Kalasin and Sakon Nakhon sit on opposite sides of the Phu Phan range. It's about 120 km from Kalasin town to Sakon Nakhon town, with Highway 213 as the main road, and roughly two and a half hours if you drive straight through. But the charm of this trip is everything you stop for along the way, so give yourself three days to take it slow. This route works best if you have your own car or a rental, since the sights are spread out and public transport barely reaches them.
Here's the shape of the plan. Day one covers the dinosaur side of Kalasin plus Lam Pao Dam. Day two heads into Phu Thai country, then climbs over Phu Phan into Sakon Nakhon. Day three takes in Sakon Nakhon town before the drive home. We've set it up to sleep one night in Kalasin and one in Sakon Nakhon, so you're not packing and unpacking constantly.
Day 1 β Kalasin, Dinosaur Town + Lam Pao Dam
Day 1
Sahatsakhan Β· Lam Pao Β· Kalasin town
09:00

12:30
Lunch in Sahatsakhan districtThere are made-to-order spots and roadside Isan restaurants around here, around 60β120 THB a meal. If you're craving freshwater fish, save it for dinner at Lam Pao Dam, where it's better value.
14:00
Lam Pao Dam, viewpoint and spillwayThe longest earthen dam in Isan. Take Highway 213 and follow the turnoff to the dam. The wide view is good for photos and an easy late-afternoon hang. There's a spot to swim near the spillway when the water's flowing.
17:00
Lakeside fish restaurantThe waterfront restaurant area serves grilled fish, fish tom yum, and fried fish, most of it from the dam's floating pens. Dinner runs about 150β250 THB per person.
19:00
Check in to your hotel in Kalasin townIt's about 35 km back into town. Staying in town tonight makes it easier to find lodging, coffee shops, and breakfast spots.
Day 1 tip
The Sirindhorn Museum closes every Monday. If your trip starts on a Monday, flip the order: do Lam Pao Dam first and save the museum for another day so you don't miss it.

This is the heart of the trip. Leave Kalasin town heading north to Kham Muang and Khao Wong districts, home to Phu Thai people who migrated from the Lao side generations ago. Spend the morning on the textiles and village life, then climb Highway 227 onto 213 over the Phu Phan ridge into Sakon Nakhon province in the afternoon.
Day 2

10:00
Phu Thai Cultural Center, Praewa silk, Ban PhonBan Phon is the weaving village that put Kalasin on the map for Praewa silk. The center has weaving demonstrations, you can study the hand-picked patterns, and you can buy directly from villagers. 15:30
Climb Highway 213 over the Phu Phan rangeYou leave Kalasin, top the ridge, and enter Sakon Nakhon. The road winds through forest, so drive slowly and watch the curves. This stretch is the seam between the two provinces and where you see the Phu Phan forest most clearly.
17:30
Check in to your hotel in Sakon Nakhon townYou'll reach town in the early evening. Drop your bags and find dinner by Nong Han lake. Tomorrow is a full day in Sakon Nakhon town.
About Praewa silk
Praewa is a silk woven with the pattern picked entirely by hand. The pricier pieces are the ones with dense patterns that take a month or more to weave. If you're buying a gift, ask the villagers whether it's fully hand-woven or part machine-made, so you can choose by budget and understand where the price comes from.
Day 3 β Sakon Nakhon, Nong Han, Temples, and a Hillside Wat
The last day covers Sakon Nakhon town, a city of stupas and the forest-monk tradition. You've got Nong Han, a huge lake, Wat Phra That Choeng Chum in the center of town, and a hillside temple with a wide-open view. Wrap up before mid-afternoon so you have time for the drive back.
Day 3
Sakon Nakhon town Β· Wat Tham Pha Daen Β· heading home
08:00

09:30
Wat Phra That Choeng Chum WorawihanThe stupa that pairs with the city of Sakon Nakhon, right in the center of town. You can pay respects and take in the old architecture without spending long. Locals treat it as the heart of the city.
10:30
Wat Tham Pha Daen, Mueang districtA temple on the slopes of Phu Phan, about 17 km from town, with rock carvings and a wide view over Sakon Nakhon. The final stretch up is steep, so you'll need a car with enough power or the temple's shuttle.
12:30
Lunch in Sakon Nakhon townTry local Sakon dishes like mu thup (pounded pork), naem nueang, and food from Nong Han. The town has restaurants across a range of price points.
14:00
Optional stop at the Ajaan Fan Ajaro MuseumIt's at Wat Pa Udom Somphon in Phanna Nikhom district, part of the Phu Phan forest-monk tradition. Worth a stop if your route home passes by; skip it without regret if you're short on time.
15:30
Start the drive homeFrom Sakon Nakhon back to Kalasin is about 120 km, or you can continue to Khon Kaen for a convenient flight or coach. Leave enough time to arrive before dark.
If You Only Have 2 Days, What Can You Cut?
- Cut Lam Pao Dam if you're not into lake views, and put that time into the dinosaur museum and Phu Thai country instead.
- Combine the Phu Thai day with the Phu Phan crossing: pick Ban Phon alone, cross Phu Phan in the afternoon, and sleep one night in Sakon Nakhon.
- On the last day, choose one: either Nong Han plus Wat Phra That Choeng Chum, or Wat Tham Pha Daen. If time's short, don't force all of it.
Getting Around and Where to Stay
Self-driveMain route
Highway 213 links Kalasin and Sakon Nakhon directly over the Phu Phan ridge. The road is good but has curves on the mountain crossing, so driving by day is safer.
2 nightsWhere to sleep
First night in Kalasin town, second night in Sakon Nakhon town. Both have hotels and mid-range lodging to choose from.
HomestayWant a community stay
Phu Thai homestays at Khok Kong or Ban Phon take guests. Book ahead and you'll get the full set meal and local performances.
Best time to go
The Phu Phan forest and the park's waterfalls are at their best from late rainy season into early cool season, around November to February, when it's pleasantly cool and the waterfalls still have water. In the dry season the falls can run dry, so it's better to focus on the culture and viewpoints instead.
