About — Koh Mak

Koh Mak is a small island in Trat province, sitting between Koh Chang and Koh Kood. It's peaceful and fairly flat, so you can easily get around by bicycle or motorbike, and it's known for its low-carbon, eco-conscious approach to tourism. People come to Koh Mak to slow down and relax — there's no busy nightlife here.

The main beaches are Ao Kao on the south side, with shallow clear water, white sand, and lovely sunsets, and Ao Suan Yai on the north side, which is longer and quieter. Another highlight is taking a boat out to snorkel at nearby Koh Kham and the clear waters of Koh Rang. If you like simple island life — cycling past coconut and rubber plantations and falling asleep to the sound of the waves — Koh Mak is a great fit. Honesty: Koh Mak is a long trip to reach, and many places close during the May–October monsoon. Things cost more on the island than on the mainland, and shops and services are limited, so bring your essentials and cash.

Best time: November–April, when the sea is clear and calm — best for swimming, snorkeling, and cycling, and the island is fully open. May–October is monsoon season with rough seas, when many guesthouses and boats close.
