Chumphon–Prachuap
Coastal Drive, 3 Days

The coastline around Pathio (Chumphon) runs north into Bang Saphan and Ban Krut (Prachuap), a stretch of sea most people still haven't covered. The coastal road is quiet, the beaches are long, the water is clear, and there's fresh seafood the whole way. We've built this as a block-day plan: one beach zone per day, so you're not driving hundreds of kilometres a day. One day in Pathio, one day crossing over to Bang Boet and Bang Saphan, and another easy day picking up Ban Krut and Khao Thong Chai.

Chumphon–Prachuap Coastal Drive, 3 Days

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

This route works best if you have your own car (or rent one from Chumphon town), because the beaches and viewpoints are spread out beyond the towns and public transport doesn't reach them. The total distance from Pathio up to Ban Krut isn't far, an easy drive of around 1–1.5 hours between zones. The appeal is that it isn't packed like Hua Hin: fewer people, long beaches, and fresh seafood at prices that won't sting.

Why go block-day

Block day = lock the whole day into one zone, don't change hotels every night, don't drive long stretches. This approach suits the beaches around here because each one is worth sitting at for a while, not just a quick photo stop. We'd suggest one night near Pathio/Thung Wua Laen, then one more night up in Ban Krut or Bang Saphan.

The 3-day route at a glance

  • Day 1 — Pathio zone (Chumphon) Thung Wua Laen Beach, Noen Sai Ngam dune, Saphan Hin Kop. Cover the Chumphon side of the coast.
  • Day 2 — cross the province line to Bang Boet–Bang Saphan Drive the coastal road north past Bang Boet Beach (which straddles both provinces) on to Ao Bo Thong Lang.
  • Day 3 — Ban Krut + Khao Thong Chai Crescent-moon beach, the great chedi up on the hill, then loop back.

What to know before you go

  • Your own car is the answer The beaches and viewpoints sit outside the towns and public transport doesn't reach them. If you don't have a car, renting one in Chumphon town is the easiest move.
  • Fill up in the towns Stations are spread out along the coastal stretch, so top up before you leave town.
  • Best season is Nov–Apr Clear water, gentle waves. In the rainy season (May–Oct) the Gulf side gets waves and rain in spells, so check the forecast first.
  • Dress modestly for Khao Thong Chai and the chedi It's a sacred site, so wear sleeves and nothing too short.
  • Quiet beach = few facilities Some beaches like Bang Boet really are deserted, so pack snacks and water in the car just in case.

Can be trimmed shorter

If you only have 2 days, combine days 1 and 2: do Thung Wua Laen in the morning, then drive straight up to Bang Boet–Bang Saphan and stay over in Ban Krut. On day 2, climb Khao Thong Chai before heading home. You'll still get the core of the route.

FAQ

Is the Pathio–Bang Saphan coastal route a long drive?

Not far. The zones are about 1–1.5 hours apart. From Thung Wua Laen Beach (Pathio) up to Bang Boet and on to Bang Saphan–Ban Krut, it's an easy drive with no need to rush. That's exactly why we built it as a block-day plan with one beach zone per day.

Can I do this route without my own car?

It's much harder, because the beaches and viewpoints are outside the towns and public transport doesn't reach them. The easiest way is to rent a car in Chumphon town and drive yourself, or hire a car with a driver for the day.

How many nights should I stay, and where?

Two nights is about right for this plan. Stay the first night around Pathio/Thung Wua Laen, then move up to Ban Krut or Bang Saphan for the second so you're not driving back and forth. If you're short on time, a 2-day, 1-night version works too.

When is the sea at its best?

Around November to April, the Gulf side here is clear with gentle waves, good for swimming and photos. During the rainy season (May–Oct) there are waves and rain in spells, so check the weather forecast before you set off.

Which province is Bang Boet Beach in?

Bang Boet is a beach over 14 km long that straddles the line between Chumphon and Prachuap Khiri Khan, which makes it the natural cross-province point on this route. Few people, fine sand, great for a stroll along open water.
