Koh Phangan
Parties, Quiet Beaches & Diving

Koh Phangan has two faces on one island. One side is Haad Rin, known around the world for the Full Moon Party. The other is the quiet northern coast like Thong Nai Pan and Bottle Beach, calm enough to hear the waves. We've pulled the parties, the peaceful beaches, the dive sites, and the real travel routes into one guide.

Koh Phangan sits in the Gulf of Thailand, within Koh Phangan district of Surat Thani province, flanked by Koh Samui to the south and Koh Tao to the north. Most people know it for the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin, but more than half the island is actually forested hills and quiet beaches that roads still can't even reach. Plan it well and you can get both a night of partying and days of total quiet in a single trip.

Haad Rin and the Full Moon Party

Haad Rin sits on the headland at the southern tip of the island, split into Haad Rin Nok, the party stage, and the quieter Haad Rin Nai, which is better for swimming. The Full Moon Party runs every month on the night of the full moon, kicking off around 9 PM and going until morning. Tens of thousands of people show up, climbing to around 40,000 over New Year.

  • Entry ฿200 — paid in cash at the beach entrance, you get a wristband for in-and-out access all night.
  • 2026 dates shift around major Buddhist holy days — if the full moon falls on an important holy day, the party moves to the following night, so check the exact date on fullmoonpartythailand.com before booking.
  • There are smaller parties too — Half Moon, Black Moon, and Jungle Experience run in the island's interior on alternating nights all month, so you're not out of luck if you miss the full moon.
  • Haad Rin fills up fast — rooms spike in price and sell out on party nights, so many people stay on other beaches and take a taxi or boat in.

Before you head to the party

The road down to Haad Rin is steep and traffic is heavy on party nights, so leave extra time. Lock valuables at your place and carry only the cash you'll use. There's broken glass in the sand, so keep shoes on. And watch the bucket drinks, which are mixed stronger than you'd expect.

Quiet beaches on the north and west coasts

If you're coming to Koh Phangan to actually relax, skip Haad Rin and head to the north coast. The beaches up here are far quieter and the water clearer. Some can only be reached by boat or by riding a motorbike up steep hills, and that hard access is exactly what keeps them quiet.

North coast

Thong Nai Pan

A twin bay on the northeast coast with fine white sand, a long beach, and barely any crowds. Good for couples and families, with some solid resorts and a fair number of restaurants.

Hard to reach

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat)

A small curved beach ringed by forest, reachable only by boat or on foot. It's the quietest spot on the island, ideal if you really want to get away from people.

West coast

Haad Salad

A west-coast beach with shallow, clear water and calm surf, good for young kids and anyone after quiet. The road down is steep but worth it.

Snorkeling

Mae Haad + Koh Ma

A sandbar connects to Koh Ma, a small island just offshore, and you can walk across at low tide and snorkel the coral right there. It gets busy by day in high season.

Dive sites around the island

Koh Phangan makes a great base for dive trips because it sits right between the top dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand, with everything from deep scuba dives to shore snorkeling on offer.

1

Sail Rock (Hin Bai)

Deep dive · ~45 min by boat from Thong Sala

A granite pinnacle in the open sea between Phangan and Koh Tao, widely considered the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand. The highlight is The Chimney, a vertical swim-through from 18 meters up to 6 meters, and it has the highest whale shark odds in the Gulf.

2

Chumphon Pinnacle

Deep dive · Koh Tao side

A large pinnacle starting around 14 meters and dropping past 35 meters, known for dense schools of fish — batfish, mackerel, and snapper — with a chance of whale sharks from April to June.

3

Koh Ma

Snorkeling · walk from Mae Haad

Shore snorkeling off Mae Haad beach with shallow, easy-to-see coral. Good for beginners and families, with no long boat ride needed.

4

Secret Rock

Deep dive · paired with Sail Rock

A small pinnacle near Sail Rock, good to add on in the same trip, with moray eels and bright soft coral.

Best time to dive

Underwater visibility is best and whale shark odds highest from March to May, with a second window from August to October. You can dive year-round, but the late-year monsoon brings rough seas and boats may not run, so check with the dive shop first.

What to do beyond the beach

  • Phaeng Waterfall — inside the national park in the island's interior. Hike up to the Domsila viewpoint for a view across to Koh Samui.
  • Khao Ra viewpoint — ride a motorbike up to catch sunset over the bay, with views of both Thong Sala and the sea.
  • Yoga and retreats — the Srithanu area is full of yoga, detox, and meditation centers, a side of the island many people don't know about.
  • Thong Sala Walking Street — a market that runs some evenings, with southern Thai food, seafood, and souvenirs to graze on.

How to get to Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan has no airport, so you always arrive by boat, with most ferries docking at Thong Sala Pier. The most popular route runs through Surat Thani's Donsak ferry terminal.

1

Donsak → Thong Sala

Ferry / speedboat · ~1.5–2.5 hrs

The main route from the mainland, with Raja Ferry, Seatran, and Lomprayah running several times a day. Raja and Seatran take about 2.5 hours; the Lomprayah speedboat is around 1.5 hours. Good if you connect by coach or train into Surat Thani.

2

Koh Samui → Thong Sala

Speedboat · ~30–45 min

If you fly into Samui Airport first and then catch a boat to Phangan, it's only about 30–45 minutes. It's the fastest option once you factor in total travel time.

FastestVia Samui
3

Koh Tao → Thong Sala

Speedboat · ~1 hr

For island-hoppers, the Lomprayah speedboat runs between Tao, Phangan, and Samui daily, taking about an hour from Koh Tao.

Train / coach + ferry (combined ticket)

Combined ticket · overnight on the road

From Bangkok you can buy a combined bus-plus-ferry ticket straight through to Phangan. Take a train or coach down to Surat Thani, then a transfer carries you to the pier. It's convenient but the whole trip takes an overnight.

Getting around the island

Renting a motorbike is the popular choice, but many stretches of road are steep and slippery, especially down to Haad Rin and Haad Salad. If you're not a confident rider, use a songthaew taxi or a taxi boat for the harder-to-reach beaches, like Bottle Beach, which is mainly reached by boat.

FAQ

When is the Koh Phangan Full Moon Party and how much is entry?

It runs every month on the night of the full moon at Haad Rin, starting around 9 PM and going until morning. Entry is 200 baht, paid in cash at the beach entrance. In 2026 some months shift the date because the full moon falls on a major Buddhist holy day, so check the exact date on fullmoonpartythailand.com before booking your trip.

How do you get to Koh Phangan, and is there an airport?

Koh Phangan has no airport, so you always arrive by boat at Thong Sala Pier. The main route is from Surat Thani's Donsak terminal (Raja or Seatran ferries take about 2.5 hours, or the Lomprayah speedboat about 1.5 hours), or you can fly into Samui Airport and catch a boat 30–45 minutes on.

I want a quiet Koh Phangan trip without the party — which beaches?

Skip Haad Rin and head to the north coast. Thong Nai Pan is quiet and pretty, great for relaxing. Bottle Beach is the most peaceful but you have to arrive by boat or on foot. On the west coast, Haad Salad has shallow, calm water that's good for families.

Where's the best diving on Koh Phangan, and when do you see whale sharks?

The standout is Sail Rock, the best site in the Gulf of Thailand and where whale sharks turn up most often, followed by Chumphon Pinnacle. The best whale shark windows are March to May and August to October. For snorkeling, head to Koh Ma off Mae Haad beach.

How many nights do you need for Koh Phangan to be worth it?

If you're only here for the Full Moon Party, 2 nights is enough. But if you want the party, quiet beaches, and diving, 3–4 nights is the sweet spot — that leaves a full day for a Sail Rock dive trip and time for the northern beaches, which take a while to get to.
