The name says "38 Years," but this shop has actually stood beside Bang Pho market since 1962 — starting as the grandfather's pushcart parked in front of the market, then handed down through three generations to today. What sets "Pae Brass Pot Porridge" apart from an ordinary congee shop is the huge brass pot still used to simmer the congee fresh every single day, not a decoration out front. The Teochew-style congee here is simmered in pork-bone stock until the rice turns silky and fragrant, and that kind of consistency is exactly what earned it a Bib Gourmand five years running. For an old, air-con-less shophouse in front of a wet market, that's proof that great cheap food still has a place in the red guide.
The dish MICHELIN's inspectors singled out for praise is the mixed pork rice porridge with egg, at 60 baht a bowl — loaded with springy pork, offal, and an egg cracked straight into the hot congee so it cooks to just the right doneness. If pork isn't your thing, there's seafood porridge at 80 baht, fish porridge (khao tom pla), and stir-fried noodles at around 90 baht. Prices across the whole menu run just 30–100 baht a dish, so a full meal comes in well under 100 baht a person. The atmosphere is a small shophouse next to a 7-Eleven in front of Bang Pho market, tables turning over fast, the sound of ladles scraping the brass pots going nonstop. Mornings are the busiest, since this is the regular breakfast spot for the whole neighbourhood, with a second wave of customers again around dinnertime.
What makes this shop especially worth the detour is how easy it is to reach — no excuses. Out of MRT Bang Pho exit 2B, it's about 100 metres, a two-minute walk, making it one of the most accessible Bib Gourmand shops on the Blue Line. The shop runs long hours, six in the morning to nine at night, every day, so it works equally well as a pre-work breakfast or a hot bowl of congee to close out the day. The one thing to remember is that it's cash only — bring small bills — and you'll get congee simmered the same way it has been for more than sixty years, for under 100 baht.
Pae Brass Pot Porridge 38 Years
You can eat well here on just a hundred-baht note — mixed pork rice porridge with egg for 60 baht, seafood porridge for 80 baht, stir-fried noodles for 90 baht, with everything on the menu running 30–100 baht a dish. Note that the shop takes cash only, and there's no booking system of any kind — just walk in and sit down. It's a small, air-con-less shophouse in front of Bang Pho market, next to a 7-Eleven, with tables turning over fast so there's rarely a long wait.
Getting there is the easiest of any Bib Gourmand shop in this group — take the MRT Blue Line to Bang Pho station, exit 2B, and it's about 100 metres, a two-minute walk. The shop is open daily 06:00–21:00, with the peak crowd being neighbourhood regulars at breakfast, plus another wave at dinner. If you'd rather sit comfortably, aim for mid-morning or afternoon instead. Don't feel like leaving the house? Order through Grab or LINE MAN until 21:30, or call the shop directly at 02-586-8852.
