Satun in 2 Days, 1 Night Pak Bara, Tarutao, Koh Lipe

πŸ”„ Updated 21 Jun 2026

The heart of a short Satun trip is making the boat ride worth it. Most people fly into Hat Yai then drive about 2 hours to Pak Bara pier in La-ngu district, or if you drive yourself you can park in the lots around the pier. From Pak Bara, a speedboat straight to Koh Lipe takes about an hour and a half; pick a route that stops at Tarutao and Koh Khai and you add roughly another half hour. On this trip we plan to sleep one night on the island, because doing it as a day return means more than half the day stuck on the boat and missing Koh Lipe in the evening, which is when it looks its best.

The 2-day 1-night plan at a glance

  • Day 1 β€” Morning travel to Pak Bara, board the speedboat with a stop at Tarutao and Koh Khai, reach Koh Lipe in the afternoon, check in, walk Pattaya Beach, then watch the sunset and stroll the Walking Street in the evening.
  • Day 2 β€” Morning snorkeling tour around the islands (Jabang, Hin Ngam, Adang-Rawi, Koh Yang), back on the island for lunch at midday, then the afternoon boat back to Pak Bara.
  • Where to stay β€” One night on Koh Lipe. Choose Pattaya Beach if you want to be near the Walking Street, or Sunrise / Sunset Beach if you want something quieter.
  • Rough budget β€” Boat round trip Pak Bara–Koh Lipe about 700 THB/person/way, pier fee 20 THB, Tarutao national park fee for Thais 40 THB, a join snorkeling tour from about 600–750 THB/person, the rest is accommodation and food to your own taste.

Check the season before you book

Koh Lipe and the surrounding islands sit inside Tarutao National Park, which usually announces an island closure during the monsoon, roughly mid-May to mid-October. The calmest sea and clearest water is around November to April. If you're set on coming at the edge of the season, always check the park's announcements and the weather before you hit book on any boat.

Day 1 β€” Pak Bara, Tarutao, arriving at Koh Lipe

Day one is the travel day plus soaking up the island in the evening. Several operators run speedboats from Pak Bara to Koh Lipe, with the main departures around 11:30 and 13:30. If you want time to swim on the island in the evening, take a morning or midday boat, because a late-afternoon one gets you to the island right around dusk.

Day 1

Boat to Koh Lipe

09:00
Arrive at Pak Bara pier, check in for your boat ticketPak Bara is in La-ngu district, about 2 hours from Hat Yai. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure to get your sticker and pay the 20 THB/person pier fee.
11:30
Boat leaves Pak Bara, stops at Tarutao and Koh KhaiMany routes stop so you can get off and photograph the stone archway on Koh Khai and pass in front of Tarutao. If you want to properly go ashore on Tarutao, there's an extra park fee, 40 THB for Thai adults.
13:00
Reach Koh Lipe, transfer by longtail to shoreThe big boat moors at a buoy out at sea, so you transfer to a longtail to reach the beach, about 50 THB/person. Check in, then have lunch by the beach.
15:00
Swim at Pattaya Beach or walk across to Sunrise BeachPattaya Beach is the main beach, clear water and white sand, easy to reach from most accommodation. If you want it quieter, you can cut across the island to Sunrise Beach in a few minutes.
18:00
Watch the sunset at Sunset BeachSunset Beach is on the other side of the island, a short walk from the Walking Street. It's the known spot for catching the sunset, so go a bit early to grab a good seat.
19:30
Walk the Koh Lipe Walking Street, dinnerThe Walking Street runs through the middle of the island, linking Pattaya Beach with Sunrise Beach, lined with grilled seafood, bars and snacks the whole way. It buzzes from evening until around 10 pm.

Day-one tips

ATMs on Koh Lipe are few and charge steep fees, and a lot of places take cash only. Withdraw enough on the mainland or in Hat Yai before you go. If you're coming in high season, book your room ahead, because beachfront rooms fill fast and prices jump sharply over long weekends.

Day 2 β€” snorkeling tour around the islands

The highlight of the trip is this morning. The water around Koh Lipe is crystal clear and the coral is still in good shape. The snorkeling tour takes you by longtail to the prettiest spots around the islands. Booking a join tour with a shop on the island is easy, or you can group up and charter a whole longtail if there are several of you. You can pick the inner zone, which is closer, or the outer zone, which is farther but has clearer water.

Day 2

Out to sea around Koh Lipe

07:30
Breakfast at your hotel, leave your bags behindCheck out before the tour and leave your bags at the resort. Keep breakfast light, since a full-day tour usually includes lunch.
09:00
Tour heads out β€” the Jabang channelJabang is the standout spot, an underwater rock pile covered in pink and purple soft coral that people call the seven-colored coral. The current is fairly strong, so wear your life jacket and hold the rope the guide has set up.
10:30
Stop at Hin Ngam for photos of the round-stone beachHin Ngam has no sandy beach, but it's covered in smooth, glossy black round stones that glint beautifully when the waves wash over them. Local legend says there's a curse for taking the stones home.
11:30
Snorkel at Adang-Rawi and Koh YangThe water around Adang-Rawi is clear with plenty of fish. If you've got the energy, you can climb the Pha Chado viewpoint on Adang and see the whole of Koh Lipe. Koh Yang is a shallow coral spot, good for underwater photos.
12:30
Lunch and swimming at a white-sand beachMost tours stop at a white-sand beach or head back to eat on the island. Take a long break to swim before the tour boat drops you back at the beach.
14:00
Grab your bags, longtail out to the buoyHead back to your hotel for your bags, then take a longtail out to board the big boat at the buoy. Leave a buffer before your return departure.
15:00
Speedboat back to Pak BaraThe main return boats from Koh Lipe to Pak Bara run from morning to afternoon. Check the last departure with the operator when you buy your outbound ticket. Back on the mainland you can carry on to Hat Yai or into Satun town.

What to know before you get on the boat

Koh Lipe snorkeling tours are all shallow snorkeling, so even weak swimmers can go since there are life jackets and a guide. But some spots like Jabang have a strong current, so listen to the guide and don't step on the coral. Hin Son (the stacked-rock island) is currently off-limits for swimming because the current is very strong, so you can only stop to photograph it from the boat.

Pak Bara–Koh Lipe boats: what to know

The boat is the part people get most confused about when planning Satun. Pak Bara is the main pier with boats to Koh Lipe, Tarutao and the surrounding islands. Several operators run close, similar schedules at similar prices. Here's what you should know before buying a ticket.

  • Boat times β€” Pak Bara to Koh Lipe main departures around 11:30 and 13:30. Return, Koh Lipe to Pak Bara, around 09:30 and 11:30. In high season some operators add extra runs, so double-check with your operator.
  • Prices β€” speedboat tickets about 700 THB/person/way, plus the Pak Bara pier fee 20 THB/person, and the longtail shuttle to shore at Koh Lipe about 50 THB/person.
  • Travel time β€” about 1.5 hours direct, roughly another half hour if you stop at Tarutao and Koh Khai.
  • Park fees β€” if you go ashore on Tarutao or enter the park zone, about 40 THB for Thai adults; foreigners are charged more. Bring cash.

Which beach to stay on at Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe has three main beaches, each with its own mood. On a one-night trip, picking the beach that matches what you want pays off most, since walking across the island from one beach to another only takes a few minutes anyway.

Convenient

Pattaya Beach

The main beach, clear water and white sand, close to the Walking Street and the boat drop-off. The most convenient for a short trip, but busy and lively in the evening.

Quieter

Sunrise Beach

On the other side of the island, a longer and quieter beach, good for the sunrise. A few minutes' walk to the Walking Street.

Peaceful

Sunset Beach

A small beach on the west side, the least crowded, the spot for the sunset. Good if you genuinely want peace, but fewer accommodation and dining options.

FAQ

Can you reach Koh Lipe on a 2-day 1-night Satun trip?

Yes, and the timing works out nicely. Day one you take the boat from Pak Bara mid-morning to midday, stop at Tarutao and Koh Khai, then sleep on Koh Lipe for a night. Day two you head out on a snorkeling tour around the islands in the morning and catch the boat back in the afternoon. Doing it as a day return means more than half the day on the boat and missing the island in the evening, so we recommend staying one night.

How much is the boat from Pak Bara to Koh Lipe, and what time does it leave?

Speedboat tickets are about 700 THB per person per way, plus a 20 THB Pak Bara pier fee. Main outbound departures are around 11:30 and 13:30, and the return from Koh Lipe to Pak Bara is around 09:30 and 11:30. It takes about an hour and a half, plus another half hour if you stop at Tarutao.

When is the best time to visit Satun and Koh Lipe?

November to April is the season with calm seas, clear water and the islands fully open. Mid-May to mid-October is the monsoon, when Tarutao National Park usually announces an island closure. Check the park's announcements and the weather before booking a boat.

How do you book a snorkeling tour at Koh Lipe, and can you go if you can't swim?

Booking a join tour with a shop on the island is easy, from about 600–750 THB per person, or charter a whole longtail for around 2,500 THB if there are several of you. It's all shallow snorkeling with life jackets and a guide, so weak swimmers can go too. But some spots like the Jabang channel have a strong current, so listen to your guide.

Can you withdraw cash on Koh Lipe, and what should you prepare?

ATMs on the island are few and charge steep fees, and many places take cash only, so withdraw enough on the mainland or in Hat Yai before you go. Also pack flip-flops, reef-friendly sunscreen and quick-dry clothes, since day two you'll get wet on the snorkeling tour.
