Ban Krut & Bang Saphan
Quiet Beaches, a Hilltop Chedi, Koh Talu

Ban Krut and Bang Saphan sit at the far south of Prachuap Khiri Khan, almost two hours past Hua Hin, so far fewer people make it down here. You get a long, quiet stretch of sand, a golden chedi perched on a hill with the whole coastline in view, and Koh Talu, where you can still snorkel over real, healthy coral. This is the guide for anyone who wants to escape the packed beaches and find somewhere calmer.

Ban Krut & Bang Saphan Quiet Beaches, a Hilltop Chedi, Koh Talu

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

If Hua Hin is starting to feel too crowded for you, keep driving south through Prachuap. Ban Krut (in Bang Saphan district) and Bang Saphan Noi are a stretch of coast that's still quiet — kilometres of sandy beach, light traffic, and seafood restaurants right on the sand at fair prices. It suits people who'd rather fall asleep to the waves than hunt for the next photo spot. We've split it into three main areas to keep it simple: Ban Krut beach, the hilltop chedi, and Koh Talu.

Ban Krut Beach — a long, quiet shoreline as far as you can see

Ban Krut beach runs unbroken for several kilometres. The water isn't island-clear, but it's quiet and clean, with a line of pines and coconut palms all along the shore — perfect for a walk early or late in the day. The landmark people love to photograph is the white kilometre marker and red sign by the beach, while at the northern end you'll see the golden chedi standing out on the hill as a backdrop.

  • Best time to go — November to May, when the sea is calm and the sky is clear. During the rainy season (June–October) the waves pick up and it rains often.
  • Ao Bo Thonglang — a half-moon bay nearby with beachfront restaurants and cafés to sit and chill.
  • Pha Fang Daeng — a line of red earth cliffs running along the sea, a natural photo spot that's rare to find on the Gulf of Thailand side.

Tip

There's no public transport running around Ban Krut, so driving yourself or renting a car is by far the easiest way to get around. Petrol stations and convenience stores are much scarcer than in Hua Hin, so it's safer to fill up and stock up before you head to the beach.

Phra Mahathat Chedi Phakdi Prakat — a nine-spired chedi on Khao Thong Chai

This is the landmark most people picture first when they think of Ban Krut. The golden chedi sits on top of Khao Thong Chai hill, within the grounds of Wat Thang Sai. It was built to honour the late King Rama IX. The chedi has nine spires and incredibly detailed mirror-mosaic work, with a two-storey ordination hall, Buddha images, and murals inside. The spot people love most is the terrace in front of the chedi, looking down over the full length of Ban Krut beach and the open sea.

  • Opening hours — roughly 07:00–17:00 daily, free entry.
  • Dress code — it's a temple, so dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and take your shoes off before going up into the ordination hall.
  • Go in the morning — afternoons are harsh and very hot since it's exposed up on the hill. Early on, the light is nicer and you can photograph the sea view more clearly.
  • Parking available — there's a car park and a few small shops at the top, and you can drive right up to the chedi.

Koh Talu — snorkeling over coral that's still healthy

Koh Talu is in Bang Saphan Noi district (a bit further south of Ban Krut). The water is clear and the coral is still in good shape. Its signature feature is a rock arch you can take a boat through ("talu" means "to pass through"). The water is shallow and the waves are gentle, so even non-swimmers can snorkel with a life jacket. Most tours leave from Laem Son beach as a day trip from morning to midday, stopping at several spots to see coral, schools of fish, and sea anemones.
