Maha Sarakham–Roi Et
Isan Stupas and Twin Towns in 2 Days, 1 Night

Maha Sarakham and Roi Et sit right next to each other like sister towns. The two city centres are only about 35–40 km apart, and Highway 23 (Chaeng Sanit Road) runs between them in a near-straight line — under an hour by car — so they pair up neatly into one weekend trip. Day one stays on the Maha Sarakham side: pay respects at the Dvaravati-style Phra That Na Dun, walk the old Khmer ku at Na Dun, then drive across to sleep in Roi Et city. Day two picks off the best of Roi Et — climb Roi Et Tower for the city view, stroll the lakeside Bueng Phlan Chai in the centre of town, then choose between Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol or Ku Ka Sing depending on your mood. The timing is all planned out here, so you don't have to map it yourself.

Maha Sarakham–Roi Et Isan Stupas and Twin Towns in 2 Days, 1 Night

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

This route works best if you have a car, because the sights on both sides are scattered across several outlying districts. On the Maha Sarakham side, Phra That Na Dun and Ku Santarat are both in Na Dun district. On the Roi Et side the highlights pull in different directions: Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol is up north in Nong Phok district, while Ku Ka Sing sits south in Kaset Wisai district — and Roi Et Tower and Bueng Phlan Chai are right in the city centre, walkable one after the other. The Maha Sarakham–Roi Et distance is around 35–40 km along Highway 23, roughly a 40-minute to one-hour drive. That's why we have you overnight in Roi Et city for one night, so you can wake up to a full second day exploring the town and the outlying sights.

Trip overview and getting around

  • Length — 2 days, 1 night, which is just right: an easy pace with no rushing.
  • Transport — your own car is by far the easiest, since the sights are in different districts. Without a car there are buses and minivans on the Khon Kaen–Maha Sarakham–Roi Et line running between the two towns, but in town and in the outlying districts you'll need to grab a motorbike taxi or call a ride.
  • Main route — Maha Sarakham to Roi Et runs along Highway 23 (Chaeng Sanit Road), a straight, well-surfaced road.
  • Maha Sarakham → Roi Et — about 35–40 km, roughly a 40-minute to 1-hour drive.
  • Admission — most stupas and temples are free to enter. The upper viewing deck of Roi Et Tower costs around 50 THB. Ku Santarat is an open-air historical site and free to visit.
Day 1

Maha Sarakham — a thousand-year-old stupa and Khmer ku at Na Dun

08:30
Leave Maha Sarakham town and head for Na Dun districtNa Dun is about 60–65 km from town, roughly an hour's drive. Grab breakfast or a coffee for the road first if you like.
10:00
Phra That Na Dun, Na Dun district — a bell-shaped stupa adapted from a Dvaravati design, at the heart of the Isan BuddhamonthonRelics of the Buddha and a large trove of Dvaravati artefacts were once excavated here. The grounds around the stupa are shaded, with a religious museum, an arboretum and a herb garden to wander. Free to enter.
11:30
Ku Santarat, Na Dun district — a laterite Khmer sanctuary from the reign of Jayavarman VIIBuilt as an arokayasala (an ancient community hospital) along the line of the Khmer civilisation route. The ku itself is small but well preserved, free to enter, and quick to walk and photograph.
12:30
Lunch break — an Isan restaurant around Na Dun or on the way back to townTry som tam, larb, grilled chicken and sticky rice at a local spot. Plates run from tens of baht to just over a hundred — a filling meal that's easy on the wallet.
14:30
Drive across to Roi Et, passing through Maha Sarakham town onto Highway 23From Na Dun you head back up to Maha Sarakham town, then take Chaeng Sanit Road into Roi Et — about an hour and a half to two hours in total. This stretch of road is an easy drive.
16:30
Check in at your hotel in Roi Et cityMost Roi Et hotels are around Bueng Phlan Chai and the central town area. Drop your bags and rest up before heading out for dinner.
18:30
Dinner downtown / by Bueng Phlan ChaiIn the evening Bueng Phlan Chai has a musical fountain and a relaxed crowd out for a stroll. Around the lake you'll find Isan restaurants and chill spots — try som tam pla ra, larb, grilled chicken and tom saep for a proper Isan dinner.

Day one tip

Phra That Na Dun and Ku Santarat are in Na Dun district, south of Maha Sarakham town, while Roi Et lies to the east. If you start early and do Na Dun first, you can loop back up to Maha Sarakham town and take Chaeng Sanit Road into Roi Et without backtracking. If you'd rather take it even easier, you can skip Ku Santarat on day one and save it for a stop on the way home.

Day 2

Roi Et — a city tower, a central lake and outlying highlights

08:30
Bueng Phlan Chai (Somdet Phra Sri Nakarin Park) — a stroll along the lake in the heart of townA large lake in the centre of Roi Et, with an island in the middle, walking paths, pedal boats and a flower garden. Mornings are cool and pleasant — a relaxed walk and plenty to photograph. Free to enter.
09:30
Roi Et Tower — a city observation tower over 101 metres tallIt stands in Somdet Phra Sri Nakarin Park next to Bueng Phlan Chai. The lower level is free; the upper viewing deck costs around 50 THB. From the top you see Roi Et and Bueng Phlan Chai in every direction, and there's a glass-floor skywalk plus a zipline activity for those who like a thrill.
11:00
Wat Burapha Phiram — see the tall standing Buddha, Phra Phuttha Rattana Mongkhon Maha MuniThe towering standing Buddha is a landmark of Roi Et, not far from Bueng Phlan Chai, so it's an easy stop right after the tower. Free to enter.
12:00
Lunch in Roi Et cityPick an Isan restaurant in town or a homemade-dessert café to refuel before deciding which outlying highlight to head for next.
13:30
Option A — Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol, Wat Pha Nam Thip, Nong Phok districtA huge white-and-gold chedi set atop Pha Nam Yoi mountain, blending Central Thai and Isan styles. Open roughly 06:00–17:00, free to enter, but it's about 60–80 km north of town — over an hour's drive, with a winding mountain road up. Good if you have time and aren't in a hurry to head home.
13:30
Option B — Ku Ka Sing, Kaset Wisai districtA sandstone Khmer sanctuary in the Baphuon style, set within Wat Burapha Ku Ka Sing on the edge of the Thung Kula Ronghai plains. The ku is large and well preserved, about 60 km south of town — great for history buffs who want to build on Ku Santarat from the day before.
13:30
Option C — keep it mellow in town: cafés and souvenirsIf you'd rather not drive far, stay in town, hit a café and pick up Isan souvenirs like Thung Kula Ronghai jasmine rice, silk, mu yo and Isan sausage before an easy drive home.
17:00
Grab souvenirs and head homeRoi Et's standout souvenir is Thung Kula Ronghai jasmine rice, which holds GI registration — pick some up along with silk and Isan snacks before you leave town.

Day two tip

Roi Et's outlying highlights pull in opposite directions: Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol is up north in Nong Phok, Ku Ka Sing is down south in Kaset Wisai. You can really only do one side in a single day if you want an easy drive home. To cover both without wearing yourself out, allow for a 3-day, 2-night trip instead.

What to know before climbing Roi Et Tower

Roi Et Tower is a newer landmark in the centre of town that plenty of people come for, just to head up and take in the city from above. The name "Wot" comes from a traditional Isan musical instrument. The tower stands in Somdet Phra Sri Nakarin Park next to Bueng Phlan Chai, so you can walk straight over from the lake. A few things are worth knowing before you go, to make the timing easier.

  • Lower level free, upper level paid — the upper viewing deck costs around 50 THB, while the lower level is free to walk around.
  • There's a glass-floor skywalk — if you're afraid of heights, take it slowly and hold the rail; the view takes in Bueng Phlan Chai and the city all around.
  • The zipline runs in sessions — for the thrill-seekers, it opens in morning and afternoon rounds, so check the times when you arrive.
  • Late afternoon has the best view — softer sun and the city as the lights start coming on. But if you follow this plan and go in the morning, you'll still have the whole day for the other stops.

Where to stay on this trip

Recommended

Stay in Roi Et city

The main pick for this plan. Most Roi Et hotels are around Bueng Phlan Chai and the central town, so you can wake up, walk the lake, climb Roi Et Tower, then peel off to the outlying highlights all in one day.

Alternative

Stay in Maha Sarakham city

A good fit if you want to start from Maha Sarakham at an easy pace. There are hotels around the university and in town, though slightly fewer options than Roi Et — better as the night before you set off than as a mid-trip overnight.

For this plan we'd suggest staying mainly on the Roi Et side, since day two is mostly Roi Et city and its outlying highlights — that way you avoid backtracking. Both towns have places to stay, from small guesthouses to mid-sized hotels. You can see ranked Maha Sarakham accommodation options on our roundup page.

Tweaking the plan to your style

1

History and archaeology buffs

Focus on Khmer ku and stupas

Give day one to Phra That Na Dun and Ku Santarat at Na Dun, then cross over to Ku Ka Sing in Kaset Wisai on day two. You can string the Khmer and Dvaravati story together across the whole trip, since both ku were built in nearby eras.

2

Temple and merit-making focus

Focus on temples and stupas

Centre day one on Phra That Na Dun, then make Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol in Nong Phok the day-two highlight. Drop by Wat Burapha Phiram to pay respects at the standing Buddha in town too — the full merit-making circuit in one trip.

3

Chill, cafés and food

Focus on food and relaxing

Trim the sights down — Phra That Na Dun and Bueng Phlan Chai are enough. On day two, head up Roi Et Tower for the view, sit at a café, and take home some Thung Kula Ronghai jasmine rice. More about eating, drinking and photos than racing around.

FAQ

How far apart are Maha Sarakham and Roi Et — is it a long drive?

The two city centres are only about 35–40 km apart along Highway 23 (Chaeng Sanit Road), a straight, well-surfaced road — roughly a 40-minute to 1-hour drive. They're very close, so it's easy to pair them into a 2-day, 1-night trip.

Do I need my own car for this trip?

A car is much more convenient, because sights like Phra That Na Dun, Ku Santarat, Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol and Ku Ka Sing are in outlying districts away from the town centres. Without a car there are buses and minivans on the Khon Kaen–Maha Sarakham–Roi Et line running between the towns, but within each town and the outlying districts you'll need to grab a motorbike taxi or call a ride yourself.

Which province should I stay overnight in?

We'd suggest staying in Roi Et city, since day two is mostly spent in Roi Et town and its outlying highlights. Most hotels are around Bueng Phlan Chai and the central town, so you avoid driving back to Maha Sarakham.

Is there a charge to go up Roi Et Tower for the view?

The lower level is free to walk around, while the upper viewing deck costs around 50 THB. The top has a glass-floor skywalk and a zipline activity that opens in morning and afternoon rounds, with views of Roi Et and Bueng Phlan Chai in every direction.

Can I visit both Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol and Ku Ka Sing in one day?

Doing both in one day is fairly tiring, since they're in opposite directions. Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol is in Nong Phok district, about 60–80 km north of town, while Ku Ka Sing is in Kaset Wisai district about 60 km south. We'd suggest picking one side per day; if you want to cover both, stretch the trip to 3 days, 2 nights.

When is the best time for this trip?

You can visit year-round, but the late-rainy to early-cool season, roughly October to February, is the most comfortable — pleasant for walking the open-air stupas and going up Roi Et Tower without the heat. In the rainy season, pack an umbrella and take care on the winding road up Pha Nam Yoi to Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol.
