Krabi–Trang 3 Days
Islands and the Emerald Cave

If you've made it to Krabi and want more than the famous sandbar swim, this plan takes you south across the provincial line to Trang, just a two-hour van ride away. Day one warms up in Ao Nang, day two crosses to Trang for the Emerald Cave–Koh Kradan–Koh Ngai island tour, where the beaches and water are clearer than much of the Krabi side, and day three covers Trang town and its legendary morning roast pork. We've added rough timings, real 2026 prices, and places you can actually eat, so you can plan a two-province trip in one go without the confusion.

Krabi–Trang 3 Days Islands and the Emerald Cave

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Krabi and Trang are neighbors on the Andaman coast, about two hours apart by car or van. Most people fly into Krabi airport (more flights land there), then shift south to Trang. So this 3-day, 2-night plan puts your first base in Krabi, moves you to Trang or onto an island for the second night, and lets you fly home from either Krabi or Trang airport — whichever has the better fare.

Before you go

The Emerald Cave and the Trang islands sit inside Hat Chao Mai National Park, which closes during monsoon season (usually around 16 May–15 Oct). The Trang sea is at its best from Nov–Apr. If you're planning a rainy-season trip, check with your tour operator first to confirm the islands are open, and book the Emerald Cave tour 1–2 days ahead because morning slots fill fast.

Day 1 — Ao Nang, warming up on the Krabi side

No need to rush across the line on day one. Use Krabi as your base first: check in at Ao Nang, stroll the beachfront, then take an afternoon longtail across to Railay and Phra Nang Cave — a headland that roads can't reach, so the only way in is by boat. Soak up Krabi's classic limestone-cliff scenery first; you'll meet Trang's clear water tomorrow.

Day 1

Arrive Krabi to Ao Nang–Railay

11:00
Arrive Krabi airport, transfer to Ao NangA taxi or minibus into Ao Nang runs about 150–300 THB per person and takes roughly 30–40 min.
12:30
Check in around Ao NangStaying along the main Ao Nang strip puts you within walking distance of the beach, restaurants, and the pier — handy if you're moving down to Trang tomorrow.
13:00
Lunch along Ao Nang roadSeafood and made-to-order spots line the whole strip. Try tom yum goong, fried sea bass, or duck into a dim sum shop open from morning to evening.
14:30
Longtail from Ao Nang beach to RailayAn Ao Nang–Railay longtail is about 100 THB one way, 200 THB round trip. Boats leave once they're full and take around 15 min.
15:00
Wander Railay West, on to Phra Nang CaveWalk along the cliff for about 10 min to reach Phra Nang Cave — white sand, clear water, and a local shrine where people come to pay respects. No entry fee.
17:30
Longtail back to Ao Nang for sunsetEvening boats sometimes take longer to fill, so leave a buffer. The light this time of day is great for shooting the cliffs as dark silhouettes against the sky.
19:00
Seafood dinner on the Ao Nang beachfrontTry sea snails, steamed blue crab, and grilled prawns — order by the kilo and share to get better value. Bank some energy; you're up early to cross provinces tomorrow.

Crossing over: Krabi → Trang

This is the heart of the plan. A lot of people worry that crossing provinces will be a hassle — it's easier than it sounds. Krabi and Trang have vans and minibuses running direct every hour during the day, leaving Krabi bus station (or pickup points in town) for Trang's new bus station, about a two-hour ride.

  • Krabi–Trang van / minibus — from about 240–300 THB per person, departing hourly between 06:00–17:00, around 2 hours. Book ahead through an app like 12Go or buy at the station.
  • Private car / taxi charter — about 1,800–2,500 THB per car, good for families or groups of 4+. More flexible on timing and you can stop for photos along the way.
  • Self-drive rental — the main route is mostly 4-lane highway and easy to drive. If you want to do both provinces on your own schedule, rent in Krabi and drop off in Trang town or at Trang airport.
  • Which pier to use — most Trang island tours leave from Pak Meng pier in Sikao district or Kuan Tung Ku pier. Operators usually include pickup from your hotel in Trang town or Pak Meng.

Get the timing right

If you want to do the Emerald Cave tour on day two, take the earliest van out of Krabi (around 06:00–07:00), or stay the night before in Pak Meng or Trang town and head out at first light. That's far easier than riding over and rushing onto a boat the same day, since island tours leave around 09:00–10:00.

Day 2 — Emerald Cave, Koh Kradan, Koh Ngai

The highlight of the trip is today. The classic Trang island tour loops through the Emerald Cave at Koh Mook, Koh Kradan (known for the clearest water and prettiest beach in the Trang sea), Koh Ngai, and snorkel spots like Koh Cheuk. The Emerald Cave is the real deal: you swim and float through about 80 meters of pitch-dark cave, then come out at a hidden beach in the middle of the island where the water glows emerald green. The tour includes lunch and snorkeling gear.

Day 2

Emerald Cave tour + Trang islands

07:00
Breakfast at your hotel / pack for the boatWear your swimsuit from the hotel and bring only the essentials. A waterproof camera or phone pouch helps a lot in the Emerald Cave.
08:30
Tour pickup to Pak Meng pierMost join-in tours include hotel pickup and drop-off in Trang town and Pak Meng. Confirm your pickup time with the operator the night before.
09:30
Speedboat out from Pak MengPak Meng to Koh Mook takes about 30–40 min. The sea is calm in high season; if you get seasick, take medicine before boarding.
10:30
Highlight: float-swim into the Emerald CaveYou'll wear a life jacket and follow a rope through about 80 meters of dark cave. It's completely dark for a stretch before you come out at the hidden beach. The guide sets the pace — follow instructions closely.
12:00
Lunch on Koh Kradan (included in the tour)Koh Kradan has fine white sand and water so clear you can see the bottom, with a reef just a few meters offshore. Plenty of people say it beats the Krabi side.
13:30
Snorkeling over the reef at Koh CheukKoh Cheuk is a snorkel spot with colorful coral and lots of fish. There's no beach to land on — you snorkel from the boat. Be careful not to step on the coral.
15:00
Swim stop / beach rest at Koh NgaiKoh Ngai (Koh Hai) has a long beach and clear water, a relaxing final stop before heading back. Some programs give you a longer swim here.
16:30
Back at Pak Meng, transfer to your hotelIf you've booked a stay on Koh Kradan or Koh Ngai, you'll split off and overnight on the island instead of returning to the mainland — ideal if you want to wake up to a quiet beach.
19:00
Dinner in Trang town or Pak MengIf you're staying in Trang town, try the punchy southern Thai food, or save your energy for the legendary roast pork breakfast tomorrow morning.

Straight talk on the Emerald Cave

The Emerald Cave really is beautiful, but in high season it gets very crowded, and at points you'll queue in a long line to swim into the cave. There's a stretch that's pitch black — if you're afraid of tight or dark spaces, prepare yourself or tell the guide. Non-swimmers don't need to worry too much, since you wear a life jacket and have a rope to hold, but always stay with the group and don't push it if the waves are rough.

Day 3 — Trang town, roast pork and dim sum

The last day is for Trang town, a serious food town. It's famous for crispy-skin roast pork and a morning dim sum culture eaten with kopi, rooted in the local Hokkien Chinese community. Get up a little early to eat breakfast the way Trang locals do, wander the old town, then head home.

Day 3

Trang breakfast, then head home

06:30
Roast pork & dim sum breakfastMany Trang roast pork shops open from around 5:30 am. Try Trang Moo Yang or Moo Yang Ko Kae, which has carried its recipe for over 40 years — crispy-skin roast pork with dim sum and kopi-o.
08:30
Wander Trang old town / morning marketTrang has Sino-European old buildings, cafes, and Trang sponge cake shops for souvenirs. A relaxed morning to soak up the atmosphere.
10:30
Pick up souvenirs (Trang cake, vacuum-packed roast pork)Trang cake is soft with a hole in the middle, the province's signature gift. Many roast pork shops vacuum-pack portions to carry home.
12:00
Southern Thai lunch before you goTry a punchy southern curry-rice plate, gaeng tai pla, or khanom jeen with crab curry — finishing the trip on real southern flavors.
13:30
Head homeYou can fly out straight from Trang airport (there are flights to Bangkok), or if your return ticket is from Krabi, take the van back — about 2 hours. Leave at least 3 hours before your flight.

Rough budget to plan for

  • Emerald Cave + 3–4 Trang islands (join-in tour) — speedboat from about 890–1,200 THB per person, including lunch, snorkeling gear, and pickup/drop-off in Trang town or Pak Meng.
  • Hat Chao Mai National Park fee — about 60 THB for Thais, around 200 THB for foreigners (paid on top of the tour price on site; may change per park notice).
  • Krabi–Trang van — about 240–300 THB per person, or charter a car for about 1,800–2,500 THB.
  • Ao Nang–Railay longtail (day one) — about 100 THB one way, 200 THB round trip.
  • Meals — roast pork + dim sum breakfast around 100–200 THB per person; seafood or a big shared meal around 300–500 THB per person.
  • Stays on Koh Kradan / Koh Ngai — island resorts cost more than the mainland, from about 1,500–4,000 THB per night depending on level. Book ahead in high season.

Straight talk

The very cheapest Trang island tours tend to pack the boat full and rush the loop. If you want proper swim time, pick an operator with good reviews and ask how many people per boat before booking. The other thing: the Trang sea is national-park water, and during monsoon (roughly May–Oct) many islands close and boats may stop running. Don't over-pack your plan in that season, and keep a backup option on the mainland.

Should you sleep in Krabi, Trang, or on an island?

First night

Ao Nang (Krabi)

Your first-night base, close to the beach, restaurants, and pier — everything walkable. Good for warming up before crossing provinces.

Near the pier

Trang town / Pak Meng

Staying in Trang town is convenient for morning roast pork and souvenirs, while Pak Meng is near the pier so you can start tours early.

Quiet beach

Koh Kradan / Koh Ngai

Overnight on an island if you want to wake to a quiet, clear-water beach — but there's little food, prices run higher, and power and signal may be limited. Best for a laid-back trip.

FAQ

How do you get from Krabi to Trang, and how long does it take?

It's easier than you'd think. Vans and minibuses run direct every hour during the day, from about 240–300 THB per person, taking around 2 hours from Krabi bus station to Trang bus station. You can also charter a car or self-drive. If you're doing the Emerald Cave tour the next day, take an early departure or stay overnight in Trang or Pak Meng the night before.

Can I do the Emerald Cave if I can't swim?

Yes. You wear a life jacket and have a rope to hold, and the guide leads the group, floating and swimming through about 80 meters of dark cave before you come out at the hidden beach. But there's a stretch that's pitch black — if you're afraid of tight or dark spaces, prepare for it and tell the guide. The key thing is to always stay with the group and follow instructions closely.

How much is the Trang Emerald Cave tour, and what's included?

A join-in speedboat tour runs about 890–1,200 THB per person, including lunch, snorkeling gear, and hotel pickup/drop-off in Trang town or Pak Meng. It does not include the Hat Chao Mai National Park fee (about 60 THB for Thais, around 200 THB for foreigners), paid on site. Book 1–2 days ahead in high season.

How is the Trang sea different from the Krabi sea?

Krabi stands out for its limestone cliffs, Railay, and the famous sandbar swim, while Trang stands out for the white sand and clear water of Koh Kradan and Koh Ngai, plus the Emerald Cave as its Unseen highlight. The Trang sea is quieter and clearer in many spots, so it suits people who want to escape the bustle of Ao Nang.

What time of year is best for a Krabi–Trang trip like this?

High season, November to April, brings calm seas and clear skies, with all the islands and the Emerald Cave open. During monsoon (roughly May–Oct), Hat Chao Mai National Park and many islands close, and boats may stop running. If you come in that season, check with your tour operator first and keep a mainland backup plan.
