Surat Thani town (locals call it Ban Don) sits along the Tapi River just before it opens into Ban Don Bay. It's an old trading port that still has its rows of old shophouses, Chinese shrines, and a fresh market that buzzes every morning. You can do almost all of this plan within a radius of a few kilometers — songthaews (red trucks), motorbike taxis, or a rented motorbike all make it easy. It's a good fit for anyone arriving before or after an island trip who wants to give the town a proper 2 days.
Before you set out
Many cafes in town close on a weekday mid-week (Tuesday or Wednesday are the common ones), the Narit Bridge walking street runs only on Saturdays, and the Ban Don floating market is a Sunday evening thing. If you want to catch both the cafes and the riverside markets, planning a trip across Saturday–Sunday works out best.
Day 1 — Old-Town Cafes + Evening on the Tapi
Day one is about getting to know the town. Start with a southern-style breakfast, then work your way through the house-roasting cafes around the old market quarter, before finishing the day with the riverside atmosphere along the Tapi at sunset.

About closing days
Rocket, Doz, and several other cafes in town take their weekly day off on different days. A quick check of each shop's page before you leave your hotel saves a wasted trip. If one is closed, the same area still has Square Coffee, Tree Space, and Kafae Ban Pu to swap in.
Book the activities in your Surat Thani trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 2 — Lamphu Island · City Pillar Shrine · Walking Street
Day two starts at the river-island park in the morning for the good air, with a stop to pay respects at the Srivijaya-style city pillar shrine, picks up any cafes you haven't reached, and wraps up at the riverside walking street in the evening (plan it for a Saturday to get the full set).

If you're not here on a Saturday
The Narit Bridge walking street is Saturdays only, and the Ban Don floating market is Sunday evenings. If your trip lands on a weekday, switch dinner to the riverside at Brown Sugar, or walk the shrine market / the 100-year-old Saphan Khong (Arched Bridge) market, which opens in the evening instead.
Cafes Worth a Stop in Town (Ordered by Buzz)
The plan above slots in cafes to match your walking pace, but Surat Thani town has plenty more house-roasting spots than that. Here are the ones locals and reviews mention most often, in case you want to swap based on closing days or your own taste.
Rocket Coffee Roastery & Baking
A house-roasting favorite with the town's younger crowd, semi-minimal loft style. Signature drinks are orange coffee and matcha, with bakery and truffle pizza too.
Doz Coffee Lab
Specialty leaning, roasting its own beans in-house, with a compact setting near the central intersection. Coffee people like it (closed Wednesdays).
Sipster Roaster
Down a deep lane, calm and quiet. Standout drinks are sparkling coffee and pumpkin coffee, with cake to pair — good for working.
Tree Space Cafe
A pour-over and specialty cafe in the Si Ket area, with croissants and signature drinks in an airy space (closed Wednesdays).
Square Coffee and Space
Opens early at seven, ideal for early risers. Matcha and signature coffee drinks, with cakes to choose from.
Good Cafe' Surat Thani
Below the Blu Monkey Hotel, opens early with plenty of bakery and donuts — a good stop before or after the Lamphu Island park walk.
Backyard Cafe X TCT
A cafe in a lane near the river, with ice cream, prettily plated sweets, and a cactus corner for photos. Afternoons draw a chilled crowd.
Brown Sugar Cafe & Bistro
Right on the Tapi River, both cafe and bistro, with Thai food, coffee, cake, and alcoholic drinks. You can settle in late into the night.
Le Viridian HoTown & Cafe
A central-town cafe leaning European bakery, with house-made drinks and baked goods (closed Tuesdays).
Kafae Ban Pu
A white-toned minimalist spot in town, open daily, with plenty of bakery — an easy drop-in with no closing-day gamble.
Cafe-hopper tips
House-roasting cafes in a small town often have limited tables, and weekend afternoons get crowded. If you want a good seat, go before 1 pm — and don't set out to hit every shop. Picking about 2 cafes a day and settling in properly is more fun.
Markets and Riverside Spots Not to Miss
- Narit Bridge walking street (Saturdays 16:00–22:00) — along the Tapi River, with loads of food (fried, grilled, sweets) and OTOP souvenirs. It's the town's evening-market highlight.
- Ban Don floating market (Sunday evenings) — a worth-seeing market on the Tapi River near the city pillar shrine, with a riverside atmosphere and local eats.
- Lamphu Island public park — an island in the middle of the Tapi River, free entry, open 04:00–22:00, with walking and cycling paths along the water. Mornings and evenings have the best air.
- Ban Don fresh market — a morning market in the heart of town with old-school coffee, dim sum, pa thong ko, and fresh seafood. It's where locals eat breakfast.
- City pillar shrine + old market quarter — Srivijaya-style art near the river, with old shophouses and Chinese shrines to walk on to.
Getting Around Town and Where to Stay
Ban Don town is small and walkable — most spots in this plan are within a radius of a few kilometers. Songthaews (red trucks) run around town, and motorbike taxis are easy to flag. If you want more freedom, renting a motorbike by the day is the easiest option. For where to stay, pick an area near the Ban Don market or the Tapi riverfront so you can easily walk into the cafes and markets. Surat Thani Airport is about 25 km outside town, roughly a 30–40 minute drive in.
