Uthai Thani in 1 Day
Khao Sakae Krang–Wat Tha Sung–Riverside Old Town

Uthai Thani is a small town you can see in a single day without rushing. The town center sits on the Sakae Krang River, and the pretty temples and viewpoints are all close together — just a few minutes' drive apart. This plan starts early at the riverside market, climbs the hill for a temple and a view, moves on to the Glass Temple at Wat Tha Sung, and finishes with an evening stroll through the Trok Rong Ya old town. It's a short loop, so you never double back.

Uthai Thani in 1 Day Khao Sakae Krang–Wat Tha Sung–Riverside Old Town

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

If you only have one day in Uthai Thani, the good news is that the town's highlights are all clustered close together. The center is small enough to walk, while Wat Tha Sung and Khao Sakae Krang sit just a few kilometers out. We've ordered this plan around each place's real opening hours — especially the Glass Temple at Wat Tha Sung, which only opens in timed sessions. Get the order wrong and you could miss it, so we've locked in the timing for each part of the day.

This plan works best if you drive yourself or rent a car or motorbike in town, because public transport in Uthai Thani is limited and the sights are a little spread out. Having your own wheels makes everything far easier.

A full one-day timeline

Day 1

Morning market–hilltop–Glass Temple–old town

06:30
Sakae Krang riverside morning marketLocals set up their stalls before the sky even brightens, with fresh produce, vegetables, homemade snacks, and breakfast bites to graze on. It's the kind of small-town riverside scene you rarely catch elsewhere. Get up early and you'll catch it at its busiest.
07:30
Breakfast — Vietnamese kuay jab / Uthai-style noodlesThe town's signature dish is Vietnamese kuay jab, a clear broth packed with toppings, served with soy-braised chicken. The popular shops are scattered through the town center and around the market. Bowls start at about ฿40–60. Eat up before you head out.
08:30
Wat Uposatharam (Wat Bot) by the riverAn old temple on the bank of the Sakae Krang River, with aged murals and a scripture library built out in the middle of the water to keep termites from reaching the Buddhist canon. Wandering through quietly in the morning gives you the best atmosphere.
09:30
Climb Khao Sakae Krang to Wat Sangkat Rattana KhiriYou can go up two ways: the 449-step Naga staircase, or driving around via the sports stadium road. At the top there's a Buddha image and a bell, plus 360-degree views over Uthai Thani town and the winding Sakae Krang River. Come on a clear morning for the sharpest view.
11:00
Head to Wat Tha Sung (Wat Chantharam) for the morning Glass Temple sessionThe temple is open 08:00–16:00, but the 100-meter Glass Temple only opens in sessions: morning 09:00–11:30 and afternoon 14:00–16:00. If you want the morning session, hurry to arrive before 11:30. If you miss it, just come back for the afternoon round.
12:30
Lunch break near Wat Tha SungWhile you wait for the afternoon Glass Temple session, this is a good time to grab a meal nearby. There are made-to-order spots and roadside noodle shops around. Once you're full, the temple grounds are huge, so you can happily wander the rest of them.
14:00
See the 100-meter Glass Temple, afternoon sessionThe temple's highlight, clad in clear glass mirror throughout. Inside there's a large Buddha image and the preserved body of Luang Pho Ruesi Ling Dam. Dress modestly — no sleeveless tops or short pants and skirts — and bring a shawl just in case.
16:00
Back to town, rest at a riverside cafeHead back into town to catch your breath. Find a cafe on the Sakae Krang River, sip a coffee, and watch the late-afternoon light before the old-town stroll.
17:30
Stroll Trok Rong Ya, the riverside old townAn old wooden-house community that was once a Chinese quarter, open for walking until around 21:00. You'll find coffee shops, snacks, souvenirs, and old timber row houses to photograph for that retro feel — an easy, relaxed way to close out the day.

Timing tip

The Glass Temple at Wat Tha Sung sets the schedule for the whole day, since it only opens in 2 sessions. If you sleep in and miss the morning round (closes 11:30), flip the order: climb Khao Sakae Krang first, then come to Wat Tha Sung for the afternoon session (14:00–16:00) so you don't miss the highlight.

Short on time? Pick these 3 first

Not everyone has a full day. If you have to trim, we'd make sure you keep these 3 main stops, because they're the images of the town you won't find anywhere else.

1

100-meter Glass Temple, Wat Tha Sung

Timed sessions 09:00–11:30 and 14:00–16:00

A long hall clad entirely in glass mirror, the whole room sparkling. It's the picture people think of when they think of Uthai Thani before anything else. Don't forget to double-check the morning/afternoon session times.

Don't missDress modestly

Open daily, morning to evening

What to eat through the day

Uthai Thani food isn't flashy, but it's good in a homey way. The signature dishes are Vietnamese kuay jab and Sakae Krang River fish. Plan your meals like this and you'll eat your way through everything without wasting time.

  • Breakfast — Vietnamese kuay jab / noodles Eat near the morning market or in the town center. Clear broth, generous toppings, from ฿40–60.
  • Lunch — Sakae Krang River fish Several riverside restaurants serve sheatfish and giant gourami, fried or blanched with dipping sauce, in bold local flavors.
  • Snacks — Trok Rong Ya in the evening Local sweets, old-style coffee, and desserts to graze on as you walk, all at friendly prices.

Getting around and parking

Uthai Thani is about 200-plus kilometers from Bangkok, roughly 3.5 hours by car, or you can take a coach or minivan straight to the town center. But once you arrive, having your own vehicle is far more convenient, because the sights are spread out and public transport in town is limited.

Drive or walk up

Khao Sakae Krang

There's a parking lot at the top if you drive up, or park at the bottom and climb the 449 steps. Pick whichever suits your energy.

Large parking lot

Wat Tha Sung

The temple grounds are very large with a big parking lot, and there's a fair bit of walking inside. Wear comfortable shoes.

Walkable

Trok Rong Ya / old town

Right in the center of town — park on the street and walk around. The quarter is small and all within walking distance.

Dress the part

Today you'll visit several temples, so wear sleeved tops and knee-length pants or skirts, and carry a shoulder shawl. That way you can enter the Glass Temple and other temples comfortably with nothing to worry about.

FAQ

Is one day enough for Uthai Thani?

It's enough for the main sights. Uthai Thani town is small, and stops like Khao Sakae Krang, Wat Tha Sung, and Trok Rong Ya are close together, so you can comfortably see it all in a day. But if you want nature farther out, like Huai Kha Khaeng or Hup Pa Tat, plan for 2 days.

What time does the Glass Temple at Wat Tha Sung open?

Wat Tha Sung is open 08:00–16:00, while the 100-meter Glass Temple opens in sessions: morning 09:00–11:30 and afternoon 14:00–16:00. Plan your timing to make a session, and dress modestly — no sleeveless tops or short pants and skirts.

Do I have to climb the stairs at Khao Sakae Krang?

No. There are two ways up: the 449-step Naga staircase, or driving around via the sports stadium road and parking at the top. If you'd rather not walk, you can simply drive up. The top has 360-degree views over the town.

When is the best time to visit Trok Rong Ya?

You can walk it any time of day, but the best atmosphere is in the evening, when there's a walking street and shops open until around 21:00. It's a great way to end the day, grazing on local food and photographing the old wooden houses.

Do I need my own vehicle in Uthai Thani?

We'd recommend it, because public transport in town is limited and the sights are spread a little outside the center. Driving yourself or renting a car or motorbike makes it easier to get around and to plan your timing around the Glass Temple sessions.
