Short answer: Chiang Mai's best stretch is November to February — cool, dry, clear skies, perfect for walking the old city, climbing Doi Suthep, and visiting Doi Ang Khang. But late February through April is burning season across the north and neighboring countries — smoke settles into the basin the city sits in, pushing PM2.5 levels high for weeks at a time. On the worst days, Chiang Mai has ranked as the world's most polluted city. Mountain views turn hazy and it can affect anyone with respiratory issues — unless you're specifically coming for Songkran (April 13-15) around the old city moat.
Month-by-month
| Period | Weather | Haze/PM2.5 | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov-Jan | Cool, dry, clear | Low | Old city walks, mountains, flowers blooming |
| Feb | Warming up | Starting to rise | Still workable, check air quality first |
| Mar-Apr | Very hot | Peak (burning season) | Avoid unless coming for Songkran |
| May-Oct | Rain in bursts, lush green | Low (rain clears the air) | Fewer crowds, cheap, green rice terraces |
Burning season — what to know before booking
Late February through April is the region's agricultural and forest burning season across Northern Thailand. Unless you're coming specifically for Songkran, it's best to plan around this window — especially if you have respiratory issues or allergies. If you do need to visit during this period, check the air quality index (AQI) before planning each day's outdoor activities, and bring an N95 mask.
- Want clear skies — come November to January, when mountain flowers are also in bloom
- Want to avoid the haze — skip late February through April, unless you're specifically coming for mid-April Songkran
- On a budget, don't mind rain — come May to October; the rain actually clears the air, prices drop, and crowds thin out
