Short answer: For a first visit with the easiest transport, stay in Sukhumvit (Asok–Nana–Thong Lo) or Silom–Sathorn — both sit on the BTS/MRT so everything is easy, and both are the nightlife hubs. For temples and old-world charm pick the Old City (Rattanakosin/Khao San); for river views pick the Chao Phraya riverside.

FAQ

Where should I stay in Bangkok for a first visit?

Sukhumvit (Asok–Nana) or Silom — both are on the BTS/MRT for the easiest access to sights, with plenty of restaurants and nightlife in one area.

Where to stay near the Grand Palace and Khao San?

The Old City around Rattanakosin and Khao San Road is close to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, but it is not on the BTS — use the Chao Phraya express boat or a taxi.

Is staying by the Chao Phraya river worth it?

Worth it if you love river views and upscale hotels; many run shuttle boats to BTS Saphan Taksin. But for self-guided sightseeing, a station-side neighborhood is more convenient.
