Chanthaburi in 2 Days, 1 Night
Old Town, Phlio Waterfall & the Sea

Chanthaburi sits about 3.5 hours' drive from Bangkok, but in one short trip you get a riverside old town, a shady forest waterfall, and the eastern seaboard's beaches. This 2-day, 1-night plan lays out a route that doesn't double back: spend day one wandering the town, then head out to nature and the sea on day two — complete with times, entry fees, and places where locals actually eat.

Chanthaburi in 2 Days, 1 Night Old Town, Phlio Waterfall & the Sea

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

What makes Chanthaburi work is the short distances packed with variety. A car is by far the easiest way to get around, because the day-two stops (Phlio Waterfall, Chao Lao Beach, Kung Krabaen Bay) all sit outside town where public transport is awkward. This plan keeps you in town for the single overnight, then swings out to the coast the next morning, so you only have to pack up once.

Trip overview: 2 days, 1 night

  • Day 1 — Arrive around midday, walk the Chanthaboon riverside community, see the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, eat crab noodles, and browse the gem market in the evening.
  • Night 1 — Stay in Chanthaburi town, within walking distance of the riverside. Rooms run from a few hundred to low-thousand THB.
  • Day 2 — Morning at Phlio Waterfall, midday by the sea at Chao Lao Beach and Laem Sing, afternoon in the mangroves at Kung Krabaen Bay, then pick up local goods before heading home.
  • Rough budget — Around 1,500–2,500 THB per person including lodging, food, and entry fees (fuel not included).

Day 1 — The riverside old town

Day 1

Riverside community · Cathedral · Crab noodles · Gem market

12:00
Arrive in Chanthaburi, check in to a hotel in townPick a place in town or near the riverside community so you can walk around in the afternoon and evening without driving again.
12:30
Lunch: Chanthaburi crab noodlesThe town's signature dish — orange rice noodles stir-fried with crab meat, sweet with a touch of sour. Several restaurants in town serve it at lunch, around 60–120 THB a plate depending on how much crab you get.
14:00
Walk the Chanthaboon riverside communityAn old quarter along the Chanthaburi River with restored wooden houses, a community museum, riverside cafes, and traditional sweet shops. Open roughly 08:00–18:00; some houses open only on weekends. Free to wander.
15:30
Cross the bridge to the Cathedral of the Immaculate ConceptionThe largest Gothic-style Catholic church in Thailand, right across from the riverside community — just walk over the footbridge. Dress modestly; entry is free.
17:00
Coffee break at a riverside cafeSeveral cafes in the community face the river — a good spot to sit through the cooler late afternoon before dinner.
19:00
Dinner: pork-herb noodles near the gem marketNoodles in a fragrant herbal broth, from long-running shops around the gem market junction. Popular spots like Jay Rin open in the evening; by around 7pm the crowds build and you'll likely queue.

Day 1 tip

Chanthaburi's gem market only buzzes on Friday through Sunday. Come on a weekday and the gem stalls are quieter, though the restaurants in that area still open as usual. If you want to see the gem trading in full swing, plan your trip across a weekend.

Where to stay in Chanthaburi town

For this plan, stay in town: day one is all about walking the riverside, and on day two morning you can drive out to the coast in any direction. In-town options range from a few-hundred-THB guesthouse to small hotels in the low thousands to boutiques in the old quarter. If you'd rather wake up to the sea, there are places at Chao Lao Beach — but you'll have to drive into town on the first day for the old quarter.

Recommended

Beach lovers

Stay at Chao Lao Beach

Beachfront resorts where you wake up right by the sand. Good if you want to focus on the sea, but you'll need to drive into town for the old quarter.

09:00

16:30
Pick up local goods before heading backChanthaburi's most popular take-home treats are fried durian, durian paste, Chanthaburi pepper, and seasonal fruit — grab some before driving back to Bangkok.

About waterfall opening hours

Sources list Phlio Waterfall's opening time as either 08:00 or 08:30, closing around 16:30–17:00. In the rainy season (May–Oct) the water runs stronger and looks better, but the trail gets slippery, so non-slip shoes help. You can call ahead to check at 0 3943 4528.

Getting there and the best time to go

  • From Bangkok — About 245 km, 3–3.5 hours via Motorway 7 onto Highway 3.
  • No car? — Vans and buses run from Ekkamai to Chanthaburi bus terminal, then songthaews or motorbike taxis around town — but the day-two coastal stops are hard to reach by hailing a ride. Renting a car or chartering a taxi is the way to go.
  • Fruit season — April–June is durian, rambutan, and mangosteen season; come then and you can stop at a fruit-orchard buffet.
  • Beat the traffic — Leave Bangkok early morning or Friday night to reach Chanthaburi in time for an afternoon walk on day one.
