Chumphon Itinerary
3 Days, 2 Nights

Chumphon is the town most people drive straight through on their way south, but stop for three days and you'll find it has the full package: white-sand beaches with clear water, island snorkeling spots where the coral is still healthy, and a local robusta coffee scene that's really taking off. This plan keeps things unhurried — beach day first, a full day on the boat snorkeling second, and a cafe crawl before you head home on day three. With real timings, real prices, and rain-day backups.

Chumphon Itinerary 3 Days, 2 Nights

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Chumphon sits at the gateway to the south. It's about a 7-hour drive from Bangkok, or you can take the train to Chumphon station, or fly into Chumphon airport and rent a car from there. A 3-day, 2-night trip is just right for covering the town's three main draws — the beaches, island snorkeling, and the coffee cafes — without rushing yourself into exhaustion. The plan below is based on spots that are actually open and prices you can find right now, so adjust it around the days the boats are running.

Trip Overview — 3 Days

  • Day 1 — Arrive, swim at Thung Wua Laen Beach, stay in the seaside Pathio area, seafood for dinner
  • Day 2 — Full-day snorkeling trip to the Chumphon Islands, Koh Ngam Noi and Ngam Yai, with a chance to spot whale sharks
  • Day 3 — Sai Ree Beach, pay respects at the Prince Chumphon Shrine, wrap up with a robusta coffee cafe and pick up some souvenirs

Pick the right season

Gulf-side spots like Chumphon are best for swimming from February through May, when the sea is clear and the waves are calm. During monsoon season, roughly October to December, the snorkeling boats may not run at all. If you're coming then, check with a tour operator before you book your accommodation.

Day 1 — Arrive + Thung Wua Laen Beach

Day 1

Beaches and seaside seafood

10:30
Arrive in central Chumphon, rent or pick up a carIf you came by train or bus, there are songthaews from behind the municipal market out to Thung Wua Laen Beach, but renting a car is far more convenient for this trip.
11:30
Drive north to Pathio district and Thung Wua Laen BeachAbout 18 km from town. A gently sloping white-sand beach with a 2–3 km stretch of casuarina pines and gentle waves, good for swimming.
12:30
Lunch by the beach, then swim and relaxThere are several seafood spots along the beach. Order fresh prawns and squid in season, priced at market rates.
15:00
Check in around the Thung Wua Laen–Saphli areaBeachfront resorts like Nana Beach, Talaysai and Baan Talay are popular picks. Book ahead during high season.
16:30
Sit at a beachfront cafe and catch the cool breezeThere's a beachside slow bar that uses Chumphon coffee beans, plus newer spots like Summer Beach — good for photos and watching the sun drop below the sea.
18:30
Seafood dinnerPick a local southern-style restaurant in town or by the beach. Standout dishes around here are prawns stir-fried with shrimp paste and sator beans, and fresh mackerel.

On where to stay

If you're taking the snorkeling boat on day two, staying in the Pathio–Thung Wua Laen area puts you closer to the pier than staying in town, which cuts down a fair bit of travel time in the early morning. But if you'd rather make the last-day cafe crawl in town easy, spending the final night in town makes sense too.

Day 2 — Snorkeling the Chumphon Islands

This is the highlight of the trip. The Chumphon Islands are a marine national park where the coral is still in good shape. The snorkeling spots fall into two groups: the first is Koh Ngam Noi, Koh Ngam Yai, Koh Kalok and Koh Talu, and the other is Koh Matra, Koh Lak Raed, Koh Lawa and Koh Langka Jew. A one-day, four-island speedboat tour runs about 1,450–1,500 THB per person, including snorkeling gear, life jacket, lunch, fruit and insurance. Boats leave on set departures, so check with the operator before booking.

Day 2

A full day of sea and coral

07:30
Check in with the tour operator at the pier and collect your gearSeveral Chumphon snorkeling operators leave from the piers around Pak Nam Chumphon and Thung Wua Laen Beach. Arrive a little early for the briefing.
08:30
Set off for the first snorkeling spot, Koh Ngam NoiUnderwater rock walls and big schools of fish. Clear water and good visibility on calm days.
10:30
Continue snorkeling at Koh Ngam Yai and Koh KalokFrom March to May there's a chance to spot whale sharks — huge but harmless. For a lot of people, this is the whole reason they come.
12:30
Lunch on the boat or on an islandMost tours lay out a packed lunch or a simple buffet with seasonal fruit.
13:30
Last snorkeling spot, Koh Talu, plus a swim at the beachKoh Talu has a rock arch that's a popular photo spot, with shallow water that suits weaker swimmers.
15:30
Boat heads back to shoreYou'll reach the pier in the late afternoon. Shower and rest before going to find dinner.
18:30
An easy dinner, rest your legsA snorkeling day is more tiring than you'd expect. Pick a spot near your accommodation — a bowl of noodles or rice soup sits easy on the stomach.

Prep before you board

Wear reef-safe sunscreen, take seasickness pills before the boat leaves if you're prone to it, wear closed-heel shoes you can walk on rocks in, and bring a waterproof camera or a ziplock bag. The sun out on the Chumphon sea is genuinely strong — a hat and a long-sleeve shirt help a lot.

Day 3 — Sai Ree Beach, Prince Chumphon Shrine + Coffee

Day 3

Sea, devotion, and coffee to close out the trip

08:00
Breakfast, then check outIf you stayed at Thung Wua Laen, today you drive south back toward the town and Sai Ree Beach area.
09:00
Stroll along the sea at Sai Ree BeachA long white-sand beach in the Mueang district with a calm atmosphere and beachfront restaurants to relax at.
10:00
Pay respects at the Prince Chumphon Khet Udomsak Shrine + see the replica of HTMS Phra RuangA memorial to 'Sadet Tia,' the founder of the Royal Thai Navy, deeply revered by Chumphon locals. The site sits right next to Sai Ree Beach.
11:30
Stop at a robusta coffee cafeChumphon is one of Thailand's good robusta-growing areas. Try a spot like Robusta Station on Phetkasem Road or Thammada Cafe in town for that bold, local coffee flavor.
13:00
Lunch in townTry southern-style khanom jeen with curry sauce, or a southern rice-and-curry shop — local food that's easy to find and cheap.
14:30
Buy souvenirs: roasted coffee, southern curry paste, sun-dried mackerelMany cafes have a corner selling local OTOP community products, so you can grab it all in one place before heading home.
15:30
Set off homeIf you're connecting by train or ferry to Koh Tao or Samui, Thung Makham Noi pier has morning Lomprayah boats. Check the schedule in advance.

Chumphon Coffee Cafes Worth a Stop

Chumphon has grown robusta coffee for a long time — Ban Tham Sing is a well-known growing area — and the flavor is bold and rounded without the sourness. Lately a wave of newer cafes has popped up both in town and along the beach, so you can stop in as you go.

On Phetkasem Rd

Robusta Station

A cafe plus souvenir stop on Phetkasem Road serving local robusta coffee, with southern curry paste, dried fish and roasted coffee for sale. Open daily around 7:30–19:00 — handy for a stop along the way.

In town

Thammada Cafe and Eatery

A relaxed in-town cafe with both coffee and food. Open around 10:00–20:00, closed Wednesdays. Good for a long afternoon sit-down.

Beachfront

Beachfront slow bar at Thung Wua Laen

A beachside coffee shop using Chumphon beans, where you can sit in the sea breeze from morning to evening. Good for catching the sunset.

Rough Budget Per Person

  • 4-island snorkeling tour — around 1,450–1,500 THB, including gear, food and insurance
  • 2 nights' accommodation — beachfront resorts start around 800–2,000 THB/night, depending on season and room level
  • Food for 3 days — seafood and local dishes, around 1,000–1,500 THB
  • Cafes + souvenirs — budget around 400–800 THB
  • Getting around the province — car rental at 800–1,200 THB/day, or songthaews/taxis as needed

Straight talk

Chumphon isn't a town with a buzzing nightlife — evenings are fairly quiet. Its charm is in the nature and the easygoing pace. If you like a calm sea, good coffee, and aren't here for the party, you'll love it. But if you want a packed night scene, you'll need to push on to Koh Tao or Samui.

FAQ

Is 3 days and 2 nights enough for Chumphon?

It's just right for covering the town's three main draws — the beaches, island snorkeling, and coffee cafes. Swim on day one, take the full-day snorkeling boat on day two, and pay respects at the Prince Chumphon Shrine and do a cafe crawl before heading home on day three. If you want to carry on to Koh Tao or Samui, just add days.

How much does snorkeling the Chumphon Islands cost?

A one-day, four-island speedboat tour runs around 1,450–1,500 THB per person, including snorkeling gear, life jacket, lunch, fruit and insurance. The main islands are Koh Ngam Noi, Ngam Yai, Kalok and Talu. Book ahead and check the boat schedule with the operator first.

When's the best time to snorkel Chumphon, and will I see whale sharks?

The clearest, calmest sea is February through May, with March to May offering the best chance of spotting whale sharks compared to other times — but it's never guaranteed, since they're wild animals. During the monsoon, October to December, the boats may not run at all.

What's the difference between Thung Wua Laen and Sai Ree beaches?

Thung Wua Laen is in Pathio district, north of town — a 2–3 km beach that slopes gently and suits swimming, with plenty of beachfront resorts and cafes. Sai Ree Beach is in the Mueang district near the Prince Chumphon Shrine, with a quieter atmosphere that's better for strolling and paying respects.

What's the most convenient way to get to Chumphon?

It's about a 7-hour drive from Bangkok. The train to Chumphon station is convenient and budget-friendly, or you can fly into Chumphon airport and rent a car. Within the province there are songthaews to Thung Wua Laen Beach from behind the municipal market, but renting a car is more convenient for this plan.
