Thung Wua Laen sits in Saphli subdistrict, Pathio district, about 12 km from Chumphon town, a 20–25 minute drive. It's the most developed beach in the province, which means you get hotels, restaurants and watersports rental shops all in one spot, yet it still doesn't feel crowded the way the big Andaman beaches do. Weekends draw more people; on weekdays it's quiet and relaxed.
The name comes from a local legend: long ago this area was thick with wildlife, and a hunter shot a wild ox (wua) that fell, then revived and ran off (laen). Hence Thung Wua Laen, the "field of the running ox." Today there's an ox statue by the sand that doubles as the beach's go-to photo spot.
What's the beach like — can you swim?
The sand here is soft and fine, easy to walk on barefoot. The beach shelves gently and the waves stay mild through the tourist season, so kids can swim. The water is pleasantly clear, though not the crystal-clear of an offshore island, I'll be honest about that. What sets this beach apart is its length and its calm, rather than postcard-clear water. Mornings and evenings are lovely for a stroll along the shore, and sunrise is good here since the beach faces east out to sea.
- Best water — around February to May, when the sea is calm, the water is clear and the wind is light
- Monsoon season — October to December brings strong wind and waves, and dive boats often cancel; check the forecast before you go
- Parking — free along the beachfront road, with shops to stop at all the way down
Heads-up before you go
If you're coming to swim or take a diving trip, avoid the late-year monsoon, when the waves get rough and boats usually don't run. Early to mid-year is the best window.

Watersports — what's there to do
Thung Wua Laen is Chumphon's main base for dive trips, with dive shops and gear-rental spots along the beach. Beyond plain swimming there's kayaking, SUP paddling, and snorkeling and scuba trips out to the Ko Ngam islands. The water here is calmer than an open beach, which makes it good for first-time paddlers.
- Kayak / SUP rental — from shops along the beach, roughly 100–200 THB per hour for an easy paddle along the shore
- Ko Ngam diving trip — boats run about 1 hour out from shore; snorkeling packages start around 1,450–1,750 THB per person, including lunch and gear
- Scuba diving — there are dive centers in the area; the draw is the soft corals and schools of fish at Ko Ngam Noi, with turtles and the occasional whale shark in some seasons
- Island hopping / fishing — you can charter a boat to nearby islands or go fishing with a local boat
The Ko Ngam group is made up of Ko Ngam Yai and Ko Ngam Noi. The dive sites have staghorn coral fields and plenty of marine life, and Ko Ngam Yai has a rock cliff shaped like the "Buddha's palm" that people like to stop and photograph. The water around the islands is much clearer than off the beach, so most people who come to Chumphon for diving head straight for these islands.
About transfer costs
Most dive packages charge extra for hotel pickup. From the Thung Wua Laen and Saphli area it runs around 1,500 THB per vehicle (up to 4 people), so it works out well if you're travelling as a group. Ask to have it bundled into the package when you book.
Beachfront restaurants locals actually go to
One of Thung Wua Laen's charms is that it has a wider spread of beachfront restaurants than other beaches in Chumphon, from fresh local-priced seafood to wood-fired pizza and good coffee shops opened by foreigners. These are the places with solid reviews that are genuinely open.
RimRua Seafood
A popular local seafood spot by the beach, with fresh shrimp, shellfish, crab and fish cooked bold southern style at friendly prices. This is where Chumphon locals bring out-of-towners.
View Sea Food
A Thai and seafood restaurant right on the sand with quick service and a sea view out front. The local Thai menu is easy eating, good for lunch after a swim.
Aqua viva
An Italian spot with a nice setting that many call the prettiest restaurant around here. The pasta and Mediterranean dishes are done seriously, good for a special meal.
Le Coco Chumphon
A pizza place reviewers rate as the best pizza in Chumphon, with thin crisp crust and generous toppings. A favourite with Thais and foreigners alike.
Le Betole
An Italian and pizza spot near the beach with friendly staff and solid, made-to-order pizza and pasta. A well-rounded choice for dinner.
Pirates Terrace
A European-style cafe and restaurant on a beachfront terrace where you can sip coffee with a long sea view. Good for a chilled afternoon or catching the sunset.
Take A Seat Cafe
A small cafe with homemade bread and coffee that reviewers unanimously praise. Good for breakfast before hitting the beach or a midday break.
K-Had Restaurant
A seafood spot at the far end of the beach with fresh fish and a laid-back feel. A local favourite for dinner by the sea.
Mali Blue's Bar
A relaxed beachfront bar with drinks and snacks, good for ending the day listening to the waves after dark.
Nana Beach Restaurant
The restaurant at Nana Beach Resort, right on the sand, with an international and Thai menu and open-air seating by the sea. Handy if you're staying nearby.
Besides the sit-down restaurants, there are Thai-style beach snacks too — grilled pork skewers, spring rolls, fried banana and coconut-milk ice cream to buy and eat as you walk. If you want the real local atmosphere, grab a few snacks and find a spot to sit on the sand.
