Sukhothai to Lampang
3-Day Itinerary — Old City to Horse Carriage Town

These two cities make a surprisingly good pairing. Sukhothai is a UNESCO World Heritage site where you can spend a whole day cycling among ancient ruins. Lampang is a quieter northern town that still has actual horse carriages running on its streets — plus an old riverside market you can wander without fighting crowds. The drive between them is about 3 hours, or you can take a bus. We've shaped this into a clean 3-day, 2-night plan that moves south to north, so there's no backtracking.

Sukhothai to Lampang 3-Day Itinerary — Old City to Horse Carriage Town

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Most visitors stop at Sukhothai and leave. But drive another 3 hours north and you hit Lampang — a town with a completely different vibe. From a field of ancient brick ruins you move to a riverside old town where you can hear horseshoes clapping on the road. This itinerary combines both cities in one trip, moving in a single direction, making it ideal for a long weekend: Saturday–Sunday plus one day of leave.

3-Day Plan Overview

  • Day 1 — Fly or drive into Sukhothai, check in, cycle the historical park in the late afternoon, and catch sunset light at Wat Mahathat.
  • Day 2 — Early morning at Wat Si Chum, breakfast in town, then travel to Lampang. Afternoon: explore the old town and Baan Sao Nak. Evening: Kad Kong Ta night market.
  • Day 3 — Morning horse carriage ride around the old city, drive out to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, pick up souvenirs (rooster bowl ceramics), then head home — or continue further north.

Key Direction Note

Always put Sukhothai first, Lampang second. Lampang sits further north, closer to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai — so if you want to extend the trip north afterward, you carry right on without doubling back.

Day 1 — Arrive in Sukhothai, Cycle the Old City at Golden Hour

Sukhothai Historical Park is about 12 km from the new town. The midday sun here is fierce, so we've shifted the cycling to late afternoon — you'll be more comfortable and the light for photos is much better.

Day 1

Arrive in Sukhothai · Cycle the Historical Park

Noon

13:00
Lunch — try Sukhothai-style noodles at a well-known spot like Ta Pui or Mai Klang Krung.Sukhothai noodles have a slightly sweet broth and come with sliced long beans. Around 45–60 THB per bowl.
15:00
Rent a bicycle at the park entrance and head into the inner zone: Wat Mahathat, Wat Sa Si, Wat Si Sawai.Entry fee: Thai nationals 20 THB, foreigners 200 THB (inner zone). Bicycle rental around 30 THB/day.

Day 2

Wat Si Chum · Travel to Lampang · Old City Evening

08:00

18:00
Stroll Kad Kong Ta — a riverside walking market along the Wang River (Saturday and Sunday evenings only).Try watermelon khao tan (rice crisps) and traditional sweets. The street is lined with old Burmese–Chinese–European shophouses worth a look.

Check Your Days Before You Book

Kad Kong Ta is open Saturday and Sunday evenings only. If you want to walk this market, make sure Day 2 falls on a Saturday or Sunday night — otherwise you'll arrive to find everything shut.

Day 3 — Horse Carriage Ride, Wat Phra That Lampang Luang

The horse carriage is Lampang's signature — this is the only city in Thailand where horse-drawn carriages still operate as a genuine tourist service. There are short and long city-loop routes. Go in the morning while the air is still cool, before the sun gets strong.

Day 3

Horse Carriage City Loop · Wat Phra That Lampang Luang · Souvenirs

08:30
Take a horse carriage around the old city — past temples, colonial-era shophouses, and along the Wang River.Carriage stands are dotted around the city centre. Ask the coachman about routes and agree on the price before you get in.
10:00
Stop by Wat Jedee Sao Lang — a temple with 20 chedis in a row. It's inside the city, so it's easy to include before heading out to the countryside.
11:00
Drive out to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang in Ko Kha district (~18 km from the city). One of the most intact Lanna wooden temple complexes in Thailand. Look for the inverted reflection of the chedi projected through a pinhole in the darkened wihan.
12:30
Lunch near Ko Kha, then drive back to the city.Several local spots around here with affordable, no-fuss food.
14:00
Buy souvenirs: Lampang khao tan rice crisps and the famous rooster-print ceramic bowls. The Thanabodi Ceramic Museum is the originator of the rooster-bowl tradition — you can visit the kilns while you're there.
15:30
Head home, or continue north to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai.Lampang sits right on the northern route — no need to double back south.

Getting Between the Two Cities

Recommended

Self-Drive

Most flexible option. Sukhothai to Lampang is about 3 hours. You'll also need a car to reach Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, which is 18 km outside the city.

Budget

Bus

Multiple daily departures from Sukhothai bus terminal. Fares around 240–670 THB depending on company and class. Book online in advance. Once in Lampang, use songthaew or taxi to get around.

Alternative

Rent a Car in Sukhothai

If you flew into Sukhothai and don't have a vehicle, renting for the whole trip makes sense — both cities have key sights spread well outside the centre.

Rough Budget per Person

  • 2 nights' accommodation — guesthouse or mid-range hotel around 700–1,500 THB/night
  • Historical park entry + bicycle — Thai nationals around 50 THB (20 entry + 30 bike hire)
  • Lampang horse carriage — depends on route and negotiation; confirm fare with the coachman first
  • Inter-city travel — bus around 240–670 THB, or fuel cost if driving
  • Food — Sukhothai noodles from 45–60 THB per bowl; most meals well under 150 THB per person

Honest Note

Both cities are relaxed and easy to explore at your own pace. That said, key sights sit outside the town centres (the historical park is 12 km out, Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is 18 km out). Without your own vehicle, budget extra time and factor in songthaew or taxi fares for those legs.

FAQ

How far is Sukhothai from Lampang, and how long does it take?

By car it's about 3 hours, roughly 200 km. A bus takes a little longer because of stops along the way. There are multiple daily departures from Sukhothai bus terminal.

Do you need to book the Lampang horse carriage in advance? How much does it cost?

No advance booking needed — just find a carriage stand in the city. There are short and long city-loop options. Prices depend on the route, so agree on a fare with the coachman before you board.

Can this be done in 2 days and 1 night?

You can, but it'll be tight and you'll have to cut things. Expect half a day at Sukhothai Historical Park, then rush to Lampang and squeeze in the horse carriage and Wat Phra That Lampang Luang in half a day. With 3 days and 2 nights you can move at a much more comfortable pace.

Is it better to stay in Sukhothai Old City or New Town?

Old city accommodation is quieter and closer to the historical park — you can cycle there easily. New town has more restaurants and convenience; it's about 15 minutes by car to the park. Pick based on your priorities.

Can you get to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang without a car?

Yes, but it takes effort. The temple is in Ko Kha district, about 18 km from the city. Without your own vehicle, you'd need to hire a songthaew or taxi for the return trip. Negotiate an all-in return fare including waiting time, since traffic through there can be thin.
