Bringing kids to Satun is different from other coasts because many of Koh Lipe's beaches are shallow with gentle waves, especially Sunrise Beach with its long, gradual stretch of white sand — kids can wade several meters before the water reaches their waist, and play in the water and build sandcastles all day. But Koh Lipe sits out in the open sea and you have to take a speedboat roughly an hour and a half to get there, so kids prone to seasickness need to be prepared. That's why we put a mainland day first to let kids settle in before crossing over to stay on the island. If your child is very young or scared of boats, you can skip the island day and stick to the mainland and still have a great trip.
Before you go: what to pack
- Seasickness medicine — the Pak Bara to Koh Lipe speedboat takes about an hour and a half, and waves can get rough on some days. For kids who get sick easily, give the medicine half an hour before boarding and have them sit mid-boat.
- Kids' life jacket — boats provide them, but if your child is very small, bringing one that fits properly is more reassuring. They can wear it for swimming at the beach too.
- Wet-friendly closed-heel shoes — the beach, coral rocks, and the slippery floor at Wang Sai Thong all make flip-flops a bad idea since they slip off easily.
- Sunscreen, hats, long-sleeve sun shirts — the southern sea sun is strong and kids burn easily. Reef-safe sunscreen also helps avoid harming the coral.
- Cash — there are few ATMs on Koh Lipe and they charge high fees. Many shops take cash only, so bring enough.
- Book lodging and boats ahead — high season gets crowded and shallow-beach stays fill fast. Book at least 1–2 weeks before you go.
About timing
Koh Lipe and Tarutao are best from Nov–Apr, when the sea is clear and the waves gentle — ideal for kids. From May–Oct it's monsoon season, with rough seas and some boat runs cancelled, and Tarutao National Park closes for part of it. If you're bringing kids, avoid the rainy season.
Book the activities in your Satun trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 1 — Mainland: Wang Sai Thong Waterfall + overnight at Pak Bara
Spend the first day on the mainland so kids can ease into the trip without facing a boat right away. The highlight is Wang Sai Thong Waterfall in La-ngu district — a multi-tiered limestone waterfall with clear emerald-green water and shallow pools where kids can splash around in cool freshwater. Entry is very cheap, around 20 THB for adults and 10 THB for kids, open 08:00–17:00. After that, stay near Pak Bara or La-ngu so you can catch an early boat the next morning without rushing.

About Wang Sai Thong Waterfall
During the rainy season (May–Nov) the water runs strong and murky, not suitable for kids to get in. If you want kids to swim safely, go in the dry season when the water is clear and the flow is gentle. The rapids suit older kids and adults more than little ones — check water conditions with the staff before getting in.
Day 2 — Cross to Koh Lipe, swim the shallow beaches
On day two, take the speedboat from Pak Bara across to Koh Lipe, about an hour and a half. A round-trip adult ticket runs around 1,200 THB; kids aged 4–11 cost less (around 500 THB per trip), and children under 3 usually ride free. On arrival there's a separate island entry fee of a few hundred THB per person. Once you've checked in, take the kids down to Sunrise Beach, which has long stretches of white sand that's shallow and clear — kids can wade several meters and the water is still only knee- to waist-deep. It's the easiest beach on the island for parents to stand and watch their kids swim.

Which Koh Lipe beach suits kids
Sunrise Beach (east side) is the shallowest and calmest, ideal for kids to swim. Pattaya Beach (south side) is the main beach with the most shops and lodging, but boats come and go often, so keep kids away from the boat zone. Sunset Beach is small and quiet — better for watching the sunset than letting kids swim.
Day 3 — Tarutao island, nature all around
On the last day, stop at Tarutao island on the way back from Koh Lipe to Pak Bara, since several boat runs stop to let you go ashore. Tarutao is a large island within a national park; the park entry fee for Thais is around 40 THB for adults and 20 THB for kids. The spot kids love is Phante Malacca Bay by the pier, with a sandy beach and a visitor center that tells the island's story — kids get to see monkeys and real nature. If you'd rather not stop, you can take the boat straight back to Pak Bara and do Tarutao as a separate day trip another day.
Phante Malacca Bay (Tarutao)
The island's main pier area, with a sandy beach, a visitor center, and a spot to feed/watch monkeys. Kids can stroll a short distance — a good stop on the way back.
Ao Molae (Tarutao)
About 4 km from the pier, a long quiet beach with clear water — good for families who want a peaceful overnight on the island. Park bungalows can be booked.
Koh Khai (en route)
A small island with a natural stone arch. Some boat runs stop for photos and a quick dip in the shallows — kids love the white-sand beach here.
Sunrise Beach (Koh Lipe)
One last morning before the boat leaves. Shallow and clear — kids can get one more early swim in while the sun is still gentle.

What to eat when traveling with kids
Satun is a Muslim town, so most food is halal and non-spicy options aren't hard to find. Kids can have roti, Hainanese chicken rice, rice with an omelet, or grilled seafood without chili. On Koh Lipe, Walking Street has seafood, made-to-order dishes, and desserts. Prices on the island are noticeably higher than on the mainland since everything has to come by boat. A breakfast kids love is roti with sweet pulled tea.
- Roti + pulled tea — the classic Muslim-town pairing: roti crispy outside and soft inside, drizzled with condensed milk, which kids love. Easy to find in town and on the island.
- Grilled seafood without chili — grilled fish and prawns ordered plain for the kids, both on the mainland and on Koh Lipe's Walking Street.
- Chicken rice / rice with omelet — safe choices for kids who don't eat spicy yet, available at most made-to-order shops.
What kind of stay suits a family
With kids, pick a place right on a shallow beach like Sunrise Beach, so kids can walk straight from the room into the water without another boat ride — and choose a family room or one with an extra bed. If you want easy access to restaurants and evening food, Pattaya Beach is closer to Walking Street but more crowded with boats coming and going often. For the first night on the mainland, stay near Pak Bara or La-ngu so the morning boat is easy to catch.

This 3-day plan is built for families with preschool- to primary-age kids, focused on shallow seas where kids can swim safely and nature activities that don't require long walks. If your child is very young or scared of boats, drop the Koh Lipe day and do the mainland — Wang Sai Thong Waterfall and Tarutao as a day trip — and it still holds together. With more time, add a day of snorkeling around Koh Lipe to see the coral, which older kids enjoy.
