This trip works best if you have your own car or rent one and drive yourself, because the sights are spread far apart — the temples on Buriram's outskirts and the Phu Wiang dinosaurs out on the western side of Khon Kaen. The main route runs south to north: start in Buriram, then drive up to Khon Kaen so you never double back. Build in buffer time for the cooler hours and for food stops along the way, because Isan is a land of good eating.
How to get there
Driving yourself is the smoothest way to do this trip. You can reach Buriram by flying into Buriram Airport, taking the southern Isan railway line, or catching a coach from Mo Chit, then renting a car in town. Buriram and Khon Kaen are about 190 km apart, roughly a 3-hour drive. If you'd rather not drive, there are a few direct buses a day between the two cities, taking about 4 hours — but once you arrive, sights like Phanom Rung and Phu Wiang are both outside the city centres and awkward to reach by public transport. Renting a car at around 900–1,400 THB a day is the most worthwhile and flexible option.

The Buriram–Khon Kaen driving route
The two cities sit about 190 km apart, roughly a 3-hour drive with no stops. The main route leaves Buriram toward Nang Rong, into Nakhon Ratchasima, then takes the Mittraphap highway north to Khon Kaen — good roads with petrol stations and restaurants the whole way. A slightly shorter route runs through Phutthaisong and Ban Phai, heading straight north, but parts of it are two-lane and slower going. For a first trip, the route through Korat is the more reassuring choice. Fill the tank before you leave the city.
Book the activities in your Buriram trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Food in both cities you shouldn't miss
Stand-up meatballs, Buriram railway station
A Buriram institution sold behind the railway station for over 50 years. The meatballs are soft and springy, dipped in a tamarind sauce with shallots and fried dried chilli. Eating them standing up is part of the local culture, with several well-known stalls in a row to choose from. You can take some home as a souvenir too.
Famous Khon Kaen grilled chicken
Fragrant grilled chicken with crispy skin is a Khon Kaen signature, eaten with som tam and sticky rice as a full Isan set. Several spots in town are local regulars' favourites — inexpensive and great for a quick lunch.
Khon Kaen rice noodles (mee)
Khon Kaen's mee noodles are a provincial speciality — chewy, springy strands that stir-fry up wonderfully balanced. You can have them on a plate at a shop or buy the dried noodles to take home. It's a character you won't find quite the same anywhere else.
À la carte spots on the way up to Phanom Rung
Around the car park and the approach to Phanom Rung you'll find à la carte shops and local snacks. Order fried rice or noodles to refuel before continuing to Mueang Tam, without driving all the way back into town and wasting time.
Roadside som tam and grilled chicken near Phu Wiang
On the way back from the Phu Wiang dinosaurs there are roadside som tam and grilled-chicken stalls, pounded fresh and boldly seasoned, eaten with sticky rice. Cheap and cheerful, an easy lunch before heading into central Khon Kaen.
Mookata barbecue in town
The dinner where Isan friends gather. Both Buriram and Khon Kaen have plenty of all-you-can-eat mookata spots — filling, good value, and easy on the wallet, perfect for ending a full day of sightseeing.
Coffee cafés in Khon Kaen
As a university town, Khon Kaen has loads of cafés in every style, from downtown spots to ones out by the fields on the city edge. Sit out the afternoon heat, sip a coffee, and rest your legs — some places have photo corners and a bakery too.
Ban Khok Mueang community souvenirs
The area around Mueang Tam temple is the Ban Khok Mueang tourism community, selling woven cloth, organic rice, and local goods. These are souvenirs you won't find back in town, at friendly prices.
Rough per-person budget
- 2 nights' accommodation — guesthouses start around 400–700 THB a night, city hotels 800–1,800 THB. Prices in the two cities are similar; during events they rise and fill up fast.
- 3 days' car rental — driving yourself runs around 900–1,400 THB a day, which split between a few people isn't much, and it beats waiting for public transport since both cities' sights are out of town.
- Entry fees — a combined Phanom Rung + Mueang Tam ticket is around 30 THB for Thais, the Phu Wiang dinosaurs 20 THB for adults, and Khao Kradong and the 9-tier pagoda are free.
- Fuel — Buriram to Khon Kaen plus driving around both cities adds up to several hundred kilometres; budget around 800–1,200 THB per car.
- 3 days' food — eating at local spots and trying both provinces' specialities, around 800–1,200 THB.
When is the best time to go
Isan is good year-round, but the cool season (Nov–Feb) has the nicest weather, easiest for walking temples and driving. Avoid the peak heat around April if you don't want to walk Phanom Rung under a blazing sun. The busiest time in Buriram is the sunlight-through-the-doorways days at Phanom Rung, four times a year, along with big MotoGP or football events, when city accommodation fills up and gets pricier. Phu Wiang is closed Mondays, so if your trip lands on a Monday, move Phu Wiang to another day.
Can you reorder it or shorten it?
Yes. If you're starting from Khon Kaen, just flip the direction — do Khon Kaen on day one, then drive south to Buriram. The order of sights stays the same, just reversed. If you genuinely only have 2 days, cut some of the in-city stops and keep just the headliners — Phanom Rung on the Buriram side and the Phu Wiang dinosaurs on the Khon Kaen side — then use day two as a cross-province driving day plus one sight. But with a full 3 days you'll see both cities unrushed and get the most out of the journey.
