Cafes + Old Town
on the Chanthaboon Waterfront, 2 Days

The Chanthaboon Waterfront is Chanthaburi's oldest street, running about 900 meters along the Chanthaburi River and lined with Sino-European shophouses close to 300 years old. Over the past few years a wave of new-generation cafes has opened inside those old buildings, so you can easily spend a whole day wandering here. This is a 2-day plan that pulls cafe-hopping, old-town architecture, a walk across the bridge to the cathedral, and Chanthaburi's local dishes into one trip.

πŸ”„ Updated 21 Jun 2026

This trip suits people who like to wander slowly, photograph old buildings, sit in cafes with a coffee, and not drive much, because all the main sights are within walking distance of each other around the Chanthaboon Waterfront. We set day one for walking the full length of Sukhaphiban Road with stops at the standout cafes, and day two for crossing the bridge to the cathedral and picking up local food and souvenirs before heading home.

A few things to know before you go

  • Parking β€” Sukhaphiban Road through the community is narrow and hard for cars to pass each other. It's best to park near a temple lot or on an outer street and walk in.
  • Best timing β€” Most cafes open around 9:00 AM–6:00 PM, and several close on certain weekdays. Saturdays and Sundays have more places open but bigger crowds.
  • What to wear β€” If you plan to enter the cathedral, dress modestly and cover your shoulders, since it's a sacred place still used for actual services.
  • Carry cash β€” Many small shops in the community take only cash or bank transfer.

Day 1 β€” Walk Sukhaphiban Road + cafes in old shophouses

Day one is about walking the full Chanthaboon Waterfront. This street was once the trading quarter of Chinese and Vietnamese immigrants, so the shophouses on both sides blend Chinese-European styles with old fretwork timber houses. Walk slowly and you can drift between cafes and souvenir shops the whole way.

Day 1

Walk the old town + waterfront cafe crawl

11:00 AM
Walk on and visit the House No. 69 Learning CenterAn old house opened as a space telling the story of riverside life in the past. You can go in and see old household objects and photographs.
12:00 PM

4:30 PM
Walk back along the end of the street, catching the evening light by the riverThe late light is soft, and the old buildings against the river photograph beautifully. Stop at the little souvenir shops along the way.
6:00 PM
Dinner: Sen Chan stir-fried with crab, a Chanthaburi classicThe long-running Sen Chan crab noodle shops are both in town and near the community. The chewy noodles are stir-fried with fresh crab in a sweet-sour sauce, one dish worth trying at least once.

Tip

Day 2 β€” Cathedral + riverside cafe + souvenirs
