If you only have an hour or two in Ratchaburi, Khao Kaen Chan is one of the best uses of that time. It's only about 2 km from the town center, and you can drive all the way to the top — no tiring climb — yet you still get to pay your respects to the Buddha and look out over the whole of Ratchaburi. The hill is about 141 meters high, was originally called "Khao Chan Daeng," and sits right off Phetkasem Road, so it's easy to find.
Phra Si Mum Mueang at the summit
The main draw at the top is the shrine housing Phra Phuttha Nirokhantarai Chaiwat Chaturathit — a name so long that locals just shorten it to "Phra Si Mum Mueang." This is one of four images that King Rama IX had cast and bestowed to be enshrined in towns at the four cardinal points of the country: Ratchaburi, Lampang, Saraburi and Phatthalung. People in Ratchaburi consider it the guardian Buddha of the town and come regularly to pay respects and make wishes.
- Open daily — the hill and shrine are open roughly 07:00–18:00. Visiting the Buddha is free, with no entry fee.
- Dress respectfully — this is a place of worship, so dress neatly as you would at any temple.
- Parking at the top — you can drive up and park at the summit; it's a short walk from the parking area to the shrine.

Looking down over Ratchaburi town
The real charm of Khao Kaen Chan is the view. Stand at the top and you look down over Mueang Ratchaburi district spreading out almost a full 360 degrees, with the Mae Klong River winding through town and, further off, the odd limestone shapes of the Khao Ngu range. On a clear day you can see a long way out. A lot of people come up in the late afternoon to wait for the sun to drop behind the hills, and the breeze at the top is noticeably cooler than down below.
Best time to go
For nice light and photos, come around 16:30–17:30 — the sky turns soft and the town stands out clearly. If you'd rather try your luck with a thin layer of mist in the cool season, come at first light, but check the hill's opening time first.
The Khao Kaen Chan skywalk — what's new
The new addition that's put Khao Kaen Chan back in the conversation is the Khao Kaen Chan skywalk, which the Ratchaburi Provincial Administrative Organization launched in late 2025. It's a glass walkway jutting out from the cliff face, letting you look straight down over the town from more than 100 meters up, taking in both the town and the distant Khao Ngu stone park. The view all around is wide open in every direction.
- Opening hours — roughly 08:30–17:00 (different from the hours for going up to the Buddha, so plan your timing).
- Free trial period — entry was free when it first opened (the trial period runs until around late January 2026); after that the terms may change, so check before you go.
- Shuttle up the hill — a shuttle service carries about 10 people per trip, and there's a lift up to the viewpoint that takes about 5 people at a time.
- Rest areas and drinks — there's a spot up top to rest and take in the view, plus a drinks stall to catch your breath.
Straight talk
The skywalk has a glass floor, so if you're scared of heights your legs might wobble a little on the first step — but it's an easy walk and the path feels solid. Wear comfortable shoes for walking, since there's an uphill stretch and a bit more path to cover, and it gets busy on weekends, so leave time to queue.
How to get up Khao Kaen Chan
It's easier than you'd think, because a paved road winds all the way to the top. There are two main options.
Drive or ride up yourself
The road is narrow but paved the whole way, and you can drive up and park at the top. Good if you have your own vehicle — just watch for oncoming traffic on the bends and on busy days.
Take the skywalk shuttle
If you come while the skywalk is open, there's a shuttle running up and down. Good if you don't have a vehicle or don't want to drive up the hill yourself.
- Getting to Ratchaburi — about 1.5–2 hours' drive from Bangkok, or take a minivan/coach to the town center and then a taxi or motorbike taxi up the hill.
- Time to set aside — a relaxed visit to Khao Kaen Chan takes around 1–2 hours, including paying respects, taking photos and walking the skywalk.
- Parking — there's a lot at the top, but it can fill up on weekends; going a bit earlier makes it easier to find a spot.
Where to go next
Khao Kaen Chan is right in town, so it works well as either the start or the end of a trip. There are spots nearby you can tack on without driving far.
- Tham Khao Ngu — a limestone hill with old Buddha caves, not far from town and visible from the top of Khao Kaen Chan.
- Ratchaburi old town — stroll along the Mae Klong River, with cafes and old buildings to photograph; good for a mid-morning.
- Ratchaburi dragon jars — the town's signature craft; stop by a jar workshop and pick up souvenirs before you head back.
