🛣️ Cross-province road trip

Buriram–Khon Kaen
Two Isan Cities in 3 Days

If you've come all the way to Isan, you could stick to one province — but Buriram and Khon Kaen sit only about 190 km apart, an easy drive back-to-back, so they pair up neatly into a cross-province trip. Day one covers Buriram's headliners: a thousand-year-old Khmer temple and an extinct volcano. Day two you drive north into Khon Kaen, the biggest city in central Isan. Day three you take in the Phu Wiang dinosaurs and the 9-tier pagoda before heading home. This is an unrushed 3-day, 2-night plan with times, distances, entry fees, and food stops we've checked.

Buriram–Khon Kaen Two Isan Cities in 3 Days

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

This trip works best if you have your own car or rent one and drive yourself, because the sights are spread far apart — the temples on Buriram's outskirts and the Phu Wiang dinosaurs out on the western side of Khon Kaen. The main route runs south to north: start in Buriram, then drive up to Khon Kaen so you never double back. Build in buffer time for the cooler hours and for food stops along the way, because Isan is a land of good eating.

How to get there

Driving yourself is the smoothest way to do this trip. You can reach Buriram by flying into Buriram Airport, taking the southern Isan railway line, or catching a coach from Mo Chit, then renting a car in town. Buriram and Khon Kaen are about 190 km apart, roughly a 3-hour drive. If you'd rather not drive, there are a few direct buses a day between the two cities, taking about 4 hours — but once you arrive, sights like Phanom Rung and Phu Wiang are both outside the city centres and awkward to reach by public transport. Renting a car at around 900–1,400 THB a day is the most worthwhile and flexible option.

Day 1

Buriram — Phanom Rung, Mueang Tam, Khao Kradong

08:00
Arrive in Buriram, grab an early breakfast, then head out to Phanom RungPhanom Rung is in Chaloem Phra Kiat district, about 60 km from the city centre, a little over an hour's drive. Leave early so you can walk the temple before the sun gets harsh. Fill up on fuel and bring drinking water — shops out there are scarcer than in town.
09:30
Walk up Phanom Rung templeA pink sandstone temple set on the rim of an old volcano, with a naga bridge and a long stairway leading up to the main prang. Entry is 20 THB for Thais, 100 THB for foreigners, open 07:00–18:00. The sun up there is fierce, so pack a hat and umbrella. Four times a year the sunlight aligns through all 15 doorways — crowds flock in to see it.
11:30
Come down from Phanom Rung and continue to Mueang Tam templeMueang Tam sits about 8 km below Phanom Rung — a lowland Khmer temple whose highlights are the four L-shaped ponds at each corner and the five-headed nagas along their edges. A combined Phanom Rung + Mueang Tam ticket runs around 30 THB for Thais, better value than buying separately. Grab lunch near the car park or in the Ban Khok Mueang community; budget around 100 THB or so per person.
14:30
Drive back into town and head up Khao Kradong Forest ParkKhao Kradong is an extinct volcano hundreds of thousands of years old. At the summit stands Phra Suphatthara Bophit, the city's large signature Buddha image. You can climb the roughly 290-step naga stairway or drive up and park at the top. No entry fee. There's a suspension bridge over the crater and a city viewpoint, open around 06:00–18:00 — late afternoon light makes for great photos.
18:00
Dinner in town, stop for the stand-up meatballs at the train stationThe stand-up meatballs behind Buriram railway station are a local institution that's been going for over 50 years. They're 5 THB a skewer, or a 20 THB set of 6, dipped in a tamarind sauce. Several well-known stalls line up side by side — a good snack before a proper dinner in town. Stay the night in Buriram and save your energy for tomorrow's long drive.
Day 2

Drive north to Khon Kaen + explore the city

08:30
Check out and leave Buriram for Khon KaenIt's about 190 km from Buriram to Khon Kaen, roughly a 3-hour drive. The route runs through Nang Rong and Nakhon Ratchasima before branching north, or you can take the Phutthaisong–Ban Phai road instead. Most of it is main highway and easy driving. Fill up before you leave and use the rest stops along the way.
11:30
Arrive in Khon Kaen, drop your bags at the hotel, find lunchKhon Kaen is the biggest city in central Isan, with far more restaurants and cafés than Buriram. For lunch, try a famous grilled-chicken spot or an Isan restaurant in town; budget around 120–250 THB per person. Pick a place to stay in the city centre or near Bueng Kaen Nakhon so you can stroll there in the evening.
14:00
Sit out the afternoon heat at a caféKhon Kaen is a university town, so the cafés are plentiful and come in all styles — from spots downtown to ones on the rural edge by the fields. Sip a coffee and rest your legs after the long drive; a cup runs around 55–90 THB. Some places have photo corners and a bakery too.
16:00
Head to Bueng Kaen Nakhon for a lakeside stroll and sunsetBueng Kaen Nakhon is a large lake of over 600 rai right in the middle of the city — the landmark where locals come to walk, exercise, and watch the sunset. Paths, open plazas, and coffee shops ring the water, and the evening breeze is pleasant. A good place to unwind after a morning of driving.
18:30
Dinner, then the walking street if the day lines upKhon Kaen has a walking street on weekends with local food, souvenirs, and craftwork. If your day doesn't line up, there's plenty of Isan food or mookata barbecue in town to settle into. Local specialities worth trying are Khon Kaen rice noodles (mee) and grilled chicken. Stay the night in Khon Kaen.
Day 3

Phu Wiang dinosaurs + the 9-tier pagoda, then head home

08:30
Breakfast, then out to the Phu Wiang Dinosaur MuseumPhu Wiang is in Wiang Kao district, about 87 km west of central Khon Kaen, around a 90-minute drive. This is where Thailand's first dinosaur fossil was discovered. Set off a bit early so you're not rushed, since you'll need to drive back into the city in the afternoon.
10:00
Walk through the Phu Wiang Dinosaur MuseumInside are life-sized dinosaur models that move and make sounds, plus exhibits on the origin of the Earth and real fossils. Kids love it. Open Tuesday–Sunday 09:30–16:30, closed Mondays. Entry for Thais is 20 THB adults, 10 THB children; foreigners 60 THB adults. If you're going on a Monday you'll need to reshuffle the plan.
12:30
Drive back to the city, find lunch along the wayOn the way back from Phu Wiang there are à la carte spots and roadside Isan restaurants. Order som tam with grilled chicken or a plate of fried rice to refuel before heading in; budget around 100 THB or so per person. Allow a little extra time for traffic coming into central Khon Kaen.
14:30
Climb Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon (the 9-tier pagoda) at Wat Nong WaengPhra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon is a 9-tier stupa in the middle of the city. Climb to the top floor for a 360-degree view of the city and Bueng Kaen Nakhon. Each tier has murals telling the life of the Buddha and Isan ways of life — a fitting way to close the trip, with both merit and a city view. It sits right by Bueng Kaen Nakhon, so you can stroll on from there.
16:00
Buy some souvenirs, then head homeKhon Kaen souvenirs include the city's rice noodles, Chinese sausage, Isan sausage, and silk, all easy to find in town. If you're flying home, Khon Kaen Airport has more frequent flights than Buriram. If you drove, you can drop the car in Khon Kaen if you rented it as a one-way return — check the terms with the rental company first.

The Buriram–Khon Kaen driving route

The two cities sit about 190 km apart, roughly a 3-hour drive with no stops. The main route leaves Buriram toward Nang Rong, into Nakhon Ratchasima, then takes the Mittraphap highway north to Khon Kaen — good roads with petrol stations and restaurants the whole way. A slightly shorter route runs through Phutthaisong and Ban Phai, heading straight north, but parts of it are two-lane and slower going. For a first trip, the route through Korat is the more reassuring choice. Fill the tank before you leave the city.

Rough per-person budget

  • 2 nights' accommodation — guesthouses start around 400–700 THB a night, city hotels 800–1,800 THB. Prices in the two cities are similar; during events they rise and fill up fast.
  • 3 days' car rental — driving yourself runs around 900–1,400 THB a day, which split between a few people isn't much, and it beats waiting for public transport since both cities' sights are out of town.
  • Entry fees — a combined Phanom Rung + Mueang Tam ticket is around 30 THB for Thais, the Phu Wiang dinosaurs 20 THB for adults, and Khao Kradong and the 9-tier pagoda are free.
  • Fuel — Buriram to Khon Kaen plus driving around both cities adds up to several hundred kilometres; budget around 800–1,200 THB per car.
  • 3 days' food — eating at local spots and trying both provinces' specialities, around 800–1,200 THB.

When is the best time to go

Isan is good year-round, but the cool season (Nov–Feb) has the nicest weather, easiest for walking temples and driving. Avoid the peak heat around April if you don't want to walk Phanom Rung under a blazing sun. The busiest time in Buriram is the sunlight-through-the-doorways days at Phanom Rung, four times a year, along with big MotoGP or football events, when city accommodation fills up and gets pricier. Phu Wiang is closed Mondays, so if your trip lands on a Monday, move Phu Wiang to another day.

Can you reorder it or shorten it?

Yes. If you're starting from Khon Kaen, just flip the direction — do Khon Kaen on day one, then drive south to Buriram. The order of sights stays the same, just reversed. If you genuinely only have 2 days, cut some of the in-city stops and keep just the headliners — Phanom Rung on the Buriram side and the Phu Wiang dinosaurs on the Khon Kaen side — then use day two as a cross-province driving day plus one sight. But with a full 3 days you'll see both cities unrushed and get the most out of the journey.

FAQ

How far apart are Buriram and Khon Kaen, and is it a long drive?

About 190 km apart, roughly a 3-hour drive with no stops. The main route runs through Nang Rong and Nakhon Ratchasima, then takes the Mittraphap highway north. A direct bus between the two cities takes about 4 hours, with only a few departures a day.

How many days is ideal for Buriram–Khon Kaen?

3 days, 2 nights is just right. Day one covers Phanom Rung, Mueang Tam, and Khao Kradong in Buriram. Day two is the cross-province drive up to Khon Kaen, then the city and Bueng Kaen Nakhon. Day three is the Phu Wiang dinosaurs and the 9-tier pagoda before heading home. You can compress it into 2 days, but you'll have to pick only the headliners.

What days is Phu Wiang dinosaurs open, and how much is entry?

The Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum is open Tuesday–Sunday, 09:30–16:30, closed every Monday. Entry for Thais is 20 THB for adults and 10 THB for children; for foreigners it's 60 THB for adults and 30 THB for children. It's in Wiang Kao district, about 87 km west of central Khon Kaen.

Can you do this trip without your own car?

You can, but it's awkward, because the main sights like Phanom Rung and the Phu Wiang dinosaurs are both outside the city centres and hard to reach by public transport. We'd suggest renting a car at around 900–1,400 THB a day, or hiring a car with a driver — that's the most flexible and time-efficient option for a cross-province trip like this.

Can you start in Khon Kaen and end in Buriram?

Yes — the order can be flipped depending on where you enter. If you fly into or start from Khon Kaen, do Khon Kaen first, then drive south to Buriram. The distance and time are the same, just with the days reversed. Choose whichever city is more convenient to enter and exit from.
