night trip, picking the beach that matches what you want pays off most, since walking across the island from one beach to another only takes a few minutes anyway.
Pattaya Beach
The main beach, clear water and white sand, close to the Walking Street and the boat drop-off. The most convenient for a short trip, but busy and lively in the evening.
Sunrise Beach
On the other side of the island, a longer and quieter beach, good for the sunrise. A few minutes' walk to the Walking Street.
Sunset Beach
A small beach on the west side, the least crowded, the spot for the sunset. Good if you genuinely want peace, but fewer accommodation and dining options.
