Chai Nat–Suphan Buri
2 Days, 1 Night

Chai Nat and Suphan Buri sit right next to each other, just over an hour apart by car along Highway 340, so pairing them into one trip is easy. This route starts with the bird park and Chao Phraya Dam on the Chai Nat side, stops at the old town of Sapphaya, then drifts south to walk the century-old Sam Chuk market, pay respects at Wat Pa Lelai, and finish at the Banharn–Jaemsai Tower in the centre of Suphan Buri.

Chai Nat–Suphan Buri 2 Days, 1 Night

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

If you want to explore central Thailand without rushing, these two provinces go well together. Chai Nat is known for its bird park, the Chao Phraya Dam, and quiet old riverside communities, while Suphan Buri has a century-old market, a temple over a thousand years old, and a viewpoint right in town. It's about 70 kilometres from Chai Nat town down to Suphan Buri, a single straight run along Highway 340, which makes it a natural fit for a 2-day, 1-night trip.

Before you go: routes and getting around

  • Driving yourself is by far the easiest — the sights are spread across different districts, and there isn't much public transport between them, so having your own car makes everything smoother.
  • The main road is Highway 340 — it links Chai Nat and Suphan Buri directly, passing through Sapphaya, Doembang Nangbuat, and Sam Chuk before reaching Suphan Buri town.
  • You can stay on either side — spend the first night in Chai Nat town and then head south, or drive on and stay near Sam Chuk/Suphan Buri town. This plan has you sleeping in the Sam Chuk–Suphan Buri zone so you can hit the market early on day two without a hassle.
  • Best time to go — November to February, when the air is cooler and walking the markets and open-air temples is far more comfortable than in the hot season.

Day 1 — Chai Nat: bird park, dam, old Sapphaya town

Day 1

The Chai Nat side

09:00
Start at Chai Nat Bird ParkIn Khao Tha Phra subdistrict, right next to town. Open roughly 09:00–16:00, closed Monday, Tuesday, and public holidays. Entry is around 60 THB for adults, less for kids. The highlight is the big walk-in aviary where you can watch hundreds of bird species fly close by. A relaxed stroll takes an hour and a half to two hours.
11:30
Pay respects at Wat ThammamunAn old temple on Khao Thammamun beside the Chao Phraya River, one of Chai Nat's landmark temples. Luang Pho Thammachak sits in the hilltop hall, with a lovely river view. A quick stop along the way.
12:30
Lunch at a riverside restaurantAround Chai Nat town there are several river-fish restaurants along the Chao Phraya. Grilled fish and fish tom yum are the local specialities. Pick a place with seating right by the water for the atmosphere.
14:00
Chao Phraya DamIn Sapphaya district — Thailand's first large diversion dam. You can drive across the crest and photograph the wide river view. By early afternoon the sun has softened, making it comfortable to walk around.

Day-one tip

The Chao Phraya Dam is a sunset spot locals like to sit at. If you're not in a hurry to get to Suphan Buri, you can linger for the evening light on the dam crest before driving on — just be careful driving the smaller roads after dark.

Day 2 — Suphan Buri: century-old market, ancient temple, viewpoint

Day 2

The Suphan Buri side

08:30
Walk the century-old Sam Chuk marketAn old timber-shophouse market beside the Tha Chin River in Sam Chuk district. Open daily, roughly 08:00–17:00, with old-style coffee, noodles, Thai sweets, and snacks filling the lanes. Mornings are still uncrowded and easy to walk, and the old wooden houses photograph beautifully.
10:30
Pay respects at Wat Pa Lelai WorawihanIn Rua Yai subdistrict in Suphan Buri town, an ancient temple over a thousand years old housing the large Luang Pho To in a tall hall. It's a landmark temple held in deep respect by locals.

13:30
Go up the Banharn–Jaemsai TowerA tower in Chaloem Phatra Rachini Park, over a hundred metres tall, with a lift up to a 360-degree viewpoint over the whole of Suphan Buri town. Below it is a public park you can stroll around.
15:30
Stop at Don Chedi or grab souvenirs before heading backIf you've still got the energy, the Don Chedi Memorial commemorating the elephant-back duel isn't far from town. Or pick up some Suphan Buri–Chai Nat souvenirs and drive home — either works.

What days is the Sam Chuk market open?

Should I stay on the Chai Nat or Suphan Buri side?

It depends on your order. This trip suggests doing Chai Nat on day one and then sleeping in the Sam Chuk area or Suphan Buri town, so you can wake up and walk the Sam Chuk market early on day two without a long drive.
