Thalang Road, Dibuk Road, and Soi Romanee are lined with pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, full of cafes, old eateries, and souvenir shops. Good for a full day of photos and snacking.
The island's busiest beach and main tourist area, with hotels, restaurants, and Bangla Road buzzing at night. This is where the most foreign visitors gather.
Two long white-sand beaches south of Patong, more relaxed, with clear water that's good for swimming and surfing when the swell picks up. The Karon Viewpoint is nearby for a photo stop.
A large white Buddha statue on Nakkerd Hill, visible from many parts of the island. Head up to pay respects and take in sea views over both Chalong Bay and Kata Beach.
The cape at the island's southern tip and a popular sunset spot. In the evening, crowds gather across the viewing area to watch the sun drop into the Andaman Sea.
Boats run from the piers to Phi Phi, Coral (Hae) Island, Maiton Island, and Phang Nga Bay on a single-day trip — snorkeling over coral and kayaking among the limestone karsts.

Phuket's signature food — real local spots, rounded up and ranked
Yellow egg noodles, stir-fried or blanched and topped with thick broth, with pork, shrimp, and vegetables. A local Hokkien dish you'll find at the old eateries in the old town.
Oh tao is oysters fried with batter and taro, crisp outside and soft inside, a popular old-town snack eaten alongside dumplings and morning dim sum.
Sea on every side means fresh shrimp, shellfish, crab, fish, and lobster. Seafood spots on the beach and in town do it grilled, steamed with lime, stir-fried with curry powder, or in tom yum.
Gaeng tai pla, yellow curry, khua kling, and stir-fried stink beans with shrimp, eaten with hot rice and fresh raw vegetables. A local meal you'll find all over the island.
Phuket has an old Chinese community, and dim sum shops open early with steamed buns, har gow, and dumplings, eaten with old-style coffee or hot tea — a local breakfast.
Roti and pulled-tea shops open from morning until late. The roti is crisp outside and soft inside, eaten with curry or drizzled with milk, washed down with hot pulled tea. Found in town and along the beach.
Many Sino-Portuguese shophouses have turned into cafes serving fresh coffee with local sweets to linger over — an easy stop for a coffee while wandering the old town.
The Lard Yai walking street on weekends and the town markets have street food, local Hokkien snacks, and grilled seafood to graze on.
