Phuket–Phang Nga 3-Day Plan
Khao Lak + Phang Nga Bay

Phuket and Phang Nga sit right next to each other — just over an hour by car — but they feel like two different worlds. Phuket has everything; Phang Nga is all quiet sea and the famous limestone karsts rising out of the bay. This plan starts in Phuket, drives up to Khao Lak for a slow night by the water, then heads out on a boat the next morning to explore Phang Nga Bay, James Bond Island, and Koh Panyee before looping back. It's laid out in day-by-day blocks with times so you can just follow along.

Phuket–Phang Nga 3-Day Plan Khao Lak + Phang Nga Bay

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

If you've been in Phuket a while and the town beaches are starting to feel crowded, head north into Phang Nga. Khao Lak is about an hour and a half to two hours from Phuket town — a long stretch of coast that's quieter, with fewer people, perfect for slowing down. And Phang Nga Bay is the highlight everyone knows: limestone mountains in the middle of the water, James Bond Island, and a stilt village out at sea called Koh Panyee. This 3-day plan strings the two together without rushing.

What this plan looks like

The key to this plan is "spend one night in Khao Lak" so you're not driving Phuket–Phang Nga and back in a single exhausting day. Day one covers Phuket in the morning, then an easy drive up to Khao Lak. Day two is a full day on the boat through Phang Nga Bay. Day three is a relaxed morning around Khao Lak before looping back to Phuket. It works great if you've rented a car, but if you're not driving, shared vans and pickup tours cover all of it too.

  • Day 1 — Morning in Phuket, afternoon drive up to Khao Lak, check in by the beach, catch the sunset
  • Day 2 — Full day on the Phang Nga Bay tour: James Bond Island, Khao Phing Kan, Koh Panyee, sea-cave canoeing
  • Day 3 — Easy morning around Khao Lak — tsunami memorial, waterfalls — then drive back to Phuket

Before you set off

If you've rented a car, fill up the tank before leaving Phuket — along the bypass highway and Sarasin Bridge route up to Khao Lak, gas stations are spaced fairly far apart. Check your tires and brakes too, since there are some winding climbs along the way.

Day 1 — Morning in Phuket, then drive up to Khao Lak

Day 1

From Phuket to Khao Lak

08:30
Have a proper breakfast in Phuket townDim sum or kopi in the old town before you head out, since there are fewer places to stop along the road up to Khao Lak.
10:00
Tick off one Phuket spot first — swing by Thalang Road in the old town, or a small viewpointDon't go hard today — save your energy for the boat tomorrow.
11:30
Set off for Khao Lak, crossing Sarasin Bridge into Phang NgaIt's about 80–90 km and takes 1.5–2 hours of driving. If you're not driving yourself, shared vans start around 250–300 THB/person, or a private taxi/van runs about 1,500–2,000 THB.
13:30
Arrive in Khao Lak, grab lunch around Bang NiangThe Bang Niang–La On area is the hub for restaurants and accommodation in Khao Lak, with both seafood and southern Thai food.
15:00
Check in at a beachfront place in Khao Lak, drop your bags and go for a swimThe Bang Niang–Nang Thong beach zone has fine sand and isn't crowded — great for a long, lazy afternoon.
18:00
Watch the sunset on Khao Lak beachKhao Lak faces the Andaman Sea to the west, so the evening sky is lovely almost every day in the dry season.
19:30
Seafood dinner around Bang NiangPick a place with a chilled display of fresh catch you can look over before ordering. Asking the price per kilo before they weigh it is the safest move.

On where to stay in Khao Lak

Khao Lak has beachfront resorts at every level, from boutique stays like Devasom Khao Lak and The Sands Khao Lak by Katathani to La Flora Khao Lak. In high season (Nov–Apr), sea-view rooms book up fast, so reserving ahead usually gets you a better rate.

Day 2 — Full day in Phang Nga Bay: James Bond Island & Koh Panyee

Today is the highlight of the trip. Phang Nga Bay tours leave from piers around Mueang Phang Nga district (the Customs Pier / Surakul Pier), about an hour's drive down from Khao Lak. Booking a tour with transfers included is far easier, since you won't have to find parking yourself.

Day 2

A full day on Phang Nga Bay

07:30
Breakfast at the hotel, then get ready for the boatWear shoes that can get wet, shorts, sunglasses, and waterproof sunscreen, and bring a dry bag for your phone.
08:30
Pickup from Khao Lak to the Phang Nga pierIf you booked a tour with hotel transfers, just wait at the meeting point — most tours note your hotel when you book.
09:30
Board the boat into Phang Nga Bay — the first stop is usually a sea cave or a limestone karst out on the waterPhang Nga Bay is full of oddly shaped limestone mountains, and you can pass through rock tunnels at low tide.
10:30
Khao Phing Kan + James Bond Island (Khao Ta Pu)Khao Ta Pu is the rock pillar in the water made famous by the James Bond film. You can walk onto the island for photos — it gets busy by mid-morning, so going early is quieter.
12:00
Sea kayaking through caves to see the mangrovesMany tours have a paddler do the work for you. You glide through a cave into a "room" inside the rock that's open at the top — a highlight a lot of people love most.
13:00
Lunch at Koh Panyee, a Muslim village built over the waterKoh Panyee is a village built on stilts over the sea, with restaurants, souvenir shops, and its famous floating football pitch. Most tours include lunch here.
15:00
Swim or take in the view at the last stop before heading back to shoreSome tours stop at a nearby island for a swim — it depends on the program you booked.
16:30
Back at the pier, then a transfer back to Khao LakYou'll reach your hotel around evening — rest, shower, then grab a light dinner.

Which Phang Nga Bay tour to pick

Phang Nga Bay tours come in two main types — longtail boats, which are slower but have more atmosphere and fewer people, and speedboats, which are faster and cover more stops in a day. Tours including transfers, food, and gear usually start around 1,200–1,800 THB/person, while chartering a private longtail starts from about 2,300 THB per boat. Check whether the national park fee is included before you book.

Day 3 — Easy morning in Khao Lak, then loop back to Phuket

Day 3

One more morning in Khao Lak before heading back

08:00
Easy breakfast, pack up, late check-outKhao Lak is a place for sleeping in — no rush, since today is just the drive back to Phuket.
10:00
Stop at the tsunami memorial, Police Boat T.813 in Bang NiangA 60-ton patrol boat that the 2004 tsunami carried about 2 km inland, now kept as a memorial. Free to visit and a worthwhile stop for the history.
11:00
Visit a tsunami museum/learning center, or a nearby waterfallIf you like nature, there are waterfalls in the Takua Pa area, such as Ton Chong Fa, where you can stop for a short walk.
12:30
Lunch at a southern Thai restaurant around Takua Pa/Bang NiangTry bold southern dishes like gaeng tai pla, stir-fried sator, and kua kling before you head back.
14:00
Set off back to PhuketIt's 1.5–2 hours of driving. If you're flying out today, allow at least 2.5 hours to reach Phuket airport before your flight.
16:00
Arrive in Phuket — return the rental car / head to your hotel / go to the airportIf you've still got time, stop for something good in Phuket old town as a last meal to close out the trip.

Adjust the plan to your own style

Short on time

Only 2 days

Cut the easy Khao Lak day. Spend one night in Khao Lak, do the Phang Nga Bay tour on the morning of day 2, then loop back to Phuket the same evening.

Day trip

Don't want to stay overnight

Do Phang Nga Bay as a day trip straight from Phuket — tours pick up and drop off at your Phuket hotel, out in the morning and back in the evening, no packing up.

Long & easy

Want to fully chill

Stretch it to 4 days, stay two nights in Khao Lak, and add a day to relax by the pool/spa, or carry on to dive the Similan Islands (seasonal).

When to go

The Andaman side has a monsoon season — from May to October there's a lot of rain and rough seas, and boat tours are cancelled on some days. The travel season is Nov–Apr, when the sea is calm and the sky is clear — the best time to get out on a boat. If you're planning to dive the Similans, check ahead, as the park is only open around October to May.
