What makes Koh Lipe special is the clear sea and coral sitting shallow enough to see without diving deep. A longtail snorkeling trip is something almost everyone who comes to Koh Lipe ends up trying. The boat loops between several snorkeling spots over a half day or full day, and each one has its own draw — some stand out for the coral, some for the schools of fish, and some for a pretty beach where you can hop off and walk around.
Koh Lipe sits inside Tarutao National Park in Satun province, so most snorkeling spots are around Koh Adang, Koh Rawi and the nearby rock pinnacles. The water is shallow, there are plenty of fish, and the reefs are in fairly good shape compared with many places in Thailand.
Inner zone vs outer zone — what's the difference
Koh Lipe snorkeling trips split into two main zones. Most tours let you pick which one to do, or combine both on a full-day trip.
- Inner zone — close to Koh Lipe, so the boat ride is short and the swell is gentler. Good for beginners and families with kids. The main spots are the Jabang Channel, Hin Ngam, Koh Yang, and the beaches of Koh Rawi and Koh Adang.
- Outer zone — the boat runs further out to spots like Koh Hin Son, Koh Dong, Koh Rok Loy and Koh Pung. The swell is stronger but the snorkeling spots are quieter, with more varied coral and fish. Better for confident swimmers who want to dodge the crowds.
- Combined / 8 islands trip — covers the highlights of both zones in one day and takes most of the day. Good if you only have one day and want to fit in as much as possible.
How to choose a zone
If it's your first time or you're bringing kids, start with the inner zone — the swell is gentler and the snorkeling spots are shallow and easy. If you're staying several days, add the outer zone on a later day.

3 highlights you shouldn't skip
Jabang Channel
The most talked-about snorkeling spot on Koh Lipe. It's a channel between small islets, with purple-red soft coral clinging to the rock walls. When the water is clear and the sun is out the colors really pop, and plenty of fish pass through. There's no beach here — you slip into the water from the boat and swim along behind the guide.
Koh Hin Ngam
A beach paved with smooth, dark, round stones that turn glossy when the water washes over them. It's a photo and rest stop where you hop off to walk around. Local legend says the spirit of Tarutao curses anyone who takes a stone home — believe it or not, park rules forbid taking stones anyway.
Koh Yang
A small island with clear water, shallow staghorn coral and schools of small fish moving together. It's relaxed snorkeling because the water is calm and shallow, and you can see the white sandy bottom clearly. A lot of people love this spot because the fish come right up close.

Inner zone snorkeling by longtail
The half-day trip takes about 3–4 hours, good if you're short on time or want to keep the afternoon free for relaxing on the beach.

Koh Lipe snorkeling prices (approximate)
The prices below are a general range from operators on the island. The real price depends on the season, the number of people and what's included, so check with the shop again before booking.
- Group trip, inner zone — around 650–750 THB per person (gear and life jacket included, with lunch usually included on the longer trips)
- Group trip, outer zone — around 750–850 THB per person
- Private longtail charter, inner zone — around 1,900–2,500 THB per boat (1–7 people), depending on the group size
- Private longtail charter, both zones combined — around 2,700–3,500 THB per boat
- Charters usually add food, gear and drinking water — about 250 THB per person extra
Tarutao National Park fee (paid separately)
The snorkeling spots are inside the national park, so there's an entry fee on top. It's 40 THB for Thai adults and 20 THB for children, 200 THB for foreign adults and 100 THB for children. Most tours don't include this in the price, so set aside some cash separately.
When to go, and a word on safety
Koh Lipe opens by season — you can't visit year-round. During the monsoon, roughly May to October, the sea is rough with big waves, many boat operators stop running, and a lot of accommodation and shops close. At times the ferries to and from the mainland are cancelled because of the swell. The best window is November to April, when the sea is calm, the water is clear and you can see the coral well.
- Check the weather forecast and wave conditions before every boat trip — if the swell is unusually strong, don't push it
- Wear a life jacket the whole time you're in the water, even if you can swim, because the current is strong at some spots
- Stay close to the guide and the group, and don't swim off far on your own
- Use reef-safe sunscreen — some sunscreens damage the coral
- If you get seasick easily, bring medication, especially on outer-zone trips where the boat runs further out
Help protect the Koh Lipe sea
Don't touch, step on or take coral and shells, don't take stones from Hin Ngam beach, and carry every piece of trash back to dispose of on the island. Water this clear only stays that way if everyone pitches in.
Getting ready before the trip
Book ahead or book on the island
It's busy in high season, so you can book ahead at your accommodation or at the tour shops on Walking Street. Prices on the island tend to be similar, so it's fine to compare two or three shops first.
What to bring
Wear your swimwear from your accommodation, and bring a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, cash for the park fee and a waterproof pouch for your phone.
Island prices run higher than the mainland
Food and supplies on Koh Lipe cost noticeably more than on the mainland because everything has to be shipped over, so budget for it. You can bring some drinking water and snacks over from the mainland.
