This trip suits anyone who'd rather wander and shoot photos of old buildings, linger over coffee, and close out the day at the beach — rather than pack in as many sights as possible. We've structured Day 1 for the Takua Pa old town, Day 2 for Khao Lak's beaches and sea-view cafes, and Day 3 for a relaxed wrap-up before heading home. For the best experience, try to time your visit so Day 1 falls on a Sunday — the Sunday evening walking street (Thanon Sai Watthanatham) runs from around 15:00–20:00 and is worth catching.
Before You Go
- Getting here — The closest airport is Phuket. Khao Lak is about 1.5 hrs by car; Takua Pa is around 2 hrs. Renting your own car is strongly recommended — the attractions are spread out and there's no reliable public transport between them.
- Takua Pa to Khao Lak — About 36 km via Highway 4, roughly 35–40 min. Close enough to easily combine in one trip.
- Best time to visit — Nov–Apr: clear skies, calm sea, good for swimming. Rainy season (May–Oct): Takua Pa old town and its cafes are fine year-round, but Khao Lak seas get rough — always check the beach flag before entering the water.
- Cafe closures — Many old-town cafes close on certain weekdays. Check the shop's social page before making a special trip.

Day 1
Sri Takua Pa Road · Sino-Portuguese Shophouses · Heritage Cafes
09:00
Start at Sri Takua Pa Road and walk the Sino-Portuguese shophousesThese tin-era buildings are remarkably well-preserved. Street murals depicting local history dot the walls of several buildings — worth slowing down to read as you walk.
10:30
Stop at Kopi Kuapa for coffee in a 100-year-old shophouseA cafe inside an authentic ~100-year-old Sino-style house. Opens around 09:00–20:00. They serve local sweets alongside the coffee — worth trying.
12:00
Lunch in the old townAlong Sri Takua Pa Road you'll find local restaurants and old-school kopitiam shops. Look for Hokkien noodles or Phang Nga-style rice noodles at a busy table — packed places are usually the right call.
13:30
Visit Xin Cai Deng Shrine (Kuan Yu Chinese Temple)A Chinese temple around 170 years old — the main shrine of the neighborhood. Open approximately 06:00–18:00. If you happen to visit during the Vegetarian Festival, the atmosphere is lively.
15:00
Settle into another cafe, or browse the Sunday walking street if the timing worksThe Thanon Sai Watthanatham cultural walking street runs Sunday evenings around 15:00–20:00 with local food and handicrafts. On other days, try Krisanawari Specialty Coffee — they do a tamarind coffee worth checking out (closed Tuesdays).
18:00
Check into accommodation in Takua Pa town, or drive to Khao Lak to sleepIf you want to get the most out of the old town, stay one night in Takua Pa and move to Khao Lak the next morning.
Photography tip
The shophouses photograph best before 10:00 — the light is softer and there are fewer people around. Come later in the day and the west-facing facades will be backlit, which makes getting a clean shot much harder.
Day 2 — Khao Lak: Beach, Tsunami Memorial & Sea-View Cafes
Day 2
Police Boat 813 Memorial · Bang Niang Beach · Beachside Cafes
09:00
Drive from Takua Pa down to Khao Lak (about 35–40 min)Highway 4 is an easy road. You'll pass through small communities and rubber plantations along the way.
10:00
Visit the 2004 Tsunami Memorial — Police Boat 813A ~60-ton patrol vessel carried roughly 2 km inland by the 2004 tsunami wave and preserved as a memorial. Entry is free. A sobering and worthwhile stop for understanding what happened here.
11:30
Walk Bang Niang Beach, Khao LakA long, sandy beach that's much quieter than Phuket. Great for a stroll or just sitting. If the water looks calm, you can swim — always check the beach flag first.
12:30
Seafood lunch at a beachside restaurantKhao Lak has several seafood spots along the beach. Fresh prawns, crab, and fish priced by weight. Go with what looks freshest that day.
14:30
Afternoon coffee at a sea-view cafeOptions include The Deli Cafe on the beachfront at Eden Beach Resort, or Waankarn in town — a loft-style spot open around 10:00–22:00. Drinks start around THB 90–140.
17:30
Watch the sunset from the beachThe Andaman coast faces west, and Khao Lak beach lines up perfectly. A good way to close the day.
Day 3 — Wrap Up Before Heading Home
Day 3
Morning Market · One Last Cafe · Souvenirs
08:00
Morning market — coffee and pa thong ko (Chinese doughnuts)Both Takua Pa and Khao Lak have old-school kopitiam spots open early. Pull up a plastic stool, order thick southern-style coffee and kaya toast — a proper southern Thai breakfast.
09:30
One last cafe stop depending on where you're stayingOld-town loyalists can head back to a favourite spot in Takua Pa; beach people can find a final sea-view cafe in Khao Lak. Depends where you slept last night.
11:00
Pick up souvenirs before leavingPopular Phang Nga souvenirs include cashew nuts, dried shrimp skewer paste, and local sweets. Available at markets and souvenir shops in town.
12:30
Drive back to Phuket AirportAllow about 1.5 hrs from Khao Lak, around 2 hrs from Takua Pa. Add extra time for check-in.
Flexible plan
Only have 2 days? Do the old town in the morning of Day 1, then drive down to Khao Lak in the afternoon. Got more time? You can extend the trip with a Similan or Surin Islands dive tour from Khao Lak — these typically run Nov–May when conditions allow.
