Koh Chang Itinerary 2 Days 1 Night

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Koh Chang sits in Trat province, about 5 hours' drive from Bangkok, followed by a ferry crossing of roughly 30–45 minutes. Its draws are the clear water off White Sand Beach on the west coast, the sea around Bang Bao on the south side where boats run out to small islands for snorkeling, and a forest waterfall that flows nearly year-round. This plan suits anyone with only 2 days who wants both the sea and some nature without rushing too much.

Before you go: the ferry and getting around the island

Drive or take a van from Bangkok to the ferry piers at Laem Ngop in Trat. There are two main piers — Center Point Pier and Ao Thammachat Pier. Boats run frequently throughout the daytime. The fare is about 80 THB per person, or roughly 120 THB per car if you bring your vehicle across, and the crossing takes around 30–45 minutes.

  • No private car — shared songthaew trucks run along the main road on the island. Fares start at around 70 THB per person per trip, and longer distances cost more.
  • Rent a motorbike — about 300 THB per day, the most flexible option for exploring on your own, but only if you're genuinely confident on a bike.
  • Rent a car / bring your own across — the most comfortable if you're traveling as a group or with kids, with no gambling on the sun or rain.

A warning about the island roads

The road around Koh Chang has sections that are very steep with hairpin bends, especially the stretch over the hill between Kai Bae Beach and Bang Bao. Motorbike accidents are common here from brakes failing on the descents. If you don't know the roads or it's raining and the surface is slick, take a songthaew or rent a car instead. Don't force a motorbike down those steep slopes.

Klong Plu Waterfall — entry fees and what to know

Klong Plu Waterfall flows nearly all year, dropping from a cliff around 30 m high into a pool below where you can swim. In the rainy season the water runs stronger and looks more dramatic; in the dry season it eases off but is still fine for a dip. The walk in is about 1 km along a rough path — not too hard, manageable for kids and older travelers, but shoes with good grip are safer.

  • Foreigner entry fee — around 200 THB for adults, 100 THB for children.
  • Thai entry fee — around 40 THB for adults, 20 THB for children.
  • One ticket covers two waterfalls — the Klong Plu ticket also gets you into Than Mayom Waterfall on the east side the same day.
  • Mornings are quieter — tours and Thai visitors tend to come in the afternoons and on weekends, so go on a weekday morning to avoid the crowds.

Snorkeling the nearby islands — always check the weather first

Snorkeling tours mainly leave from Bang Bao pier and take you to the small islands south of Koh Chang, where the water is clear and there's coral. But the sea here depends heavily on the weather — during monsoon season, roughly May to October, the wind and waves pick up, and many operators cancel trips or only run on certain days.

Being straight about low season

In the rainy season (around May–October) the sea off Bang Bao gets rough, and snorkeling tours may not run if the weather is bad. Some hotels, restaurants and dive shops on the island also close down during low season. If snorkeling is your main reason for coming, the calm-sea stretch with everything open is roughly November to April. Before you go, call ahead to check that your accommodation and tour are open and that boats are running that day.

Rough budget per person

  • Round-trip ferry — about 160 THB (80 THB per person each way, not including a vehicle).
  • Songthaew on the island — about 200–400 THB for the whole trip, depending on how many rides you take.
  • Island-hopping snorkel tour — about 500–900 THB depending on whether it's a big boat or a speedboat, including gear and lunch.
  • Klong Plu Waterfall entry — around 40 THB for Thais, around 200 THB for foreigners.
  • One night's accommodation — from guesthouses in the low hundreds to beachfront resorts in the thousands, depending on your budget.

FAQ

Is 2 days 1 night enough for Koh Chang?

It's enough to hit the main highlights — White Sand Beach, one snorkeling trip around the islands off Bang Bao, and Klong Plu Waterfall. But if you want to see several beaches without rushing, 3 days 2 nights is more relaxed.

How much is the ferry to Koh Chang?

The fare is about 80 THB per person each way, or roughly 120 THB per car if you bring your vehicle across. The crossing takes around 30–45 minutes, and boats run frequently throughout the daytime.

Can you swim at Klong Plu Waterfall year-round?

Yes. Klong Plu flows nearly all year — stronger and more dramatic in the rainy season, easing off in the dry season but still fine for a dip in the pool below. Entry is around 200 THB for foreigners and around 40 THB for Thais.

Should you rent a motorbike to get around Koh Chang?

If you ride well and it isn't the rainy season, it's flexible and convenient — rental is about 300 THB per day. But the island road has very steep sections and sharp hairpin bends where accidents are common. If you don't know the roads, take a songthaew or rent a car instead.

When is the best time to visit Koh Chang?

The calm-sea stretch with everything open is roughly November to April. During the rainy season, May to October, the wind and waves are strong — snorkeling tours may not run and some accommodation closes, so check before booking.
