Most visitors stop at Sukhothai and leave. But drive another 3 hours north and you hit Lampang — a town with a completely different vibe. From a field of ancient brick ruins you move to a riverside old town where you can hear horseshoes clapping on the road. This itinerary combines both cities in one trip, moving in a single direction, making it ideal for a long weekend: Saturday–Sunday plus one day of leave.
3-Day Plan Overview
- Day 1 — Fly or drive into Sukhothai, check in, cycle the historical park in the late afternoon, and catch sunset light at Wat Mahathat.
- Day 2 — Early morning at Wat Si Chum, breakfast in town, then travel to Lampang. Afternoon: explore the old town and Baan Sao Nak. Evening: Kad Kong Ta night market.
- Day 3 — Morning horse carriage ride around the old city, drive out to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, pick up souvenirs (rooster bowl ceramics), then head home — or continue further north.
Key Direction Note
Always put Sukhothai first, Lampang second. Lampang sits further north, closer to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai — so if you want to extend the trip north afterward, you carry right on without doubling back.
Book the activities in your Sukhothai trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 1 — Arrive in Sukhothai, Cycle the Old City at Golden Hour
Sukhothai Historical Park is about 12 km from the new town. The midday sun here is fierce, so we've shifted the cycling to late afternoon — you'll be more comfortable and the light for photos is much better.

Day 2 — Wat Si Chum in the Morning, Then Travel to Lampang
Catch the remaining highlights before checkout, then make the move. Sukhothai to Lampang is about 3 hours by car. No vehicle? Buses run from Sukhothai bus terminal several times a day; fares are around 240–670 THB depending on the company and class.

Check Your Days Before You Book
Kad Kong Ta is open Saturday and Sunday evenings only. If you want to walk this market, make sure Day 2 falls on a Saturday or Sunday night — otherwise you'll arrive to find everything shut.
Day 3 — Horse Carriage Ride, Wat Phra That Lampang Luang
The horse carriage is Lampang's signature — this is the only city in Thailand where horse-drawn carriages still operate as a genuine tourist service. There are short and long city-loop routes. Go in the morning while the air is still cool, before the sun gets strong.

Getting Between the Two Cities
Self-Drive
Most flexible option. Sukhothai to Lampang is about 3 hours. You'll also need a car to reach Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, which is 18 km outside the city.
Bus
Multiple daily departures from Sukhothai bus terminal. Fares around 240–670 THB depending on company and class. Book online in advance. Once in Lampang, use songthaew or taxi to get around.
Rent a Car in Sukhothai
If you flew into Sukhothai and don't have a vehicle, renting for the whole trip makes sense — both cities have key sights spread well outside the centre.
Rough Budget per Person
- 2 nights' accommodation — guesthouse or mid-range hotel around 700–1,500 THB/night
- Historical park entry + bicycle — Thai nationals around 50 THB (20 entry + 30 bike hire)
- Lampang horse carriage — depends on route and negotiation; confirm fare with the coachman first
- Inter-city travel — bus around 240–670 THB, or fuel cost if driving
- Food — Sukhothai noodles from 45–60 THB per bowl; most meals well under 150 THB per person
Honest Note
Both cities are relaxed and easy to explore at your own pace. That said, key sights sit outside the town centres (the historical park is 12 km out, Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is 18 km out). Without your own vehicle, budget extra time and factor in songthaew or taxi fares for those legs.
