Short answer: For temples and old cities go to Ayutthaya; for nature and waterfalls, Kanchanaburi or Khao Yai; for floating markets, Amphawa (Samut Songkhram) or Ratchaburi (Damnoen Saduak); and for the nearest beach, Bang Saen (Chonburi). All are about 1–3 hours from Bangkok.
The picks, ranked
Ayutthaya
The old royal capital, full of ancient temples and stupas, about 1.5 hours from Bangkok by car or train — rent a bike or hop a tuk-tuk to see the ruins in a day.
Kanchanaburi
The River Kwai bridge, Erawan waterfall and river rafts, about 2–2.5 hours from Bangkok — doable in a day, though an overnight by the river is more rewarding.
Amphawa (Samut Songkhram)
The evening Amphawa floating market, firefly boat trips and the Maeklong railway market, about 1.5 hours from Bangkok — great for an afternoon-into-evening trip.
Bang Saen (Chonburi)
The closest beach to Bangkok, about 1.5–2 hours away — swim, sit in a deck chair and eat seafood on the sand, perfect for a one-day seaside escape.
Khao Yai
A national park with waterfalls and wildlife, plus vineyards and hill-view cafés, about 2.5–3 hours from Bangkok — nature without going far.
Ratchaburi
The Damnoen Saduak floating market, cave temples, dragon-jar pottery and the Suan Phueng cafés and resorts, about 1.5–2 hours from Bangkok.
