Surat Thani in 3 Days
Khao Sok + Chaiya + City

Plenty of people land in Surat Thani and hop straight onto a ferry to Koh Samui, never seeing what the mainland has to offer. The truth is, Surat Thani is a great trip even if you never touch the sea. This 3-day, 2-night plan runs a line from the Khao Sok rainforest and Cheow Lan Lake, over to the old town of Chaiya to pay respects at Phra Borommathat, then wraps up in the city along the Tapi River. We've paced it so it never feels rushed, with rough prices we're actually seeing right now.

Surat Thani in 3 Days Khao Sok + Chaiya + City

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Surat Thani is huge. From the city it's about an hour and a half to two hours out to Khao Sok, while Chaiya sits roughly 50 km north of town. So this plan is sequenced to avoid backtracking: push out to Khao Sok, the farthest point, on day one, then catch Chaiya on the way back before rolling into the city to finish. The easiest way to get around is to rent a car and drive yourself, but if you don't have wheels you can hire a van by the day or join a Cheow Lan group tour.

Before you set off

If you're set on an overnight raft stay at Cheow Lan, book at least 2–3 weeks ahead, especially over long weekends — the good rafts fill up fast, and the car bringing you to the pier needs a pickup time arranged with the raft in advance.

Day 1 — Out to Khao Sok, overnight on a Cheow Lan raft

Day one is the highlight of the trip. Leave town early to make the afternoon boat. If you're coming from Surat Thani Airport or the railway station (which is in Phunphin district), you can head straight to Khao Sok without going into the city at all.

Day 1

Khao Sok – Cheow Lan Lake

07:30
Leave Surat Thani city, heading for Khao SokAbout 100 km, roughly 1.5–2 hrs along Route 401. Fill up and grab some snacks before entering the park area.
09:30
Reach Khao Sok National Park, wander around before the boatPark entry for Thai visitors is 100 THB for adults, 50 THB for kids. There are cafes and roadside restaurants here to refuel.
11:00
Drive to Ratchaprapha Dam pier (Ban Cheow Lan pier)About 1 hr from Khao Sok proper to the pier. Most rafts arrange pickup here.
12:30
Board a longtail boat to the raft, taking in the 'Guilin of Thailand' viewsLimestone peaks rising out of emerald-green water — this is the shot everyone comes for. The boat ride in to the raft is about 1 hr.
14:00
Check in to the raft, have lunch, dangle your feet in the waterPark rafts (Nang Phrai / Klong Ka / Ton Toei / Kraisorn) are the cheapest. Private rafts come in several tiers; a 2-day, 1-night package with boat, meals and activities starts around 2,500–3,600 THB per person.
16:00
Kayak, or take a boat to the Khao Sam Kler viewpointKhao Sam Kler is three peaks lined up in a row, the signature photo spot on the reservoir. Some rafts also run jungle treks or trips out to caves.
18:30
Dinner on the raft, sunset behind the mountainsAt night there's almost no phone signal — come ready to sleep to the sound of the forest and water. It's about the best night's sleep you'll find anywhere.

Day 2 — Morning in the forest, afternoon down to Chaiya

The second morning is still on the reservoir, soaking up the early mist, which is far prettier than the midday view, before taking the boat back to shore. On the way back we don't drive straight into the city — we turn off to Chaiya first to visit Phra Borommathat and pick up genuine salted eggs from Lemet.

Day 2

Cheow Lan → Chaiya → into the city

06:30
Wake to the morning mist on the reservoir, photograph the sea of fog over the waterSome rafts run an early boat trip to see the mist around 5:30 am — the calmest air and the best light of the day.
08:00
Breakfast on the raft, pack upCheckout is usually around 9–10 am; leave time for the boat ride back to the pier.
10:00
Boat back to the pier, collect the car, leave Khao SokFrom Khao Sok to Chaiya is about 90–100 km, roughly 1.5 hrs. There are southern-style curry-and-rice spots to stop at along the way.
12:30
Arrive in Chaiya, lunch on bold southern curry and riceChaiya is an old town with plenty of local food. Try khao yam (rice salad) or an authentic gaeng tai pla (fish-innard curry).
13:30
Visit Phra Borommathat at Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya RatchaworawihanA first-class royal temple with a Srivijaya-style chedi over a thousand years old, the spiritual heart of the town. Open roughly 08:00–16:00. Dress modestly.
14:30
Stop at Suan Mokkh (Wat Than Nam Lai)The meditation center founded by Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, with its 'Spiritual Theatre' and curved stone court. A quiet place to walk and take in the atmosphere, about 6 km from Phra Borommathat.
15:30
Buy Chaiya salted eggs at the Lemet communityChaiya salted eggs are famous for their rich, sandy-textured yolks. The Lemet community is the traditional source — a great souvenir, and only a few baht per egg.
17:00
Drive back into Surat Thani city, check in to your hotelAbout 50 km, roughly 50 minutes, from Chaiya into the city. Rest up before heading out for dinner.
18:30
Eat your way around Talat San ChaoThe city's well-known evening street-food market, open from around 3 pm to 9:30 pm. Loads of food, and easy on the wallet.

Day 3 — The city and the Tapi River

The last day doesn't need to take you far — just the city itself, which a lot of people overlook. Surat Thani has an old-town quarter, cafes along the Tapi River, and the City Pillar Shrine. You can cover it all in half a day before moving on or catching a ferry to the islands.

Day 3

In the city – the Tapi River

08:00
Breakfast Surat Thani style: khanom jeen with southern curryKhanom jeen with rich southern nam ya curry is a local breakfast favorite. Several well-known shops are around Talat San Chao and in the city.
09:30
Visit the Surat Thani City Pillar ShrineRight in the center of town, with handsome architecture and a calm atmosphere — a good place to start a walk through the old town.
10:30
Stroll the old town, photograph the old buildingsRows of old prewar shophouses still stand here, with a retro feel. Wander at your own pace and you'll come away with some nice shots.
11:30
Sit at a cafe along the Tapi RiverThere are several riverside cafes where you can watch the boats and the current, with both indoor and outdoor seating — a good spot to rest before moving on.
12:30
Farewell lunch: seafood or southern foodSurat Thani sits on Bandon Bay, so the seafood is good and fresh — especially the rack-grown oysters. A fine last meal.
14:00
Move on — to the airport/railway station, or a ferry to the islandsIf you're heading on to Samui, Phangan or Tao, Donsak pier is about 1 hr from the city, so leave yourself enough time.

Rough budget per person

  • Khao Sok park entry — ฿100 for Thai adults, ฿50 for kids
  • Car rental / van hire — a sedan runs about ฿1,200–1,500/day, or hiring a van to the pier is about ฿1,500–2,000/trip
  • City hotel for night 2 — well-located city hotels start around ฿600–1,200/night
  • Food for 3 days — southern food is reasonably priced; budget around ฿800–1,200, including salted-egg souvenirs

Straight talk

Raft and tour prices swing with the season and with promotions. The figures here are the ranges we're actually seeing right now — double-check with the operator before booking. And if you go in the rainy season (May–Nov), the reservoir is greener but it rains often, so pack a rain jacket.

Tweak the plan to your style

Adjustable

Full-on nature

Add a second night on the raft, do a longer jungle trek or kayak trip, and cut back on city time. Great for serious forest lovers.

Adjustable

Temples & old town

Give Chaiya more time, visit Suan Mokkh in the quiet early morning, and add the Chaiya museum too.

Extend the trip

On to the islands

FAQ

Can I do a 3-day, 2-night Surat Thani trip without going to the sea?

Absolutely. This plan sticks entirely to the mainland: one night at Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake, the old town of Chaiya, and the city along the Tapi River — no island ferries at all. It's ideal if you want to see the side of Surat Thani that many people overlook.

How much does an overnight raft stay at Cheow Lan cost?

A 2-day, 1-night package with boat, meals and basic activities starts around 2,500–3,600 THB per person. Park rafts (Nang Phrai, Klong Ka, Ton Toei, Kraisorn) are cheaper than private ones. Prices move with the season and promotions, so check with the operator before booking.

Is it worth doing Khao Sok and Chaiya in the same trip?

Yes — they're on the same route north of the city. Push out to Khao Sok, the farthest point, on the way out, then catch Chaiya on the way back to visit Phra Borommathat and buy Lemet salted eggs before rolling into the city. No backtracking required.

Where do I buy genuine Chaiya salted eggs?

The Lemet community in Chaiya district is the traditional source, famous for rich, sandy-textured yolks. Buying straight from the community gets you a better price and fresher eggs than picking them up along the highway.

When is the best time to visit Khao Sok?

The dry season (Dec–Apr) has little rain and easy travel. The rainy season (May–Nov) gives you deeper green water in the reservoir and lush, damp forest, but it rains often — so pack a rain jacket and check the forecast before you go.
