Sukhothai–Phrae Road Trip
3 Days 2 Nights

Sukhothai and Phrae sit on the same road north — and that connection gets overlooked far too often. Drive Highway 101 through Si Satchanalai and Den Chai, and you land in Phrae: a city built on teak, known for indigo-dyed cloth, and still genuinely quiet. This plan gives you half a day in Sukhothai's ruins, a midway stop at Si Satchanalai, then two easy days in Phrae without rushing — temples, a century-old mansion district, and the kind of northern food that doesn't cost much.

Sukhothai–Phrae Road Trip 3 Days 2 Nights

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Sukhothai to Phrae is about 159 km — roughly 2.5 hours driving straight through. The real draw is what's along the way, especially Si Satchanalai Historical Park, which sits right on Highway 101. You dip in, then continue through Den Chai into Phrae without retracing a single kilometer.

Why pair Sukhothai and Phrae

These two cities tell stories from different eras that actually complement each other well. Sukhothai was the capital of the first major Thai kingdom; Phrae was a prosperous Lanna city that grew wealthy on teak timber, leaving behind mansion estates and old wooden temples. Most people visit Sukhothai and head straight home, even though Phrae is only two hours further north. It's still one of the least-crowded historic towns in northern Thailand — you can walk the old city streets without fighting for space or a decent photo.

  • One road, no backtracking — Highway 101 runs from Sukhothai through Si Satchanalai, Den Chai, and straight into Phrae.
  • Two completely different atmospheres — Sukhothai is open-air ruins in the plains; Phrae is a living Lanna town with teak architecture.
  • Phrae is still genuinely quiet — fewer tourists means walkable streets, affordable food, and lodging that doesn't need booking weeks ahead.

Getting there: you need a car

This route is best driven — either your own vehicle or a rental. There's no direct public transport between Sukhothai and Phrae; the alternative is connecting through Phitsanulok, which takes most of a day. If you're flying in, land at Phitsanulok and rent a car there, or rent from Sukhothai city.

Food you shouldn't miss along this route

  • Khao bip / Sukhothai noodles — eat these in Sukhothai before you leave. Light, slightly sweet broth with sliced long beans.
  • Phrae khanom jeen nam sai — the city's breakfast staple, rice noodles in a clear pork bone broth with a soft, rounded flavor.
  • Khao soi and nam ngiao — northern Thai classics that Phrae does well, at very reasonable prices.
  • Teak-house cafés in Phrae — specialty coffee in old wooden buildings, quiet atmosphere, good for a slow afternoon.

Adjusting the plan

Only have 2 days? Drop Day 3 and do Phae Mueang Phi as a morning stop before driving back. If you have more time, Phrae connects naturally to Nan — they're on the same road and Nan is worth a trip in its own right.

How to split your accommodation

This plan is built around 2 nights in Phrae, since that's the destination you want to spend proper time in. If you'd rather not rush Sukhothai on the first morning, add one night there before driving north — you'll arrive in Phrae more relaxed. Either way, stay in or close to the old walled city in both towns; that's where the temples, mansions, and food are, and you won't need to move the car much.

Recommended

Stay inside Phrae old town

Walk to Pratu Chai, Wat Phrabat, Khum Chao Luang, and cafés without needing the car. Best for unhurried exploring.

Alternative

One night in Sukhothai first

Good option if you want a full morning at the historical park before driving north to Phrae the next day.
