How to Arrive and Reach the Islands

The first thing to understand is that Satun has no airport. The nearest airport with the most flights is Hat Yai (in Songkhla province); from there you take a van into Satun town or straight to Pak Bara Pier to catch a boat to the islands. The trip breaks down into three main legs: getting to Satun (plane + van), reaching the islands from Pak Bara Pier (boats to Koh Lipe/Tarutao), and road links to neighbouring provinces like Trang. Get the order right and the connections flow smoothly, with no need to overnight in Hat Yai.

Fly into Hat Yai first, then how to continue

Hat Yai Airport (HDY) has several flights a day from Bangkok (Don Mueang/Suvarnabhumi), on both budget and full-service carriers. Once you land, there are two main choices: head into Satun town first, or go straight to Pak Bara Pier for the islands. The distance from Hat Yai Airport to Pak Bara is around 2 hours, depending on traffic and weather.

Hat Yai-Pak Bara vans: schedules, prices, pickup points

The Hat Yai-Pak Bara van is the lifeline for travellers heading to the islands. Bus companies run regular services throughout the day, and you can usually board without booking ahead on a weekday. But in high season or on long weekends it gets busy, so booking ahead or arriving early gives more peace of mind.

• Fare — the scheduled Hat Yai-Pak Bara van is around 120 THB per person; an online-booked airport pickup runs higher, from around 250 THB.
• Schedule — from Hat Yai, the first van leaves around 06:00 and the last around 19:00, roughly every 30 minutes · from Pak Bara, the first leaves around 06:15 and the last around 17:00.
• Travel time — usually around 1.5-2 hours, but heavy rain or traffic can stretch it to 3 hours, so always allow extra time.
• Pickup points in Hat Yai — there are both in-town van stands in Hat Yai and airport pickup services. Confirm clearly with the Satun van stand at the bus terminal, or with the operator you booked, exactly where they pick up.

Pak Bara Pier — Satun's gateway to the islands

Pak Bara Pier, in La-ngu district, is the main pier where boats depart for Koh Lipe, Koh Tarutao, Koh Khai, and the other islands in Tarutao National Park. There's a pier-use fee of 20 THB per person. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your boat leaves to check in, get your boat company's wristband, and load your luggage in time.

Pak Bara → Koh Lipe: how to get there and what it costs

Koh Lipe is Satun's most popular destination, reached by speedboat from Pak Bara in around 1.5 hours (add about half an hour if the boat stops at Koh Tarutao/Koh Khai along the way). Koh Lipe has no large pier, so the speedboat anchors offshore and a longtail boat ferries you to the beach. The beach-transfer fare is usually included in package tickets.

Pak Bara → Koh Tarutao: how to get there and park fees

Koh Tarutao is a large island in Tarutao National Park, much closer to Pak Bara than Koh Lipe. The speedboat from Pak Bara takes around 30 minutes. It suits both day-trippers and those who want to overnight in the park's bungalows or campground. The atmosphere is quieter than Koh Lipe, with a focus on nature and the history of the old prison.

• Boats to Tarutao — usually a 11:30 departure, with a 14:30 added in high season; the trip takes around 30 minutes from Pak Bara. The Tarutao-Pak Bara return often has just one mid-morning departure, around 10:30. Always check with the boat company.
• Tarutao National Park fee — around 40 THB for Thais, around 220 THB for foreigners (children pay reduced rates), paid on arrival at the island.
• Pak Bara pier fee — 20 THB per person, the same as on every boat.
• Overnight stays — Tarutao has park bungalows and a campground, booked in advance through the national park's system. They fill up fast in high season.

Road links to Trang and neighbouring provinces

Satun pairs easily with Trang, and many people combine both into a single Satun-Trang trip, or fly into Trang and enter Satun from there. Here are the rough distances and times between the main connection points. Always allow extra time when it rains, since the southern roads get slick and traffic slows down.

• Hat Yai → Satun — about 96 km, around 1.5-2 hours by van, with fares starting at around 120 THB.
• Hat Yai → Trang — the van takes around 2.5 hours, fares around 120-130 THB; it's a route travellers linking the two provinces use often.
• Trang → Satun (town) — around 1.5 hours by van, fares around 120-150 THB, handy for visiting both provinces together.
• Trang has an airport — if you can find a flight into Trang, you can use it as a southern gateway into Satun too. Choose based on airfares and flight times.

Travel tips worth knowing

• Avoid monsoon season if you want to dive — roughly mid-May to mid-October brings strong winds and waves, with parts of the park closed and fewer boats. The popular high season is November to April.
• Allow time for the van and boat connections — southern vans depend on traffic and rain, so don't book a boat that cuts it too close. Leave at least an hour's buffer for van delays.
• Carry cash — pier fees, park fees, and many island shops take cash mainly. ATMs on Koh Lipe are few and charge high fees.
• Keep your boat wristband safe — boat companies use wristband colours to mark your departure and return. Lose it and you may waste time re-confirming your identity.
• Always check boat times beforehand — schedules change with the season and weather. Call or message the boat company to confirm departures before you actually set off.
