Chiang Mai for Nature Lovers Doi Inthanon, Mon Jam & Waterfalls in 3 Days

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Nature in Chiang Mai is about more than just Doi Suthep. If you have around three days and can manage the driving, a whole other side of the province opens up: the highest peak in the country, big waterfalls that are easy to walk to, and hill villages where you wake up to a sea of mist right off your balcony. This plan has you spend one night in town and one night up on the mountain on the Mae Rim side, so you're not driving up and down repeatedly.

Read this before you set off

This route suits people who drive themselves or hire a car with a driver, because the sights are spread in different directions (Inthanon is south of the city, Mon Jam is north). If you're not driving, the easiest option is a one-day Doi Inthanon tour, then charter a car up to Mon Jam on a separate day.

The 3-day, 2-night plan at a glance

  • Day 1 — Full day on Doi Inthanon: the summit, the Ang Ka nature trail, the twin royal pagodas, Wachirathan Waterfall and the Inthanon Royal Project, then back to sleep in the city.
  • Day 2 — Leave the city mid-morning, stop at Mae Sa Waterfall on the Mae Rim side, have lunch, then head up to Mon Jam, check into a mountain stay and catch the sunset.
  • Day 3 — Wake early for the sea of mist, walk the flower gardens at the Nong Hoi Royal Project, sit at a mountain-view cafe, then take your time heading back down to the city.

Day 1 — Doi Inthanon, the Roof of Thailand

Doi Inthanon is in Chom Thong district, about 100 km from the city — roughly an hour and a half of driving to reach the park gate. Leave early, because the summit is cold and there are a lot of spots to see. Park entry is much cheaper for Thais than for foreigners. For foreigners it's 300 THB for adults, 150 THB for children, plus 30 THB per car. Open 05:30–18:30.

Day 1

Full day on Doi Inthanon

07:00
Leave central Chiang Mai heading for Chom ThongGrab khao soi or grilled-pork sticky rice on the way, and fill up the tank before you climb.
08:45

09:30
Up to the highest summit at 2,565 m + the Ang Ka nature trailA wooden boardwalk winds through cloud forest with moss-covered trees. An easy 30–45 minute walk. It's cold up here, so bring a warm jacket.
11:00

12:30
Lunch break at the Inthanon Royal ProjectFresh vegetables, rainbow trout, seasonal strawberries and the project's own coffee shop.
14:30
Wachirathan WaterfallThe biggest, most powerful waterfall in the park that's also the easiest to reach on foot. Cool spray reaches the whole viewpoint.
15:30
Stop at Mae Klang Waterfall before leaving the parkA single-tier waterfall about 100 m high. The entrance is just before the first checkpoint coming from the city side.
17:30
Drive back to Chiang Mai and check into your staySleep in the city tonight so you're well rested before heading up to Mon Jam tomorrow.

Tips for the Doi Inthanon day

The Kew Mae Pan trail is a highlight hike with sweeping views, but it closes every year for forest recovery from June to October and reopens in November. If you visit in the rainy season, skip it and do the Ang Ka trail instead.

Day 2 — Mae Rim waterfall, then up to Mon Jam

Today you switch directions to the north of the city. Mon Jam is in Mae Raem sub-district, Mae Rim, about 37–40 km from town — roughly an hour's drive up via Highway 107 then 1096. No need to rush out, because you can still hit a waterfall on the Mae Rim side first thing in the morning.

Day 2

Mae Rim to Mon Jam

09:30
Leave your city stay and head for Mae Rim districtCheck out first, since tonight you're sleeping up on the mountain.
10:30
Mae Sa Waterfall (km 7, Mae Rim–Samoeng road)A multi-tier waterfall inside Doi Suthep–Pui National Park. You can climb up to see several tiers, and a few of them are shallow enough for a cooling dip.
12:30
Lunch at the foot of the mountain before heading up to Mon JamNear the turnoff up there are local eateries and made-to-order shops, with dishes starting at around 60–120 THB.
14:00
Drive up to Mon Jam and check into a mountain stayThe final stretch is steep and winding. If you're unsure about your car, a pickup is best — or just drive slowly.
15:30
Stroll the Mon Jam viewpoints + a mountain-view cafeWTF Coffee Camp has a 100 THB entry fee that you can spend in the shop. They do pizza and drinks.
18:00
Watch the sunset from your stay's balconyIt gets cold fast after 6 pm, so have a warm jacket ready.

Day 3 — Mon Jam sea of mist, then back to the city

The whole point of staying on Mon Jam is waking up to a sea of mist drifting through the valley. The mist is thickest and the cool-climate flowers are in full bloom from November to February. Take the last day at an easy pace before heading back down to the city.

Day 3

Mon Jam morning, then down to the city

06:00
Wake up for the sea of mist at the viewpointThe best mist usually comes after a night of rain or on very cold mornings.
08:00

09:30
Hydrangea gardens at the Nong Hoi Royal ProjectA large hydrangea garden in Mae Rim, about 1.3 km from Mon Jam. Entry is around 150 THB and includes a drink at the cafe.
11:00
Drop by Mae Khi Sheep Farm / flower gardens, as you likeThe sheep farm costs around 100 THB to enter, plus 40 THB for feed — great if you're with kids.
12:30
Head gradually back down to Chiang Mai cityUse a low gear on the steep descent and watch for oncoming traffic.
14:00

What to prepare and pack

Essential

A warm jacket

The Doi Inthanon summit and Mon Jam mornings get cold — some days below 10°C. Bring a jacket and a hat.

Self-drive

A road-ready car

The climb to the summit and the final stretch of Mon Jam are steep. Check your brakes and tyres first. A small car can make it, just drive slowly.

On the mountain

Cash

Park fees, flower gardens and many mountain shops mainly take cash, and the signal is patchy in places.

High season

Book your stay ahead

Mon Jam rooms with a sea-of-mist view fill up fast in the cool season and on long weekends. Book several weeks ahead.

FAQ

Can you do Doi Inthanon and Mon Jam in the same day?

Not recommended, since the two are in opposite directions. Doi Inthanon is south of the city (Chom Thong district) while Mon Jam is to the north (Mae Rim district). Driving between them in one day is exhausting and far too rushed. Split them across separate days — you'll need at least 2–3 days to see everything properly.

How much is entry to Doi Inthanon?

In 2026 it's 300 THB for foreign adults, 150 THB for children, plus 30 THB per car. Thais pay less. If you go up to the twin pagodas zone there's an extra fee of around 40 THB. The park is open 05:30–18:30.

When is the best time for a nature trip to Chiang Mai?

November to February is best — cool weather, a thick sea of mist at Mon Jam and cool-climate flowers in bloom. In the rainy season (June–October) the waterfalls are full and beautiful, but the Kew Mae Pan trail on Doi Inthanon closes for forest recovery.

Can you do this plan without driving yourself?

Yes, but you'll need to split it up. Doi Inthanon has plenty of one-day tours with hotel pickup. For Mon Jam, it's best to charter a car with a driver to take you up and stay overnight, because public transport doesn't reach it easily and the sights are spread out.

Can you swim at the waterfalls on this plan?

Wachirathan and Mae Klang are big, powerful waterfalls — more for the views than for swimming. Mae Sa Waterfall on the Mae Rim side has several tiers, and a few of them are shallow enough for a cooling dip. Watch for slippery rocks and heed the warning signs during high water.
