Khon Kaen University Science Museum
Real Hands-On Science for Kids

The Khon Kaen University Science Museum is a learning center where kids get to actually do things, not just look. They press, spin and test light, sound, electricity and magnets, then walk on to a dinosaur model and a natural-history hall. It sits in central Khon Kaen on the university campus, entry costs only a few baht, and the whole thing is indoors and air-conditioned, so it makes an easy morning-to-afternoon outing with children.

The Science Museum is part of Khon Kaen University's museum and lifelong-learning center, set on the campus a short drive from the city center. What parents tend to like is that kids can experiment with their own hands at almost every station: press a button and see the result, spin a wheel and feel the force, touch a panel and start to get electricity. It is learning that feels like play, and children barely notice they are learning. Just as handy, the whole route is indoors and air-conditioned, so a scorching day or a rainy afternoon is no problem.

Highlights for kids

The appeal here is that nearly every exhibit lets you try it rather than just read a sign, so kids stay engaged longer than at a typical museum. These are the zones children tend to love most.

  • Playful physics zone — light, sound, force and motion, with things to press, spin and drop so you see the result right away
  • Electricity and magnets — hands-on experiments that spark or make your hair stand up, a favorite with primary and secondary-age kids
  • Natural-history hall — dinosaur models, skeletons, the solar system and the story of how the Earth formed, the photo spot kids get most excited about
  • Isan wildlife and ecosystems — preserved animal specimens and study displays kids can look at up close (these are exhibits, not a live-animal show)
  • Indoors and cool — an all-day escape from heat or rain, a solid backup plan when the weather does not cooperate

When to bring kids and what to pack

The easiest time is a weekday morning after opening, when it is quieter and less likely to overlap with school field trips. Allow about 2-3 hours to wander. Wear comfortable shoes, and pack water and a snack to have on a bench outside the building. If your child is small, hold hands on the stairs and near the experiment stations, and everyone, kids and adults, will enjoy it more.

Know before you go

  • Opening hours — open Tuesday to Sunday, roughly 09:30–16:30, closed Mondays (there are occasional special evening exhibition nights, so check the museum's page or website before you travel)
  • Approximate entry — Science Museum only: about ฿10 for children, ฿30 for students, ฿50 for adults · combined ticket with the Natural History Museum: about ฿15 for children, ฿50 for students, ฿80 for adults (prices are approximate and may change, so confirm on arrival)
  • Getting there — it is on the Khon Kaen University campus, not far from the city center, and easy to reach by car, taxi or motorbike taxi, with parking available
  • Which ages — primary and secondary-age kids get the most out of the experiments, while toddlers and preschoolers enjoy the dinosaur models, though they will need an adult close by

Is it worth it, and a word on safety

At a few baht per ticket for 2-3 hours in air-conditioning, it is good value for a family outing. There is nothing unusual to worry about on safety, just keep an eye on small children on the stairs and at the experiment stations, and some experiments are more fun with an adult reading the instructions. Groups and schools can reserve a visit online in advance through the museum's booking system (reserve-museum.kku.ac.th) to secure a time slot and skip the queue.
