Surat Thani 2 Days 1 Night
Cheow Lan Lake Raft Stay in Khao Sok

If you only have one weekend but want a view that sticks with you, Cheow Lan Lake and a night on a floating raft inside Khao Sok National Park is what a lot of people put at the very top of the list. Sharp limestone karsts rising out of emerald-green water have earned it the nickname Thailand's Guilin. We've put together a 2-day 1-night plan you can act on straight away — the route, the timing, and the real 2026 prices. We'll be honest about what's worth it and what to brace yourself for.

Surat Thani 2 Days 1 Night Cheow Lan Lake Raft Stay in Khao Sok

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Cheow Lan Lake, officially named Ratchaprapha Dam, sits in Ban Ta Khun district about 78 km from Surat Thani city — roughly an hour and a half by car. The lake lies inside Khao Sok National Park, and where people stay overnight is on privately run rafts floating in the middle of the water. You reach them by longtail boat from the pier, and how far depends on the raft: some are 30 minutes out, while others like 500 Rai are as far as an hour and a half.

The appeal here is the kind of quiet that cuts you off from the world, because out in the middle of the lake there is no phone signal at all. Most of the electricity comes from a generator that runs only during set hours. Anyone who genuinely wants to switch off will love it, but if you can't put your phone down, you'll want to make your peace with that first.

The 2-day 1-night plan at a glance

This plan is built for anyone starting from Surat Thani city or Surat Thani airport: leave early on day one, sleep on the raft for one night, then head back on the evening of day two. If you fly into Don Sak or arrive by train, you can shift the timing a little. The key thing is getting to the pier before noon so you catch the boat out to the raft and the afternoon lake cruise.

  • Day 1 — Surat Thani city → Cheow Lan pier → check in to the raft → cruise to the Three Brothers Peaks → kayaking → overnight on the raft
  • Day 2 — wake to the morning mist → jungle trek/cave (depending on the schedule) → boat back to the pier → lunch in Ban Ta Khun → drive back to the city
  • Rough budget — raft-stay packages start around 1,800–2,500 THB per person, including boat, meals and activities; luxury rafts like 500 Rai start from 6,000 THB and up
  • National park fee — for the Cheow Lan Lake zone, a Thai adult pays around 100 THB (foreigners 300 THB), paid at the visitor centre by the pier

Book ahead — it's worth it

In high season (Nov–Apr) the popular rafts fill up fast, especially over long weekends, so book at least 2–4 weeks ahead. Most rafts take bookings by phone/Line directly, since they're out on the water with no walk-in office.

Day 1 — Onto the raft, out on the lake, and Thailand's Guilin

Day 1

Surat Thani city → pier → raft stay

07:30
Leave Surat Thani cityTake Highway 401 toward Ban Ta Khun, about 78 km — drive yourself or hire a van. Grab some snacks and water on the way, since food on the raft is limited.
09:00
Arrive at Ban Chiao Lan municipal tourist pierPay the park fee at the visitor centre and photograph the Ratchaprapha Dam wall before boarding. There's a coffee shop and toilets to get yourself ready.
09:30
Board the longtail boat into the lakeIf you're on a package, the boat stops at viewpoints along the way. Chartering a boat starts around 1,400–2,000 THB per boat (seats several people), or about 450 THB and up per head on a join-in tour.
10:30
See the Three Brothers Peaks, the lake's signature shotThree limestone peaks lined up at Somdet Bay — this is the 'Thailand's Guilin' view you see on postcards. The morning light is the prettiest.
12:00
Reach the raft, check in, eat lunchMost rafts include lunch in the package. Settle in and dangle your feet in the water right off your room — it's clear and just cool enough.
14:30
Kayaking / afternoon scenic cruisePlenty of rafts have free kayaks — paddle quietly along the limestone cliffs. If you want a jungle-cave trek, check the schedule with the raft, as some activities run the next morning.
18:00
Sunset and dinner on the raftThe evening is very quiet as the sky changes colour over the lake. Dinner is usually bold southern dishes — lake fish, stir-fried vegetables.
20:00
Sleep to the sound of the forest, off the gridThe generator usually shuts off around 9–10 pm, and after that it's pitch dark and dead silent. On a clear night the sky fills with stars.

Pack the right gear

Bring a power bank (the power goes off on a schedule), a flashlight, mosquito repellent, closed-toe shoes for the trek, and a light jacket — out on the water at night the breeze is cooler than you'd expect.

Day 2 — Morning mist, a trek, then home

Day 2

Morning on the raft → activities → back to the city

06:00
Wake to the morning mistThe prettiest part of the trip — mist drifting over the peaks above the water. Sit out front of your room, or paddle a kayak out somewhere quiet.
07:30
Breakfast on the raftRice porridge, coffee, fried eggs — simple stuff, eaten with a mountain view.
08:30
Jungle trek / cave exploring (by schedule and season)Popular options are Coral Cave (about a 45-minute trek) or Nam Talu Cave, which needs a 2.5 km trek and wading through water inside the cave — in the rainy season Nam Talu Cave closes because the water runs high. A guide is required on every route.
11:30
Pack up, check out, boat back to the pierMost check-outs are at noon. The boat takes you back, stopping for any photos you missed yesterday.
12:30
Lunch around Ban Ta KhunOut from the pier there are made-to-order spots and roadside southern restaurants. Order fish-organ curry (kaeng tai pla) and stir-fried stink beans with prawns to close the trip on real southern flavour.
14:00
Drive back to Surat Thani cityYou'll reach the city around half past three — in time to stop at a café by the Tapi River or pick up some souvenirs before heading home.

Which raft to pick — by style and budget

Cheow Lan Lake has dozens of private rafts, from simple, no-frills places costing a few hundred baht to luxury floating resorts. Choose by your budget and how long a boat ride you're willing to sit through. These are the rafts people mention most and that are genuinely taking guests in 2026.

1

500 Rai Floating Resort

18 rooms · ~1.5 hr by boat · Tel 077-953013

The most luxurious raft in Cheow Lan lore — air-conditioned rooms, en-suite bathrooms, a swimming pool, a spa, and an open view from every room. It's the deepest in, about an hour and a half by boat, and you trade that distance for real privacy and a view that fills your eyes.

Nang Phrai Raft

Few-hundred-baht rates · 2D1N package · mid-distance boat ride

A familiar name to Cheow Lan regulars — friendly prices, a million-dollar view, and a spot where tour boats often stop to show the fish in the floating pens. The vibe is homely and warm, a good fit for a mid-range budget.

The Laguna Cheow Lan

Straight talk

Most of the few-hundred-baht rafts have fan rooms, shared bathrooms, and power that goes off when the generator does. If you're expecting hotel-level comfort, go for a resort-grade raft like 500 Rai or The Laguna. But if you're here for the atmosphere on a budget, the cheaper rafts are more than worth the price.

How to get there

Flexible

Drive yourself

The most flexible option. From Surat Thani city take Highway 401 to Ban Ta Khun, then turn onto Route SR.3062 for another 13 km to the dam. There's parking at the pier.

No driving

Hired van / package transfer

Plenty of rafts and tour companies offer transfers from the airport or the city, which is convenient if you're in a group. It's about an hour and a half to the pier.

Budget route

Public van + onward ride

Take a Surat Thani–Khao Sok/Takua Pa van, get off at Ban Ta Khun, then catch a local ride into the dam. The budget route, but leave plenty of time and coordinate carefully with the raft.

When to go

The best window is November to April — clear skies, still water, all the caves open, and pretty morning mist. The rainy season (May–Oct) leaves the lake a deeper green and quieter, but it rains often and the Nam Talu Cave activity usually closes because the water runs high. If you come in the rainy season, focus on cruising and kayaking, and brace yourself for the weather.

Allow for boat delays

In early 2026 there were reports of boat queues and not enough boats during peak times. If you're coming on a long weekend, confirm your boat slot with the raft again before setting off, and get to the pier early so you don't miss your turn.

FAQ

How much does a Cheow Lan Lake raft stay cost per person?

A standard 2-day 1-night raft-stay package starts around 1,800–2,500 THB per person, including the boat, meals and basic activities. For a luxury raft like 500 Rai, packages start from around 6,000 THB and up. That doesn't include the national park fee of about 100 THB for Thais.

Is there phone signal and electricity on the raft?

Out in the middle of the lake there is no phone signal at all. Electricity comes from a generator that runs during set hours and usually shuts off around 9–10 pm, so bring a power bank and a flashlight.

How far is the Cheow Lan pier from Surat Thani city?

About 78 km, roughly an hour and a half by car. Take Highway 401 to Ban Ta Khun district, then turn onto rural route SR.3062 for about another 13 km to the pier.

What time should I arrive at the pier?

Aim to arrive before noon so you catch the boat out to the raft and the afternoon lake cruise. On long weekends it's even better to come early, since boat queues are long and there may not be enough boats.

Can you visit Cheow Lan in the rainy season?

Yes. The lake is still beautiful and quieter than high season, but it rains often and the Nam Talu Cave activity usually closes because the water inside runs high. Focus on scenic cruising and kayaking, and allow for the weather.
