Tropic City was Thailand's very first tropical bar, opened in 2017 inside an old house on Charoen Krung by two Swedish bartenders, Philip Stefanescu and Sebastian De La Cruz. The facade was a riot of painted leaves, scarlet flowers and oversized parrots, softened by neon pineapples and flamingos. Inside you found vintage sofas, wooden furniture, fresh orchids and a low hip-hop soundtrack, the whole thing feeling like a Caribbean beach house dropped into Soi Charoen Krung 28 in Bang Rak.
Rum was the heart of the place. More than 90 good bottles lined the shelves, and nearly every cocktail built on the sweet-sour lift of tropical fruit, Caribbean spice, a hint of Brazil and Thai ingredients. The team made their own infusions, reductions and tinctures, playing with fat-washing and clarifying to land flavours that were complex but still easy to drink. The two glasses people talked about most were the PB & Thai and the Bongo Dram, alongside sharing serves and a genuinely good non-alcoholic list.
That craft carried Tropic City onto Asia's 50 Best Bars every year from 2019, climbing as high as No.6 in Asia in 2023 and No.66 on the World's 50 Best Bars the same year, before landing at No.62 in Asia on the 2024 list. Sadly the bar closed its doors in April 2026. If you ever sipped a rum flight in that painted old house, you saw one of the rooms that laid the groundwork for Bangkok's whole tropical-cocktail scene.
