Khon Kaen With the Family
2 Days, Where to Take the Kids

Khon Kaen is an easier city to visit with kids than most people expect. There are real dinosaurs to get excited about, a park right in the middle of town where they can run around and pedal a swan boat, and a King Cobra Village the kids will be talking about for years. We've built this as a two-day plan that isn't packed so tight the kids melt down β€” it leaves room for breaks, room for meals, and orders the stops so you're not driving back and forth.

Khon Kaen With the Family 2 Days, Where to Take the Kids

πŸ”„ Updated 21 Jun 2026

Taking kids out of town comes down to two things: there has to be something that genuinely excites them, and you can't march them around until they're exhausted and in tears. Khon Kaen pulls off both. The city isn't big enough to get lost in, the main sights are spread around the edges within an hour and a half's drive, and there are spots where little kids and older kids can have fun at the same time.

This plan runs two days and one night, and it suits families driving their own car or renting one in Khon Kaen, since several stops sit outside town where public transport barely reaches. If you only have a single day, just grab Day 2 (the in-town one) and run with it.

Before you set off β€” what families should know

  • Renting a car pays off β€” Phu Wiang and the King Cobra Village are in opposite directions and both sit outside town. There's almost no direct public transport to either, so driving yourself or hiring a car with a driver is by far the smoothest option.
  • Stay in town β€” pick a hotel around Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake or near Central, so it's easy to come back to eat and rest. The kids get a full night's sleep before the next day.
  • Check the day of the week β€” the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum and the KKU Science Museum are both closed on Mondays. Don't put your dinosaur day on a Monday.
  • Pack for the kids β€” hats, drinking water, sunscreen and shoes they can run in, because a lot of the stops are outdoors and involve plenty of walking.

Day 1 β€” Phu Wiang, dinosaur country

Day one heads northwest out of the city to Wiang Kao district, about 85 km from town β€” roughly an hour and a half of driving. The main draw is the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum, one of Thailand's most important dinosaur fossil dig sites and the place that gave its name to Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae.

Day 1

Phu Wiang β€” real dinosaurs

08:00
Leave Khon Kaen city, heading for Wiang Kao districtHave breakfast at the hotel or grab something for the road. It's about 85 km, around 1.5 hours of driving β€” make a petrol-station bathroom stop for the kids first.
09:30
Arrive at the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Research and Museum CentreOpen Tue–Sun 09:30–16:30, closed Monday. Thai entry: 10 THB for children, 20 THB for adults. Foreigners: 30 for children, 60 for adults.
09:45
Walk through the dinosaur exhibits, the cast skeletons and the excavation pitThere are animatronic dinosaurs that kids love, the walking is easy, it's air-conditioned, and you'll spend about two hours here.
12:00
Lunch around Phu Wiang / Wiang Kao townThere are Γ  la carte spots and som tam restaurants in the town centre to choose from. You can order non-spicy dishes for the kids.
13:30
Stop at the outdoor dinosaur statues / Phu Wiang National Park (if the kids are up for it)If the little ones are already worn out, skip this one β€” heading straight back to town beats forcing it.
15:00
Drive back into Khon Kaen city, check in at the hotelLet the kids nap in the car. Once you're in town, freshen up before heading out for dinner.
18:00
Dinner by Bueng Kaen Nakhon lakeThere are restaurants and an evening market around the lake. Take a stroll in the breeze before bed.

Straight talk

Phu Wiang is farther than many people expect β€” the round trip eats up nearly half a day in the car. If you're travelling with kids who get carsick easily, pack motion-sickness medicine and some snacks, and don't cram other sights into the same day.

Day 2 β€” Bueng Kaen Nakhon, the cobra village, and around town

Day two is lighter, focused on spots in and near town. Start at Bueng Kaen Nakhon in the morning so the kids can run around and pedal a swan boat, then move on to the King Cobra Village in Nam Phong district β€” the highlight the kids will get most excited about β€” and finish at a science museum that's hands-on and built for touching.

Day 2

Bueng Kaen Nakhon β†’ Cobra Village β†’ Science Museum

08:30
Start the morning at Bueng Kaen Nakhon parkA 603-rai lake in the middle of the city with a running track, cycling path and playground. The morning air is still cool before it gets hot.
09:00
Pedal a swan boat on the lakeAbout 40 THB for 30 minutes. The kids love it and the adults get a workout. Have the kids wear a life vest if one's provided.
10:00
Head out to the King Cobra Village, Ban Khok Sa-nga, Nam Phong districtAbout 50 km from town, around an hour's drive.
11:00
Watch the king cobra show at Ban Khok Sa-ngaThere are several shows between 09:00–15:00, with snake theatre and a man-versus-snake 'boxing' act. Entry is by donation. Keep little ones close to an adult and sit toward the back in case they get startled.
12:30
Lunch on the way back into townPlenty of Isan restaurants, grilled chicken and roadside som tam stalls. Order an omelette or fried chicken for the kids.
14:00
Khon Kaen University Science MuseumOpen Tue–Sun 09:30–16:30, closed Monday. Thai entry: 10 THB for children, 30 for students, 50 for adults. Interactive exhibits the kids can press and try out.
16:30
Dessert / a cafΓ© to wrap up the trip, then homeFind a cafΓ© in town to rest at before the drive home, and let the kids have a sweet treat as a reward.

Tip

The King Cobra Village is a real performance by local villagers, not a theme park, so the show times can shift depending on the crowd. Call the community tourism group ahead to be sure, and don't forget to chip in a donation for the performers as a token of thanks.

Backup spots for kids β€” for rain, or when they're not done yet

Out of town

Khon Kaen Zoo

Out in Khao Suan Kwang district, a large area with plenty of animals to see β€” good if your kids love animals and are happy walking outdoors all day.

In town

Ton Tan Market / evening markets

Stroll and snack on street food, toys and desserts at friendly prices β€” a good way to close out the day without driving far.

Near the lake

Wat Nong Waeng, Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon

A 9-tier pagoda by Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake you can climb for city views β€” a chance to teach the kids about temples and culture along the way.

What to eat when you're with kids

Isan food is bold and spicy, and some kids find it hard going β€” but Khon Kaen always has a way out. Almost every Isan restaurant will do non-spicy dishes: fried chicken, omelettes, fried rice, grilled pork skewers. And the spots around Bueng Kaen Nakhon have relaxed seating with room for kids to move around without feeling boxed in.

  • Restaurants by Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake β€” many have semi-outdoor seating with lake views and plenty of space so the kids aren't stuck at the table, with both Isan and Γ  la carte menus.
  • Grilled chicken and som tam β€” Khon Kaen's signature dish. Order the grilled chicken non-spicy for the kids, and Thai-style som tam with just a little chilli is usually manageable.
  • Mu kratha / jim jum β€” a dinner where the kids get to grill their own, more fun than just sitting and eating. Restaurants are all over town.
  • Dessert cafΓ©s β€” wrap up the trip with toast, shaved ice or ice cream as a reward for kids who walked all day.

FAQ

How many days should I spend in Khon Kaen with kids?

Two days and one night is about right. Day one for the Phu Wiang dinosaurs out beyond town, day two for in-town fun and the King Cobra Village. If you only have one day, focus on Bueng Kaen Nakhon, the cobra village and the science museum, which are all close to the city.

Is the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum suitable for young kids?

Yes. There are cast skeletons, animatronic dinosaurs, and an air-conditioned indoor exhibition zone, so the walking is easy on kids. But it sits about 85 km from town and takes nearly half a day to get there and back, so pack motion-sickness medicine just in case.

Is the King Cobra Village dangerous if I bring kids?

The show is run by experienced handlers and there's a safe distance kept from the audience, but kids should sit with an adult, choose a back row in case they get startled, and never be allowed to walk up to the snake pens on their own.

How much is entry to the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum, and which days is it open?

For Thais it's 10 THB for children and 20 THB for adults; for foreigners it's 30 THB for children and 60 THB for adults. It's open Tue–Sun 09:30–16:30 and closed every Monday, so don't schedule your dinosaur day on a Monday.

Can I do this plan without a private car?

You can, but it's awkward β€” Phu Wiang and the cobra village are outside town with very little direct public transport. The smoothest options are renting a car and driving yourself, or hiring a car with a driver by the day, which is more worthwhile and flexible for a family.
