Before we get into the plan, it helps to understand why Udon is such a Vietnamese-food town. Back during the Indochina wars, Vietnamese migrants settled across the upper Isan region, especially Udon, Nong Khai, and Nakhon Phanom. That's how nam neung (grilled pork rolls), Vietnamese noodle soup, Vietnamese savory crepes, and fresh spring rolls became local staples you rarely find done this way elsewhere. Several shops even hold a Michelin Bib Gourmand. So this plan puts Vietnamese food front and center, then rounds out the day with cafes and night markets.
Udon's Vietnamese Food — Shops Worth Trying
If you only have room for a few meals, start with this group. We've ordered them by how each shop stands out and which meal it suits best, beginning with the name Udon locals bring up most often.
VT Nam Neung (Pho Si branch)
Udon's most famous name, shipping delivery nationwide and so popular that people from out of province still order it. The nam neung comes as a big set: tender grilled pork and a pile of fresh herbs that you wrap yourself with rice paper and the shop's own dipping sauce. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The Pho Si branch sits behind Wat Phothisomphon with plenty of seating.
Arunee Nam Neung
An old-timer that's been part of the city for over three decades, across from Thung Si Muang near the former Vista cinema. It also holds a Bib Gourmand, and plenty of locals rate its flavor as the truly original one. Fragrant grilled pork, loads of fresh herbs, and an easy downtown spot to eat your way through.
Standout Vietnamese Noodle Soup in Town
Vietnamese noodle soup uses round noodles in a clear pork-bone broth — light but well balanced, with minced pork, a soft-boiled egg, and Vietnamese pork sausage. It's a completely different animal from the thick-broth noodle soup of central Thailand. Several spots in town give you generous portions, making it a great warming breakfast.
Bunsiri — Vietnamese Noodle Soup & Vietnamese Bread
A Vietnamese-style breakfast spot that gathers all the morning favorites in one place: Vietnamese noodle soup, Vietnamese bread, and pan eggs. Great to open the day before heading out. The Vietnamese bread is crisp outside, soft inside, and pairs perfectly with the pan eggs.
VT Nam Neung (Si Yaek Ban Chan branch)
A branch on the Udon–Khon Kaen stretch of Mittraphap Road with a drive-thru, so you can order without leaving the car. Handy if you're passing through or want to grab some as a gift before you leave town. Same menu as the main branch.
Fresh Spring Rolls & Vietnamese Crepes
Vietnamese snacks worth ordering alongside your main meal. The fresh spring rolls wrap herbs, shrimp, and pork, served with peanut dipping sauce, while the Vietnamese crepe is a thin batter filled with bean sprouts and minced pork, folded in half and eaten hot. Find them at nam neung shops and markets.
Ănno Vietnamese Restaurant
A more contemporary Vietnamese spot than the old-timers, good for a relaxed sit-down meal. It has nam neung along with Vietnamese rice dishes and small plates, all plated nicely enough to photograph.
Pork Sausage & Nam Neung to Take Home
If you're heading home, Vietnamese pork sausage and nam neung are the gifts Udon locals actually buy. The pork sausage is firm and dense, good with sticky rice or cooked into other dishes. The well-known shops sell vacuum-packed versions that are easy to carry on a flight.
Getting your money's worth on Vietnamese
One nam neung set easily feeds 2–3 people, so if you're a small group, a half set or a single plate is plenty. And don't forget to add fresh spring rolls and a Vietnamese crepe — they're hard to find outside upper Isan.

Udon Cafes — A Break for Coffee People
Udon's cafe scene has grown a lot in the past few years, with downtown spots you can walk to easily and field-side cafes that take a bit of a drive but reward you with the view. We've split them so you can pick by the rhythm of your day — between lunch and dinner is the best window for a cafe stop.
Dose Factory
A serious coffee cafe with an industrial gray-and-black look — exposed steel framing like an old warehouse, good beans, and great if you like strong coffee and cool photo corners.
P.S. Coffee Bar
A loft cafe in the city center with both indoor and outdoor zones — every corner photographs well. Good for a stop while you're wandering downtown without driving far.
Little Ground Common Spaces
A minimalist cafe near Nong Bua park, in wood and earth tones, airy and easy. You can stroll along the water afterward, so it's good for a long sit in the late morning.
Kyoto Shi Cafe
A Japanese-style cafe that brings a Kyoto mood to Udon, with green tea and Japanese-style desserts. Good if you like a calm, quiet vibe.
Berry Chapel Cafe
A European-style cafe and restaurant in a building that looks like a small chapel, surrounded by gardens and flower fields. The mood is romantic — good for photos and a sit-down lunch. It's on the edge of town, so you'll need to drive out a bit.
154.7 Coffee Garden
A cafe set among the rice fields, a Thai-style house with green views and a natural feel. Good if you want to escape the city for a quiet, chilled-out sit, just a short drive out of town.
Picking a cafe to fit your plan
If you're mostly exploring downtown that day, go with Dose Factory or P.S. Coffee Bar so you don't waste time driving. But if you've set the day aside to drive around the outskirts, that's when a field-side cafe like 154.7 or Berry Chapel is worth the fuel.
Night Markets — Close the Day by Grazing
The most fun dinner in Udon is grazing through a market — lively atmosphere, a wide range of food, easy on the wallet. Try these three depending on the mood each night.
- UD Town — a shopping and dining hub next to the downtown train station, open roughly 10:00–22:00 with food zones and evening activities. The easiest to reach if you're staying in the city.
- D-Nae Market (in the UD Town plaza) — a chic evening market open roughly 15:00–22:00, with food, food trucks, secondhand goods, crafts, and live music. Good for a long evening stroll.
- Night markets around Thung Si Muang / municipal markets — authentic Isan street food: som tam, grilled chicken, pork skewers, and sweets, spread around the city center. Easy to continue on to right after the Vietnamese shops.
Market meal budget
A night-market meal runs about ฿80–150 per person and leaves you full. Try spreading small buys across several stalls so you get to taste more, rather than ordering one big plate from one shop.
The 2-Day Food & Cafe Plan
Here's the layout that works — eating-focused but not exhausting, with real time to sit at cafes. Adjust the spots to suit opening days and your own taste.

A few honest notes
Many field-side cafes require a car, so without your own vehicle you'll want to call a Grab or rent a motorbike. And some old-timer Vietnamese shops sell out before closing, so if you've got your eye on a particular one, go mid-morning rather than waiting for evening to be sure.
