Ao Kao Beach sits on the southwest side of Koh Mak — a long, gently shelving stretch of sand with calm water, and crucially, it faces straight into the sunset. Most of the island's restaurants and bars are clustered along the road that runs behind this beach, so one walk turns up plenty of options. Around 5:00–6:30 PM is the golden hour, when the whole beach turns to face the sea at the same time.

Read first — the real deal on Koh Mak

Koh Mak is a small island that takes a while to reach, with limited shops and services, and prices that run noticeably higher than on the mainland because everything has to come over by boat. Bring enough cash. ATMs on the island are few and often run dry, and many places take cash only. During the monsoon (May–Oct) there's plenty of rain and rough seas, some boats stop running, and a lot of resorts and bars close for a long stretch — check that the place you want to visit is open before you travel.

10 beach bars and spots we picked

We've ordered them starting with the quiet, easygoing spots best for watching the sunset, then worked up to the ones with live music and a bit more buzz. Prices are rough estimates from reviews and can shift depending on when you go.

Timing the sunset right

Ao Kao faces west, with the sun going down around 6:00–6:40 PM depending on the season. Grab a seat right by the sand by about 5:00 PM for the best angle — that's also happy hour at many places, so your first drink works out cheaper.

Traveling mindfully on Koh Mak

  • Pack out your trash — Koh Mak positions itself as a low-carbon island, and waste is hard to deal with because it all has to be hauled back to the mainland. Bring your own bag for bottles and straws and take them with you.
  • Drink in moderation, ride safely — the roads here are narrow and poorly lit, the nights are dark, and animals cross the road. If you've been drinking, walking or handing the keys to a friend is the safer call.
  • Respect the quiet — Koh Mak's charm is its calm. Keep the volume down, ease off the flash, and let the whole beach enjoy the sunset together.
  • Support local shops — prices on the island run high because of transport costs, and paying full price at the small places is what keeps the island alive into the next season.

Money and seasons

ATMs on the island are few and often run dry, and some won't take foreign cards — withdraw enough cash before you cross over. If you plan to dive or take a boat trip around the islands, check the weather first: during the monsoon (May–Oct) the seas are rough and tours may be canceled.

FAQ

Where on Koh Mak can you sit and watch the sunset from a beach bar?

Most are along the road behind Ao Kao Beach on the west side of the island, which faces straight into the sunset — places like Ao Kao Beach Club, By The Sea, and Cha Cha Beach Club. Another spot with a westward view is the Ao Suan Yai side, with I-Talay and the over-water Blue Pearl bar.

Roughly how much do drinks cost at bars on Koh Mak?

Most drinks run around ฿80–250 depending on the place and what you order — beer and fruit shakes are cheaper, cocktails more. Prices on the island are higher than on the mainland because of transport costs, so bring enough cash, as many places don't take cards.

Does Koh Mak have a late-night party scene?

Koh Mak leans far more toward quiet than party. Most bars close around midnight, with easy live music rather than loud clubs. Even the liveliest spot, Sips, is still mellow compared with the bigger islands. If you really want a quiet seat, go early in the evening before the music gets loud.

When's the best time to visit Koh Mak — are the bars open all year?

The best time is around Nov–Apr, when the sea is calm and the weather is good. During the monsoon (May–Oct) there's plenty of rain and rough seas, some boats stop running, and many resorts and bars close for a long stretch. If you go in monsoon season, check with the bars and your accommodation that they're open.

Anything special to prepare before hitting the beach bars on Koh Mak?

Bring enough cash, since ATMs on the island are few and often run dry. Pack a light layer for breezy evenings, and bring your own bag to carry your trash back out — Koh Mak positions itself as a low-carbon island where waste is hard to deal with.
