Best Thai cooking
classes in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai has a deep bench of Thai cooking schools, and plenty of them are genuinely good — some have thousands or even tens of thousands of reviews. What sets the city apart from Bangkok is the setting: most classes take you out to an organic farm or garden, where you walk the beds, smell the herbs straight from the soil, then cook in an open-air kitchen surrounded by fields. We picked six that are well reviewed and still running, from countryside farms to an old-city garden to a bamboo kitchen run by an Akha family. Each has its own character, so choose by the vibe you want. All of them teach in English, adjust spice levels, offer vegetarian or vegan versions, and send you home with the recipes.

An open-air bamboo kitchen run by an Akha family, going since 2015. The draw is volume — you cook around 11 dishes in one class, clearly more than most. It starts with a market walk to taste local ingredients, classes stay small for personal attention, and they handle five spice levels plus vegetarian and gluten-free. Rated 5.0 from over 7,200 reviews and ranked #1 cooking class in Chiang Mai.

FAQ

How long do Chiang Mai cooking classes take, and what do they cost?

Most offer both a half-day option (about 4–5 hours) and a full day. Half-day courses run roughly ฿1,000–1,200 and full-day around ฿1,400–1,500. The price usually covers the market walk, all ingredients, the meal you cook and a recipe book, and many include free hotel pickup within the old city.

Can I join if I'm vegetarian or have allergies?

Yes, at every school on this list. All of them do vegetarian or vegan versions and adjust spice to taste. If you have an allergy such as gluten or nuts, tell them when you book so they can prep the right ingredients and plan your dishes around it.

Do I need to book ahead, or can I walk in?

Book at least a day or two ahead, especially in high season (November–February), since the popular schools fill up fast and cap class sizes. Booking early also lets them arrange your hotel pickup and prep ingredients to your requests.
