Short answer: Nong Khai is a Mekong river town on the Laos border. The riverside around Tha Sadet is the best base — a waterfront market, guesthouses and lovely sunsets, all easy to stroll. For newer hotels or to cross into Vientiane, choose the Mittraphap Road / Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge area; the town center has restaurants and markets at friendly prices.

FAQ

Where should I stay in Nong Khai?

The Mekong riverside around Tha Sadet market is best — riverside strolls, sunsets and market shopping, with atmospheric guesthouses and small hotels. If you are crossing to Laos, stay near the Friendship Bridge.

How do I cross from Nong Khai to Vientiane?

Cross at the first Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, about 2 km from town, where shuttle buses run and immigration is handled at the border. Vientiane is around 20 km beyond on the Lao side, so staying near the bridge makes an early crossing easy.

What is there to do in Nong Khai?

It is known for the Mekong waterfront, Tha Sadet market, the surreal Sala Keoku sculpture park, riverside temples and naga lore. Many stop for one or two nights while touring the upper Isan or before crossing into Laos.
