The nice thing about Khon Kaen is that the main city sights sit very close together. Wat Nong Waeng is right on the edge of Bueng Kaen Nakhon, so you can walk straight from the temple to sit by the lake. The good food spots are scattered around the same area too — no need to drive out of town. This plan keeps travel to a minimum and stays easy and unhurried, perfect if you're stopping in Khon Kaen for a single day before moving on.
How to get around
Renting a car/motorbike is the most flexible — there's plenty of parking around the lake and at the temple · Grab/Bolt are easy to hail in Khon Kaen and not expensive, ideal if you'd rather not drive · Songthaew/city buses do run downtown but frequency is unreliable · If you stay near Bueng Kaen Nakhon or in the city center, you can comfortably walk between many of these stops.
Morning — Fuel up with khai krata
Khon Kaen is known for its breakfasts, especially a hot khai krata (eggs cooked in a little iron pan) with old-style coffee. Start the day with a hearty breakfast and you'll be more comfortable walking the temple afterward. Most of the famous breakfast spots in town open around 6:30am and get crowded between 8 and 9, so going early means less waiting.

Breakfast tips
The famous khai krata spots get busy on weekends, so if you'd rather not wait, going before 8am is best · Khon Kaen's khai krata usually comes with mu yo (Vietnamese pork sausage), Chinese sausage, and bread for dipping — a single set is enough to keep you full until lunch.

Late morning — Wat Nong Waeng & the 9-tier pagoda
The main anchor of the day is Wat Nong Waeng (a royal temple), a 200-year-old temple on the edge of Bueng Kaen Nakhon. Its highlight is Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon, a 9-tier pagoda with a square base 50 meters on each side. Each floor displays Buddha images, mural paintings, and stories from Buddhism, while the top floor enshrines Buddha relics and serves as a viewpoint over Bueng Kaen Nakhon and the city in every direction.

Good to know before you climb
The way up is by stairs, so wear shoes that slip off easily since some floors require you to take them off · Midday sun is harsh and the upper floors get hot, so it's best to climb in the late morning or come back around 16:30 when the light is nicer and it's cooler · Bring water up with you.
Lunch — Isan food by the lake
By the time you come down from the pagoda it's right about lunchtime. Restaurants line the edges of Bueng Kaen Nakhon from midday on, so grab some Isan food by the water to catch the breeze — som tam, grilled chicken, larb, koi, or fresh grilled fish suit the setting best. If you want something more serious, the city has several well-known restaurants to choose from.
